Having applied some further thought to this, we'd also live in a world without Crapfinity, Did I Do That, Boy, and Infamous. So I guess it would all balance out.

I think the Mariah we got in those early days would have been different. Warners were interested in her at the same point, but didn't want her to write her own material. It was Tommy allowing her to continue as a songwriter that swayed it. To think we could be living in a world without Vision of Love, Vanishing, Till the End of Time, All I Want for Christmas Is You. Scary.

Labels will often establish their own variation of what's working/hot. Think the big Latin wave, boy bands, pop princesses, girl groups. Divas are not excluded.
And I would agree Mariah shared more similarities with Whitney at the very start, but they quickly veered away from her richer/darker tones in her voice for more airy and bubbly.
Mariah would've had a career without Tommy, but you have to give him credit. He knew (and ran) the business for decades before her and was masterful (yet controlling) and everything was calculated and perfect up until Mariah took the reigns.

Loverboy (103,144)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
| |
|
|
In my opinion, the people at Virgin should have released the original Loverboy Firecracker version. This version is much more radio friendly with Mariah's full vocals during the chorus. Just similar to her others' uptempo leading singles; Dreamlover, Fantasy, and Heartbreaker. So be it, if the other entertainer sampled the same song. Mariah and Virgin should have focused on the marketing and promotion to boost the song to the masses. Mariah made several public tv apearances in June/July 2001 but zero singing. Then how the people are going to like the song? Back then in 2001, tv live performances made a big impact on an artiste unlike now. Instead of participating with a game on TRL in finding her loverboy (June episode) and giving out ice cream to the audience (July episode) she can focus on singing Loverboy live or even singing Never Too Far.

The Loverboy debacle was probably the catalyst in MC's decline in popularity. First, who was the Virgin AR executive who pitched the idea to the promotional team to sell the single for 49 cents at retailers. The number one female artist at the time and you have to sell her lead album single for 49 cents to ensure a hit on the Hot 100 because radio airplay was weak. Second, the remix was disorganized with all of the special guests who overpowered MC's own remix. I remember back then thinking that there is too much going on the remix. Third, it was MC's first album lead single to not make it to #1. Finally, the Candy sample just did not hit hard enough as a sample for a lead single. After a couple of listens, you get bored with the heavy beat.

I often wonder why did it take Tommy to discover MC. She had this beautiful voice in high school and the help of her brother Morgan after high school. Could it be that if Tommy had never been handed her demo tape, that we probably would have never had a Mariah Carey? The world didn't need another Whitney Houston or Aretha Franklin? MC sounded and emulated the both of them at the beginning of her career. It wasn't until her voice started to change in 1997 that we got a very different sounding Mariah and her musical style evolved into what it is today. I think Potrait gave us the full circle Mariah Carey who looked back at her career in a song. Just me thinking that God is not done with MC yet. This woman has bounced back so many times and caught the world's attention again.

Loverboy (103,140)

I think the released version with the "Candy" sample can best be described as an "interesting mess". Critics were right to call it subpar in comparison to Mariah's previous output. The video was fun, but the low quality of the released version definitely contributed to the underperformance of the "Glitter" soundtrack.
The "Firecracker" version is vastly better than the released version. I personally think Mariah could have gotten away with releasing it even with Jennifer Lopez using "Firecracker" for "I'm Real". The original version of "I'm Real" ended up underperforming any way, and that song did not become a hit until it was remixed with Ja Rule.
Mariah still needs to put out remix EPs for the Glitter album singles on streaming. Does anyone know if she's planning some type of "Glitter" anniversary release?

Loverboy (103,139)

So, I was thinking about "Loverboy" this morning and watched a video combining the original visuals with the Firecracker version. When "The Rarities" was released in 2020 and I listened to the original (Firecracker) version for the first time I was ecstatic and I was immediately filled with a "coulda woulda shoulda" feeling of what this song could have become, not to mention the lost potential of the "Glitter" soundtrack or even the trajectory of Mariah's career thereafter. It screams smash hit. In a way, the skeleton of the song, namely the track, the key in which it is written, the way the vocals pop in the chorus, brought to my mind the "Heartbreaker (Remix)", which she has often referred to as her favorite version. It is just impeccably catchy and the fact that they ripped her off and sabotaged her so badly just shows that Mariah's musical instincts were so on point that everybody was paying attention. She was at the top of her game creatively. Anyway, as far as the "Candy" version is concerned, I was similarly obsessed with when it came out in 2001. I remember hearing the remix on the radio for the first time on a hot day in June while waiting in my mother's car. While the rap intro was going on I was like, wait, these sighs and "oohs" in the background sound familiar and then I was in shock. Is this the new single? Remember back then, it was usually by accident that you came across a new release. I couldn't wait to hear it again. Although it was chaotic in a way, I mostly associated exuberance, fun and sexiness with the song, which was then enhanced by the saturated colorful visuals. Even the single cover is gorgeous and a total classic in my opinion. I can understand why the song did not have a mass appeal in the form that it was eventually released, although it remains a favorite of mine. Technically speaking, the key in which "Loverboy" was rewritten buried the chorus and made all parts sound a bit cluttered. Actually, Cameo's "Candy" has quite an unconventional beat, which makes it a difficult sample in my opinion, although it's been widely used. Still, whatever the circumstances, I love "Loverboy" in all its forms and still enjoy it to the max.

