Qatar wedding performance (103,684)
by Luke from Slovakia

Her mic was off most of the show unfortunately (even on the parts she used to sing live). Obviously her voice has not gotten any better since last Christmas. I'm kinda afraid about upcoming concerts. She looks stunning though.

Has anyone else been seeing Mariah's recent performances from a wedding in Qatar? I think they're from this past week. The mic is on and she sounds great and I'm loving the energy. Here's a link to one of a few clips I've seen on Tik Tok.

She's checking her list - she's checking it twice? (103,683)
by Will from England

I noticed that her energy was low, almost akin to late 2008 when she was doing the ISIL promo. I think part of the reasoning is because the last time she performend in public, I think we can all agree she was a bit all over in terms of her presentation whilst on stage, and her voice was being carefully scrutinised so now she's playing it more reserved. She's recorded new live vocals for her harder songs (I love the new Fantasy one), and she's taking them out for their first tryout in public. It is odd though how she doesn't seem to remember which version she is going to perform or where the higher belts are for her to sell the performance. Having said all that, she does look great now she isn't tied into a bone corset and the moments she did sing live were better than what her Christmas shows last year were, though there is still a noticeably reduced range. It's odd as well, she was more happy to change up the melody and sing lower notes earlier on in her career (Butterfly SNL comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others), but now she seems determined to still prove she has the higher register available to her, though we know that this is more unstable and less likely to be hit live.

She's checking her list - she's checking it twice? (103,682)
by Brandon from USA

Andrew, I am in total agreement with everything that you said. I think she hasn't progressed as a live performer because she's always in her head trying to remember when the recorded vocals are gonna kick in. She's constantly looking down to the teleprompter as though she is singing karaoke to her own songs because she needs reminders for the backing track. It's so annoying. She needs to lower the keys even more already so that she can actually sing her own songs start to finish. Whitney, Patti, Mary J, Barbra Streisand, Chaka, Gladys, etc would never even on their worst days vocally.
Also, why does she keep giving these low energy performances like she did in Quatar? What is going on?

If Mariah had "literallly" already done what I was suggesting, I wonder what definitions of "alternating" and "interspersing" you are using?
Let's not have an argument about it. I appreciate what you are saying - there was possibly more variety than in previous Christmas shows. However, I really do mean going Christmas song, non-Christmas song, Christmas song, non-Christmas song, and so on.
Moreover, I really do think she should start lowering every song substantially in key - and by several notes. Nobody is expecting to hear her get to stratospheric heights anymore and I think even the press would cut her some slack on it for she is, after all, admired. But I think everyone would appreciate a smoother slide from lipped to non-lipped.
And she might even have more fun and not look so fraught with stage-fright?

WIth You I''m Born Again (103,681)

She should have released a Duets album in 2017, because there was a long gap between TEOM and E=MC2. Like a collections album similar to No.1s but with a couple of new songs.
She's got at least 10 duets/collabs to choose from. For example, they could remix another version of Every Time I Close My Eyes where Mariah and Babyface alternate on the bridge or verses so it's a more balanced "duet". And of course, the fact that "With You I'm Born Again" does not exist anywhere is almost criminal.

I would like for her to add Dreamlover into her lists. It's midtempo, and can include some fun stage visuals. I would like it to get a revival like Fantasy. Amongst all of her pop lead singles, this seems to have been left behind because she doesn't perform it.

It's 2023, Cher will not be giving Mariah competition this year lol. If I can recall, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande were not even close to a threat when they both had Christmas songs out a few years ago. Even if AIWFCIY doesn't go back to number 1, I don't see Mariah getting upset nor should anyone else especially around Christmas time.

Mariah ought to strongly consider shaking up her Christmas tour set-list by interspersing the Christmas songs with non-Christmas songs,
When she played "Yo New York in the house" at the London O2, 20,000 people went crazy only to fall to awkward silence when it cut short only for Mariah to joke "Nooo, that's a whole other show." Why does it have to be? You would be hard pressed to go to any pubs, restaurants, malls, etc., in December where they only played Christmas music. Too much Christmas irritates people.
I found that the Christmas set-list dragged a bit and would have been much better alternating between Christmas and non-Christmas songs. It would also have the effect of opening up her regular catalogue to a Christmas audience which is never a bad thing.

