Remixes (102,325)
by Randy from USA

I don't know if I told y'all this but I started replacing the album tracks with the rap or remix version of her songs. I put the Bad Boy Remix of Honey with Mase and the Lox as track one of Butterfly. I also switched out The Roof and Breakdown with the longer rap versions that were on the maxi-singles. I replaced Fantasy with the Bad Boy mix. That's the one with both the pop hook and r&b hook and ODB. I replaced Obsessed with the one with Gucci Mane and replaced Up Out My Face with the one with Nicki's rap. I also replaced Angel's Cry for the duet version with Neyo. On my Club/Hip Hop playlist I have My All/Stay Awhile. On my Dance playlist I absolutely live for the 13 minute Through The Rain Mix Hex Hector did, the 12 minute Fantasy David Morales Mix, the My All Classic Club Mix (even though I'm sick of feel ya body, feel ya body, feel ya body), I also have both the I Still Believe mixes (the kings mix and the club mix). Finally the Don't Forget About Us Ralphi Rosario & Craig J Mix is awesome.

Mariah is definitely the queen of great remixes, as in her maxi singles were like mini albums. My speakers suffered a stroke since I blasted the Honey and Heartbreaker maxi singles so much, it had to be put on life support. Many of her remixes were far superior than the original. She was definitely a tour de force.

Great post. Maybe this could be a new TikTok video for wedding rehearsals that could garner support for Jive/RCA to allow MC and IDJ to release the remix/duet this summer.

This song is still so good. I love that it's so dreamy. It's unique and pure Mariah. Justin and his management were so stupid that they didn't want to release the remix with Mariah. That was a missed opportunity.

I just found today my Fye Mix and Burn copy of #Beautiful remix with A$AP Rocky and Miguel. I like that remix better than the Jessy remix. One thing that we can say about MC and her remixes is that she started the multiple remix genre featuring other artists and rappers on a different version of a song. DFAU is another one that fits into that genre. MC doesn't get enough credit for starting certain aspects of remixes and vocal stacking.

BB still counts remixes, but if they are structurally different from the original song then they're considered as two different songs. If Jennifer's I'm Real (Murder Remix) and Mariah's Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix) were released today, they wouldn't be considered as remixes for BB purposes, so their airplay, streams and sales wouldn't be combined with the airplay, streams and sales of the original songs. In other words, if you can't recognize the original song in the remix, then they two different songs. #Beautiful and #Beautiful (Jeezy Remix) had combined airplay, streams and sales. While Jesse's rap was added, the lyrics and music didn't go far from the original. Same with Big Energy, but since the original was more popular, Mariah wasn't credited.

You're right. Remixes are counted and whichever one dominates gets credited. That's why you're seeing artists today release several remixes last minute (ie Nicki Minaj, a super freaky girl) in hopes of reaching the summit.
Here's a great Reddit post I found when I quickly searched following reading your post which talks through the changes BB has made, quite comprehensively.
A lot of changes over the year. I do think Mariah would have a lot more "hits" if promo singles were counted back in the day. Then again, so would others, and labels would've restrategized rollouts to accommodate it.

I'm not a chart expert, but I think BB count remixes all the time. The only difference is who gets credited, which has a different rule. The rule is that the remix has to sell more than the original (or I think there's a specific ratio), for the featured artist to get credited.
For example, Mariah wasn't credited for Latto's BER last year. In spite of her contribution actually helping the song immensely. If it wasn't for her remix version, the song wouldn't get to the top 10, nor become a big hit that it was.

Vocal nodules (102,317)
by Terna from Nigeria

I think she should explore other options like speech therapy first, giving up bubbly and see if it helps, then surgery if it does not. There's qualities an sections of her voice missing now as a result of singing the way she does after developing nodules. 1996 is when Mariah damaged her voice touring with developing nodules (one could already hear that airiness creeping in) and then again in 1998 and finally 1999, her voice was shot - just [pop] in the [Rainbow] CD and listen. I look forward to seeing her blow again on stage but not just that, work with a qualified coach this time to maintain her instrument and be disciplined as a singer of her caliber should. Remind the world again why that name "Mariah Carey" is [music] personified.

That statement has envy written over it. She isn't half the artist or singer Mariah is and she knows this. Chaka's career has been hit and miss, more misses than hits. I mean take away "Tell Me Something Good" with Rufus, "Through The Fire" and "I'm Every Woman" (a song Whitney Houston sang better if I might add) and there goes her career. "Sweet Thing" the song Mary Blige covered also is a better take than hers even if she wrote it. Smh. To say I was disappointed in how she carried herself in that interview is an understatement.

