May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,882)
by Alexis Carrington-Colby from United States
| |
|

Why do lambs do this? You said, "Mariah's not interested in selling out stadiums anymore." How do you know that? Are you on her team? Who books a venue to perform and doesn't want it to sell out? You all say these counter-intuitive things to make Mariah seem so above it all. To paraphrase Whitney, "It's called show business." Mariah isn't getting on stage because she loves performing (her last few years on stage show us that). She needs the money. She has bills to pay like we all do.

May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,848)

I totally agree with Shezz when he says that Mariah is fine doing what she's doing. She's not interested in selling out stadiums anymore. She's happy with doing shows here and there throughout the year and then popping up at Christmas time to collect her coins. I don't get the hunger to master her craft like Celine has right now. Celine could have just lipped her way through entire shows like MC is doing right now but she is hungry to be the best and not ok with deceiving her audience. Celine also has always admitted that the older she gets, her voice has changed and she can't sing like she did when she was younger. MC would never admit the significant changes in her voice. It all comes down to confidence. Celine is confident and MC is not. Celine has done the work to become a dynamic performer and MC has regressed in her craft in my opinion. I'll always champion for MC but she has to get off autopilot and clock in.

Lol. Randy it is an easy way for her to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. MC is going to do something to celebrate 30 years of AIWFIY and Merry Christmas this year. By the way, has anyone noticed that her net worth has decreased from 500 million to 350 million according to various websites? Not releasing an album in 6 years, has really affected her net worth. I hope MC16 is one of the biggest sellers of 2025. It is going to be very interesting next year for album sales if Taylor Swift does not take a break from releasing new music after her Eras Tour.

You said everything that needed to be said. I wish someone on Mariah's payroll would sit her down and tell her this. What it says to me is that commercial, general public, chart success is important to her (like it is to any performer). It's also important to the lambs - look how crazy and braggadocios they get in December. So the whole "she's done everything", "Mariah doesn't care about charts/has nothing to prove" argument is a pure lie. If she would put the same energy into new, smart, collaborations and her dead stage performances, she would be on the right track.

I realize MC has been silent. Then I realized this is Merry Christmas 30. Please no. I can't take any more promotion of that song. I can't take any more versions of that song. I can't take any more anecdotes about that song. Even the public makes jokes that it's overexposed. Longtime fans know when it's quiet she's working on something. I already feel she's narrowing her legacy to being a whistling Christmas act. Didn't we just get an anniversary edition with the nutcracker whistles? Oh no. The thought of an extra, extra festive AIWFCIY makes me wanna stop taking my lithium and date Charlie Sheen.

I think she's quiet because she's finishing MC16. She already celebrated the 25th anniversary of Christmas so I don't think 30 will have a big celebration lined up but I'm sure she will do something. Whether we like it or not, that is where she earns her money now. And the fact that it still goes to number 1 every year shows a large majority of the general public has come to embrace it as an annual tradition. You bring out the tree, put up the lights and you play AIWFCIY. She will do her Christmas concerts for sure. I do believe she is going to focus on non Christmas projects in the near future as well though.

E=MC2 off on the beaten path (106,878)
by whisperingmisunderstandings from USA

I agree and I think the problem with the label's single choices after TEOM is that they always felt they had to stick to a formula (i.e. having the 2nd single be a ballad, which had usually worked for Mariah in the past) rather than shifting to where the popular culture was at. Following TMB with Bye Bye, a ballad at a time when slower songs (particularly non-love songs) were few and far between on the top 40, made absolutely no sense when you had Migrate, a killer song with a A-list feature and a song that already had the public stamp of approval (debuting on BB Hot 100 when it wasn't even a single). Maybe the label was stuck in the past, not fully understanding that in the iTunes era consumers were now setting the trends that labels needed to chase, not the other way around. Personally I think "For the Record" would have done well on the charts (in the vein of MJB's "Be Without You"), and even "Cruise Control" could have been a modest chart hit with its Caribbean sound, considering Rihanna had debuted just a few years earlier. And that's not even touching Bye Bye's subject matter - a topic that no pop song during the frivolous 2000s era would have ever dared to touch. In terms of sales idk if E=MC2 could have done any better than 1,000,000 in the States (considering that point in Mariah's career and the fact that its not her strongest album) but certainly had the label been willing to look forward with Mariah's career, rather than sticking to their tired guns, I think it would have had longer legs.

I think it was the choice to release Bye Bye as the 2nd single. After that I think she just lost momentum and they didn't play. She should have followed up with an upbeat song to keep the momentum going. Bye Bye is to similar slow beat to WBT and DFAU. I love I'm That Chick, that would have been a good follow up with a fun video. I would have loved Migrate as a single but not sure if the video would have been too hoodriah for the general public to take.

E=MC2 / Bye Bye (106,874)
by Alexis Carrington-Colby from United States
| |
|
|
Bye Bye was mid, at best, WBT clone. That it got to #19 on the charts was a testament to the great momentum of TMB and the heavy album promo than the songs own merits. I remember reading a review from a listening party that said BB was a cross between Breakdown and One Sweet Day. Then I heard it months later and was severely disappointed. It would be interesting for her to bring it back in a live show but in a completely re-tooled, slowed way.

