Mariah Carey in the UK (104,559)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
Having taken off with I'll Be There, not until the Memoirs era did Mariah drop from being a pretty steady Top 10 artist. There were certainly some blips along the way, most notably releasing Butterfly as a single but Mariah for many many years was a mainstream radio listed artist. However, I'd agree that she became the source of much derision after she took her clothes off in 1997. Nobody wanted it from her. This emerging vanity aspect of her personality was quite off-putting to British people. The Heartbreaker Remix and Loverboy videos did maximum damage to her profile as did the expanding breasts which started ignoring each other sometime around 1998 into 1999.
It does all strike me as possibly a little bit unfair. Women - and girls, even - were treated very differently back then, such were the times that they would often be asked about their breasts in interviews. There is a video on YouTube of it happening to Britney when she was about 17 years old and it is uncomfortable viewing.
But with Mariah I believe she was very respected as a top-tier vocalist and she was, at the very essence of her being, a solid-bet of a hitmaker - the "Songbird Supreme", no less. That she had achieved this through sheer talent won her many fans who became confused at her need to add sex and sexuality to her career. It smacked of desperation and she was somewhat "slut-shamed".
I cannot help but often wonder what Mariah's career would be like if it was taking off in this day and age. Almost certainly she would not have endured the ridicule for having a mental health crisis but, rather, I would hope she would be, or have been, treated a lot more sympathetically.
Regardless of whataboutery, the success of her singles and her popularity whenever she visited the UK cannot be diminished and it serves to emphasise that if she has the right material and promotion she will be successful. Unfortunately, in terms of both, she has had neither for well over a decade now. The Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour needs to hit the road again.
N.b. Sorry for the essay, J-L, but I do suffer from insomnia. I gotta get me some sleep. Also, check out the chart-placing of "Obsessed", I don't recall it underperforming like that.

The UK loved early Mariah, they just didn't like the whole transition from vocalist to diva. Obviously I'm not speaking for myself as I've continued to follow Mariah. I just think for the UK in general they didn't get the transition. I think she lost a lot of mature adult fans from Butterfly onwards.

Fly Like A Bird performance (104,558)

It's been years if not decades since I watched this FLAB performance from the Grammy's. Watching this from the halfway point of her long career with this many more years of life and experience since was amazing, and moved me so much more than in 2006. Mimi tore up that stage. After the performance this clips shows all the televised awards presented that she was nominated for. She was truly used and robbed that night.

Thank you Jamie. That was such a thoughtful and understandable response. That's how I've seen and understood it tbh. Much of the UK don't understand or relate to her post Butterfly. I personally didn't relate to Mariah until Charmbraclet (I was in grade 11 at the time). I remember Mariah being the hottest artist in my grade 9 year (from a Canadian perspective), which was Heartbreaker era. Before that she was "Mom's music". Then when I went to uni, everyone was obsessed with TEOM album, and then during the E=MC2 era every queer club in the country was blasting Mimi. After those impressionable life moments, me and my friends have been buckled in for the ride.

Anytime You Need a Friend (104,556)
by Bill from the UK

So I was driving back from a friend's this afternoon and Anytime You Need a Friend was played on the radio. Let me repeat that. Anytime You Need a Friend was played on the radio.
I just about crashed my car when those opening notes began and Mariah started cooing softly. There is something about hearing her on the radio. Whatever magic it adds to the music shines through. Her songs sound brighter and more alive somehow.
What a treat to hear this song, in December no less when only one Mariah song is ever played. It was played the whole way through and the DJ said "she is some singer isn't she" which I thought was a great comment.
Mariah on UK radio consists of AIWFCIY in December, and then some pepperings of Hero, Without You, Endless Love and maybe I'll Be There. That's all I've ever heard. Oh and We Belong Together for a bit when that was a thing. I honestly haven't heard AYNAF on the radio since 1994. Wow.

It's funny how Mariah made Christmas cool and now everyone wants in on the moment, but clearly she's the only one who's genuine about her love for the holidays. It would be crazy if for some strange reason, another song in her holiday canon suddenly gains steam and hits number 1. This would mean a tie with The Beatles. . I see it happening for "Oh Santa" down the road.

At least you guys acknowledge her. Here, on the Balkan, I am looked as a freak when I start talking about her and her recent work (like Caution) because they all think that she stopped recording after Daydream album. They all know Ken Lee (yeah, they actually remember that) and AIWFCIY and basically nothing else. Of course, I am not talking about gay guys and hardcore fans who follow her. Which is a small number here. I follow her since day one but for me, I started to appreciate her more after Butterfly album. Diva behaviour - I don't have problems with that at all, I actually like that. I would be the same. Or worse.