Mariah Carey has spent 90 weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in the last 33 years. That's 1.75 years or 1 year 9 months. So about every 19 weeks since 1990, Mariah has been at No.1 for 1 of them. That's actually incredible.

That's cool. A similar story with a band member: When Mariah did the Charmbracelet tour, I was at the same table with the guitar man. I forgot his name. (Shame on me.) He was very relaxed and nice. But I was too nervous to ask him something. So I was just smiling and talking to my best friend who came with me at that evening. Lol. To be in the same room and have drinks with George Michael's band sounds exciting too.

George Michael / 3-words (103,633)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
What was he like? He was the softest and most unassuming of the big-name celebrities I have met - like most celebrities they appreciate people around them who are casual and not starstruck. But it didn't register with me at the time that he was - and is - one of the best-selling artists of all time. He did not seem fully comfortable being around people. I just felt warmth and compassion for him. I think it appropriate to say we shall never look upon his like again.
To continue the original irony of that quote: Here is George. This was the night. And *that* right there is my rather expensive bottle of voddy. But it was rather funny seeing this in the newspaper a couple of days later. And it's George bloody Michael. So all is forgiven, Sir.
I think there are many contenders for the 3 most beautiful words in the English language: aside from the obvious, "let me help" is certainly powerful. But I would suggest that "one more try" is a great axiom and a brilliant mantra by which to live.
I am currently now listening to One More Try and Heavenly on repeat thru my headphones and I will admit they have me a bit emotional. The songs go very well together and I think Mariah can lay claim to: "never give up". But whether "never give up" or "one more try" - please, don't ever anyone ever give up, for you always have one more try within you. Just one more try.
Stand fast.

Christmas shows (103,664)

When she came to Dallas last time, she was at the Toyota Music Factory I believe. These are much bigger venues ($$$) but I do think she'd have the draw at Christmas for American Airlines Center.
I'm so glad I got to see her show at the Beacon Theater when she was there. So intimate. Granted, lower production budget, but the "camp" just added to the magic of "Christmas in New York".

How many of you have the AIWFCIY 45 vinyl with pop out picture design? I just remember that is one of the many AIWFCIY items for sale in her store in 2018 or 2019. The AIWFCIY CD single, cassette, 12 inch and 45 vinyl will never be produced again. They are some very rare AIWFCIY items. I bought all four of them and can only find the 45 vinyl record at moment after my last move to Texas.

It is true to observe, is it not, that Brenda Lee's Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree is annually a massive song in the US? It is not so in the UK. Is it in Germany? I don't quite "get" the song. It doesn't appeal to me. It reminds me of Home Alone, is all.

100 thumbs up for your post. It's perfectly written. The people can say what they want, but really nobody on this earth would doubt that Mariah is an icon. She's a music legend. She already was at a very young age. I have novels (not about music) where she is mentioned, just normal novels. It's crazy. Mariah is a living pop culture in person. I can't imagine what it's like. What she's achieved is incredible and can't be repeated. "Superwoman" is nothing compared to her. Honestly there's only one Mariah. I saw her four times live and I never experienced something like it again. Her music is one thing, but her aura live was enchanting. She's got the whole package. So now I stop praising. Lol.

Reflections of my expectations have come to wither (103,655)

Mariah is a cultural and music icon, she's known around the world and continues to be known. She might not be as popular as she was in her hey day but neither have any of the other legacy music icons. There comes a time when they are no longer as popular but it doesn't mean they are no longer liked and respected for their work. Even Madonna who I loved in the early days is making a bit of a fool of herself these days but the legacy is still there. God forbid anything was to happy to her or even Mariah at some point people will remember them for the successes they had in their prime and those that have stayed loyal fans will remember everything. You can't undo history, Mariah was an absolutely huge artist for a long time and no one will forget that. And she's still present today not many can say that. I use to worry if she wasn't popular anymore but I've come to the realization that we can't control time and every artist has their mainstream time. I'm now just happy to have appreciated her music and continue to listen to it, both in anticipation and in reflection.
