A question for Eric (103,574) by Andrew from the UK
My brothers fell in love with Mariah Carey the same time I did, albeit not so much. This was 93/94. My father liked singers, not bands, also. My brothers took me to Mariah in London in February 2000 for Rainbow - mostly because I made them. Even then, none of their friends made fun. Seeing Mariah Carey was an event. No shame.

I wonder: what were the three comments you received? What do your friends and family think now? We have had our ups and downs, you and I. But I think it quite something that for 25 years you have kept something like this going. Not least, the latter half of that incorrectly correcting my grammar.

If I could suggest something: some new colours and new layour would work.

Are you talking about that "working the street" song with the great vocals and Price Sisters harmonies?

Essential II Mariah Carey or very best of cd (103,572) by Bobby A from United States
The previously released Essential Mariah Carey cd is quite boring with too many of the same tracks already on her #1's collections, Greatest Hits cd and Playlist: Mariah Carey cd. I think it is time to release Essential Mariah Carey II cd with the 2nd disc containing eight fan favorites and eight rare and remix tracks including Skydiving, Right To Dream, Beautiful# Hermosa, Triumphant (Vintage Throwback Mix), Shake It Off ft. Jay Z (Remix), Bye Bye ft. Jay Z and Lil Wayne, Crybaby, You're Mine ft. Trey Songz, Can't Take That Away (Morales Club Mix Edit) and Always Be My Baby (Mr. Dupri Mix). These tracks are my favorite MC tracks for a roadtrip. We need a more rounded and representative look back now that MC has been business in 30 years. Arista and LaFace have released some fantastic Toni Braxton collections including her Essential collection. I will not be buying another #1's collection from MC. I am over those type of collections. Lol. Don't believe me.

Rumor has it she has a phenomenal track from Daydream called "One Night".

I get a little giddy thinking about what MC may pull out of the vault for my beloved Daydream's 30th anniversary.

A question for Eric (103,569) by Andrew from the UK
The Queer Theory argument has me wondering: you're a straight bloke, you love Mariah Carey. 25 years maintaining a website for her. What made you love her? What made you a lifelong fan? Do you get any negativity for it, being straight?

Genuinely interested.

[Webmaster: You can find my life story here. In real life, I only received three negative comments for being a Mariah fan, but I never ever got a comment that being a Mariah fan equals being gay.]

I would love more tracks from:

Daydream
Glitter
E=MC2

In that order.

I appreciate your love of the debut voice, but I think it was too without emotion and nuance. “Treated me kind-ah, sweet destiny-ah, carried me thru desperayshunn, to the one that was waiting for me-ah.”

I will leave this earth a happy man if I hear I Lose Control and anything else from the debut era that's not been released.

As for IDWC, the live version on the Daydream tour is always how I imagined she wanted to approach the song. The album version is nice, but the 1996 live version is show stopping.

Exactly. You get my point here. The issue is that gay people will love Mariah because for us ageism is not a problem, or her marital status. But for some others it is, specially if Mariah is sexualized in their minds.

I thought about this IDWC this morning. It kind of reminds me of WBT in 1990. I know MC and Narada disagreed during the recording of IDWC because MC kept adding vocals to what he thought was the final version. I would love to hear the two versions side by side one day. I am pretty sure Narada's version is the one on the album. By the way, I hope we hear Lose Control one day too.

Triumphant (103,564) by Andrew from the UK
My friend Aaron at the time who would mock Mariah really really loved the Triumphant remixes. But for those, the entire project was a mess. As was most things Mariah did post-Nick Cannon. Oh, what could have been. Triumphant started really well but then the second rap verse is a bizarre mess: Lamborghinis and blond bombshells? Really fits the message.

Music Box (103,563) by Andrew from the UK
What's the general consensus here? Did record companies "add" extra bonus tracks to UK editions in the 90s to warrant no exchange rate adjustment - or did they simply remove a track for the US to encourage American citizens to purchase two copies?

Imperfect (103,562) by Bobby A from United States
I would love for Imperfect to remixed as a club version and brought to life by Gorgon City or Disclosure. They are known for taking a song and injecting some life into the track. I wonder if The Dream and Tricky Stewart are actually the writers on Imperfect because it does not sound like a The Dream collaboration.

I think MC envisioned the video at the same time she wrote Triumphant. The MC is like the cheerleader who cheering on two contenders in the song and video. It worked for the video, but not for radio airplay and live performances.

Triumphant (103,559) by BFF from United States
I think "Triumphant" had potential, but she should have scaled back the guest artists. I also remember one of the complaints about "#Beautiful" was her lack of presence on her own song. I love "#Beautiful" as a record, but I do remember wondering why Mariah was featured so little on her own song. I suspect that Miguel had already partially written/recorded the song before he and Mariah decided to collaborate.