Oh crap, I responded to Voldemort. That was a personal failure on my part. Sorry. It might be true that some of us look for something different in Mariah than others. You are a laughable misleader of gargantuan proportion. I don't object to you believing whatever it is you need to believe to maintain a level of comfort in your mind - it is your life and if you are so fragile then do whatever is you need to do to live your best. But rational people will and must object when you and your ilk try to paint the false narrative true in other people's minds in order for your own suspension of disbelief to be maintained.
That you give that performance a 6, also, smacks of disingenuousness. Either that, or you're just lost irredeemably inside delusion and/or galactically stupid and/or have absolutely no knowledge of the details of Mariah Carey's live performance history.

I want to ask an honest question. What does the UK Lambs need or want Mariah to do? I lived in the UK for four years. Mostly on the Welsh border by bishops, as well as London proper (your train system is the best in the world as of my experiences tbh). Why are you UK guys so hard on her? And if I hear "1993-1996, please, I maintain Mariah's most artistic, expression and performances were post 2002 , consistently". What I see Mariah from 1988-1996 is her doing a job. From 1997-present, I see an artist. If her voice broke? Who cares? It's park of her human journey, that makes her so relatable.

Agreed: RATCT is ghastly. Also agreed: "Christmas Time Is In The Air Again" should be given a lot more focus in the lead up to Christmas next year. It's a song that Mariah can probably reproduce live still but, moreover, it's actually a beautiful, exquisite song and arguably should be more successful than it is. There's nothing around quite like it.

AIWFCIY is more festive and celebration with a timeless message. These two songs will play together forever.
Oh Santa has a great beat and a fun song, but it has a stalker-y message. Maybe that's why its still not grabbing the public.
When Christmas Comes sounds like a real classic-in-the-making to me.
Christmas Time Is In The Air is a great stroll around Christmas song, when you're driving or walk-around-the-park or in a bus.
I'm re-discovering The Star. What a beautiful song. It deserves more love.
Miss You Most At Christmas can be the next Last Christmas with a good video. It has a similar dreary sad message.

I'd give it a 6; she looked happy, healthy and nervous. But most of all she looked like she was having a blast. Why is anyone expecting her to be a lightning bolt or prancing around the stage? That's not her gig, never has been. The most dancing she's done was in the Glitter club scene. So demanding that Mariah needs to boot it around stage, just like "fetch", it's never gonna happen, so enjoy how amazing she is in all her other talents. Of which Mariah has many.

I liked the performance up until the solo whistle. Mistakes happen and it was live, but not good.
I'm thinking that maybe the stiffness might be due to medication of some sort - maybe bipolar meds? Cognitively she's fine, but the stiffness is the odd part. She's obviously not a dancer but she knows how to cover a stage, so it's not a lack of experience. At the Hollywood Bowl night I went to while still stiff, she moved around a lot better - and by herself mostly - so I'm puzzled. It could also be a back thing. Oddly enough, the energy in the room was fire.

The stiffness is possibly, the heels too. Its higher than ever this year. Last year, she was walking and moving about more comfortably on stage, but this year the outfit is tighter, and the heels higher. Hopefully it's not medical. Mariah has never really been as active like say Cher or even Madonna.

Bless Brenda, but I think RATCT is just terrible. For a Christmas song it doesn't feel like it goes anywhere, and the melody is flat, its neither here not there.
Of the songs in that era, Darlene Love's Christmas Baby Please Come Home is a much better song. There's a reason why Mariah's version is her second more popular Christmas song, because the song itself is great, and then she updated it. But I don't think she's going to promote it more than that. Maybe they can remix the two songs.

I think Brenda's song appearing in the film Home Alone augmented its appeal to American audiences. Personally, I think Mariah's song is way better. Hopefully RATCT won't stay at #1 too long. There are other more deserving holiday songs.
I would love to see Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run", Charles Brown's "Please Come Home for Christmas", or Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" hit number one. Though I think Mariah's cover of Darlene's song greatly improves on it.

Thank you for this. I unplugged my router, gave it a little kick, plugged it in and turned it on again and watched a collection of Mariah performances from the last ten years. She was like a lightning bolt zipping up and down the stage, belting pleasant sounding, in-tune glorious notes that rivalled the studio takes. All this time it was my WiFi connection, what a fool I've been.

I agree, I don't know what performance some people were watching. You might want I to check with your wifi supplier and your speed connection. All the vids I've seen on social from people that were there is so cute, dynamic and fun. She was engaged with everyone from Ariana and JHud, to the musicians. We can finally put to rest the rumour that Ariana and Mariah haven't been in the same room.