It must be heartbreaking for MC that she can't sing in the studio anymore to record songs for a new project. It has only been 4 years since Caution was released, but man it feels more like 6 years. I am sure there are a lot regrets now about not taking better care of her voice.

Haha. I tough I was bad. I still live in the memory of 1990 to 1996. I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is an opera singer (professionally) and he said that he was not surprised that he was not surprised by the decrease of her voice during the years. She's not a soprano, but sings in that voice too much, and that female voices seems to get broken during the years if they don't take care of it. Thank God I got to experience the height of that incredible career. No one over, no one on the side.

1. I would organise a massive 2-night concert for December 2024 to celebrate "Merry Christmas 30". I would put it at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London (where Beyonce just performed and Jay-Z is now rumoured to want to buy) and livestream it around the world. 60,000 people for 2 nights is perfectly doable. Not just Christmas songs, but obviously featured. That would make headlines, especially if, as looks possibly, Jay-Z would own be the stadium's owner.
2. I would have a list of support acts longer than my arm so that the entertainment was 6 hours long. And they would be acts from Mariah’s career: Westlife, Busta Rhymes, etc. Finishing with Mariah for 2 hours in a massive professional production culminating in the biggest firework display this side of the Big Bang.
3. I would use these stadium concerts to lead to a Rarities 2 release and promo in January 2025 the imagery from which I would use to promote Mariah headlining the Glastonbury Festival Legends Sunday in June 2025 (that Elton John smashed this year).
4. This would be a precursor to a 2-Year Global Farewell Tour which would begin on October 03 2025 to celebrate Daydream 30 and finish September 10 2027 with the final concert in Madison Square Garden to commemorate Butterfly 30.
5. The tour would cover each continent and take in main arenas but have smaller outdoor concerts in famous worldwide locations: Place de la Concorde, the Colloseum, the Parthenon, Cristo Redemptor, Machu Pichu, the Griffith Observator - possibilities are extraordinary - and what a famous farewell tour it would be.

Please not. I don't want a robot AI Mariah on an album. I still dream about a jazz album. I just listened to Aretha's "Bill Bailey won't you please come home". I would love songs like that for Mariah. Retro soul like "When I feel it" would be great as well. If I want Mariah at her best I can listen to her wonderful catalogue from the 90ies, no AI is needed. Of course that's just my opinion.

I have a feeling that if she does release another studio album in the future, she'll be using some sort of AI assistance. A lot of people have accused her of pitching up parts of her vocal climaxes post-breakdown, and we certainly know she's used auto-tune, both blatantly and subtly (as all pop singers do these days). I don't think it's a stretch to say that, once the technology has advanced enough, we'll probably be hearing Mimi-AI generated vocal climaxes mixed in with whatever authentic studio vocals she can muster. Then during concerts she'll just lip the climaxes as always.

Mariah's version (103,127)

Since we are in confessions mode, let me stand up and confess: My name is Andy. I am a Mariah Carey fan. And... I like the Loverboy video. I know I should not, I really do know that. And I try to be a good boy and say no to watching it, but it's just so colourful and pretty. And hilarious. It's addictive and I just can't stop. I'm a mess. But maybe now that that is out, I can move on with my life, find some sort of normalcy and try to accept a world where the We Belong Together video is a thing that I'm supposed to like. Like girls. But not as fun to throw things at.

Oh yeah defo Loverboy video for sure. But elements of Heartbreaker remix got me thinking too. The Loverboy video does make me laugh from time to time though because she clearly wasn't right at that time lol it's like they just let her go wild for the camera

I believe someone on here mentioned that Mariah still has one or two more albums to fulfill with her current contract. I'm no lawyer, but if her voice isn't there to complete said tasks, what happens then? I wonder if she can release compilation type albums like MC Butterfly Lounge or Remixes 2 or Rarities 2. Also has Mariah done Twitter Spaces in a while?