Triumphant (103,557) by Jamie from UK
I really like Triumphant. I like the message behind it, I understand why it didn't do great as she's only technically featured on the chorus and the performance at rocafella just highlighted that fact as she just showed her face half way through the performance. So that didn't help. Perhaps if she's titled it Rick Ross-Meek Mill-Mariah Carey Triumphant it might have got more attention. As I think more people were too busy discussing her lack of presence on her own single as apposed to the actual song. But who knows. Fantastic remixes too.

Interestingly, the non-MB30 edition of Music Box, that was on streaming services at the US 10-track edition, has now added "Everything Fades Away" as the 11th track. I can only speak for UK streaming, would be interested to see what, if anything, has been done across the pond.

#Beautiful (103,555) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
If only Mariah and her company had a good planning and marketing, #Beautiful could be her 19 No 1 and You Don’t Know What To Do (replacing You’re Mine) is the 20 No 1. Then Mariah can have another No 1 for A No No (replacing With You) and end everything with All I Want For Christmas Is You for her 22 No 1. Then she can respectfully retire with 22 songs that reached the top of Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

Do yourself a favour: allow your obsession with group identities to take a back seat and I believe your sensitivity towards the conflict of your own sexuality and race will, also. Set yourself free. It's really not that hard.

On the way home today I was listening to music from around this era - including #Beautiful, The Art of Letting Go and Triumphant. I am getting a new rekindling for this era. And especially Triumphant. I used to quite dislike it. It's really fresh sounding still. Really awesome to listen to.

Article: Why Mariah Carey matters (103,552) by Andrew from the UK
"Did the article really need to be summarized with an uninformed reference to M.E. Dyson? No."

You are correct: it did not need to be. However, being a somewhat well-read and -informed individual, it struck me as an appropriate comparison to make. Thus: I wanted it to be. Were I uninformed I would, ostensibly, not have known of Dyson to make reference to him. That you do not argue that he is not a verbose twat is telling. I could, with much evidentiary support, prove that he is. But it would be missing the point. As you do - quite often. if I recall you correctly. If I am mistaken and you are new here, forgive me. As I grow older I try only to retain that which is important and founded in honesty, sincerity and humility. (I'll be 21 next week. I wear it well, I know.)

"The winsome article was written clearly enough for literate people in the habit of reading about certain intersections of ethnic and queer identities in the 20th and 21st centuries."

If you "habitually" read such texts it would be interesting to hear you argue against them. Absolutism is vulgar and the adherence to an over-arching and unspeakably arrogant social science such as queer theory is just that.

You may be a gay person of colour - on that, I would bet the farm. And you may, or clearly do, subscribe to a narrative defended verbosely by a group of (alleged) intellectuals and commentators that support your emotional wellbeing.

But, Big-G, the facts are simple:

Mariah's songs are about being bi-racial, for the most part. That persons with other immutable characteristic can identify with them is great. I have often advocated for universality of lyrics in Mariah's songs versus Kitchen-Window lyrics. So Outside and other such songs are no less important to me than to you and of not you can be assured. But let us not redress things in hindsight and rewrite the narrative to suit a preferred outcome.

This reminds me of the GLAAD award I remember writing about here quite some time ago. Mariah was not a vocal anti-homophobia advocate. She was so quiet on the subject that I think it took everybody by surprise that she won an award for it. Is Mariah a "gay icon"? Well, yes... if being one is determined by being popular with gay people. Has she fought vociferously for gay-rights and equality-legislation? Has she hell. Did she write some songs gay people liked that helped them with the feeling of ostracisation? Yup. But to dress it up in pseudo-intellectual speak is insulting.

You can tie a bow around a turd, honey. You can even polish it. But it is what it is. It's a turd. Like that article. And like your pitiful and pointless response. And, also, like your heralding of "M.E. Dyson" (ironic that the initials were pretentiously added by you to really wax that turd lyrical).

You are ill-equipped. Read more.

There's a smash hit hidden somewhere in this song. It has 5 remixes but they landed in the wrong hands who were not inspired it. This David Guetta convo has me thinking. The song has a classic beat and someone like him would do wonders with it.

The question about straight male fans is an interesting one. The question is not essentially about what MC fans are doing with their genitalia, but, in part, how MC's "brand significance" to gay/queer consumers impacts her straight male fans who love her today like Tupac loved her in the 90s. There is an impact whether or not anyone thinks there should be an impact. Thus, the conversation elicits interest.