I wish you all would stop sniveling about E=MC2. Just kidding. But it does hurt me because I absolutely adore Bye Bye and you all treat it like it's in the same arena as Gangum [sic] Style. Mariah too. She recently said "they should've released Migrate, hello" but yet she performed Bye Bye on American Idol, Oprah and GMA. She was wit it. The lyric is relatable and her adlibs in the last section after the whistle makes everyone think they sing. I had my niece and nephew scream it to the top of their lungs and I would roll all the windows down and they would wave and sing to the cars Bye Bye. Bye bye bye bye bye bye. So from this day forth you all will let this regret about Bye Bye go. I have Right to Dream.

E=MC2 off on the beaten path (106,873)
by BFF from United States

I think Mariah lost interest in E=MC2 as a project after announcing her marriage to Nick. She didn't put as much effort into promotion after "Touch My Body" and chose to prioritize her personal life, which I do not blame her for. She wanted children and thought things would work out with Nick. The miscarriage did not help, but it was not the only catalyst.
The single choices were decent. "Bye Bye" was chosen because she needed at least one "ballad" to go to radio, but I might have replaced "Bye Bye" with "Love Story" and put out "I'm That Chick" instead of "I Stay In Love". By the time "I Stay In Love" came out, the album promotion was pretty over.
The album itself was obviously aimed at radio, so it's a shame that the potential hits were wasted.

Those four would have been amazing single choices. That Chick really deserved to shine. Was the miscarriage after IBYLT was released? That’s when she basically stopped all promo after the VMA Japan performance which was one of her best during that era. I hope MC16 is as fun and varied as E=MC2. It had it all - pop, reggae, disco, RnB and ballads.

I'll be Loving U Long Time is such an amazing song. They didn't need to add T.I on the single release and video. Bye Bye was a poor 2nd single choice. It should have been all upbeat summer singles; TMB, IBLULT, Migrate and I'm That Chick should have been the singles. All fun, summer, breezy, pure-fun-Riah. All four videos could also have been a 4 part story, much like ILT and WBT followed a story, all four videos telling a story would have been epic.

"Miraculously she will soon be able to sing again and then a new album and book will be released about her struggles and then she's laughing all the way to the bank." To be so callus about a life threatning condition with no cure that triggers when she is doing something that brings her joy, is honesty horrible. I would hope that is there is nobody in the world who, after watching her actually have a seizure and what it looks like, would ever have the momentary flash of genuine thought that she would be "laughing all the way to the bank". What a careless, heartless comment to make and you should be ashamed.

Since it's kinda quiet, on the Gucci Mane version of Obsessed, probably the original version too, there is an adlib I cannot understand and it's bothered me for years. She says "He's all up in my George Foreman." Then there's some more singing and then she repeats "He's all up in my George Foreman." And she starts "But I-' I can't for the life of me figure out what she's saying. It's before she says "You like me. You like me. You really really like me" as the song fades. The lyric sites are saying, she is saying, "But I can't do nothing for him." That is not what she's saying. Anybody have any ideas?

Specific lyric on Obsessed (106,860)
by Randy from USA

Since it's kinda quiet, on the Gucci Mane version of Obsessed, probably the original version too, there is an adlib I cannot understand and it's bothered me for years. She says "He's all up in my George Foreman." Then there's some more singing and then she repeats "He's all up in my George Foreman." And she starts "But I-' I can't for the life of me figure out what she's saying. It's before she says "You like me. You like me. You really really like me" as the song fades. The lyric sites are saying, she is saying, "But I can't do nothing for him." That is not what she's saying. Anybody have any ideas?

May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,859)

I agree on some points for sure. It is a business after all. Maybe she wanted to share her story with the world, maybe her label/company pressured her to. No doubt it will benefit her career somewhat, whatever the underlying motive was. The fact that she wanted cameras to capture her suffering. Hmm. Mariah would never do that for sure. All the best to Celine though, I hope she recovers fully and tours again soon.

May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,856)

I'm sorry I'm not ashamed to have said that, I love Celine and I never said it wasn't awful what she's been through. It's a terrible disease and I can't imagine how it's been for her. However let's be realistic, this is the entertainment industry and where's there's money to be made the industry and its stars will make money out of such things. That's not me taking away from her illness as you think I am. I'm just stating a fact. Could Celine have chosen just to get better and not even mention about her voice then just release a new album, absolutely. Or does she document her whole experience and make money off it, then release an album and make double the money, course she will. She's a business woman at the end of the day. It's heartbreaking what she has been through and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. So don't tell me I'm being callous when you don't even know me.

Good spot. I was in a cafe Sunday and Hero came on. Seems to be hearing her a lot at the moment out and about.

I went to the Rhine river today. There was a boat with a young family on it, and the boat was named Mariah. Isn't it cool? I would love to be on a boat like that. Happy holidays / vacation everyone.