I think there was a certain time were BB counts remixes towards the original, then scrapped it as Mariah is the queen of remixes and it helped her maintain chart longevity. Older Lambs, correct me if I am wrong.
I don't know if it's unfair for her but most of the time they are unfair with her as she is a monster not to be reckoned with back in the peak of her glory days. The only bounce back is that she is still peaking.

What BB did was to be expected and not only affected Mariah. A remix shouldn't be a completely different song. Nobody at BB is sabotaging her. Mariah scored her 19th #1 hit when they changed the rule that allow recurrent holiday songs to chart again. She's now sitting pretty with 12 weeks at the top and counting with a nearly 30-year old song.
"Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix)" is far superior than the album version, but it's a completely different song. Same for Jennifer's "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" which was the song that prompted the rule change. Many were boosting mediocre songs by combining their airplay/sales with that of their respective remixes. That wasn't fair for those artists who didn't have the muscle or budget behind them to do the same.
At this point I think we need to stop with the paranoia and conspiracy theories. How bigger of an artist could Mariah be? Many would dream of having a tenth of her success.

Shake It Off. The song was released way too close to WBT, otherwise it would have gone to no.1. Or maybe she didn't know WBT would linger for that long.
With that said, I don't know how much a remix really helps a song during that time. This remix to push a song in the charts is only recent and feels really scammy.
I think there was that opportunity last year with Latto and BER but it wasn't rolled out properly.
I said last year that if someone can turn a modern version of Dreamlover into a sample, the same way Latto and her team twisted Fantasy (and Mariah herself sampled Tom Tom Club's version), and then have a remix of it ready to go, it would be a huge hit. Sort of a BER but in reverse.
But ideas like these needs talented collaborators, which I hope Mariah would be more open to. Frankly Mariah's best collaborators right now are Roc & Roe. They make her look at the world differently and bring her to the modern times.
I had thought her partners will bring that kind of influence and something something inspiration to her life, but Nick Cannon turned out to be a loser, and her current beau has no creative bone in his body.

With this recent remix by The Weeknd feat Ariana debuting at #1 this, it got me thinking about a past single that never really got a shot but should have been a single (not necessarily talking about Migrate). Which song do you think would be a good idea to release as a remix, and with whom? I think the feature would really have to stand out for the song to at least be top 10. There's obviously a lot of material to choose from, but I can't say I have one that stands out - maybe Obsessed? Melt Away? #Beautiful? What do you guys think?

Haha, cheers. Another one that goes on the board after a few splashes.
I would say, despite the deterioration of her voice, her musicality is generally intact. For example, "You and I" for Stevie or her Patti tribute, raspy AF but she still delivered a unique take while being respectful of the original performance.
I find some performances by Bey or Christina (love them both, especially the former) are overdone to be showy.
When I look at runs for example, I judge based on the following criterion: precision (hits each note), pitch, and placement (meaning, does it actually fit musically and enhance the song).
I do think she always wanted to be a singer but not a performer. Much more of a studio artist, where her creativity shines. Not just the songwriting but the overall production of the track/album.

I was drunk when I wrote that post. Forgive me. St. John the Divine, If It's Over at the Grammys, Emotions at MTV Unplugged, Home for the Holidays and Impromptu for Jimmy Fallon exists. And she sang her ass off. I would like to apologize to my MCA family. I think what's frustrating me is that the diva antics, getting her makeup done on stage and lighting comments, as well as the repeated phrase, most people don't realize I write all of my songs, was shoved down the public's throat and I know those talking points were to distract from her being coined one of the greatest singers of all time when her voice deteriorated hella fast without explanation.

Okay. I'm happy you said it, because I was like whenever I ran across a Mariah performances especially early in her career, she literally sound better than the album. Not to shade anyone, but I actually use to even prefer Mariah's live singing to Whitney's back then, because when I'd run across a Whitney performance she'd be talk singing through her performances, dodging the huge notes (though skillfully), and just overly dragging the songs out, so honestly it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Christina (love her too but) alot of times butcher her songs by oversinging ie doing the absolute most. Beyoncé is a great performer, but nothing seems organic just very rehearsed to perfection, which isn't necessarily bad, it's just the reason why when Mariah was at her best I was more moved by her live singing than the others.

Mariah was a natural born singer. Before she could even write anything, she was already correcting or emulating her mother, sometimes even leaving her speechless. She developed into a great lyricist, but she loved being showy like the rest of them when the opportunity presented itself. She was nervous during that performance you mentioned, but she was also very young and basically thrown into this gargantuan fame that could've swallowed anyone alive easily. Mariah was showy countless times on Arsenio Hall while singing Emotions, Vanishing, Vision of Love. She gave the best rendition of Vision of Love on Good Morning America, impeccable, surreal. About her nuances, well, that's what really put her in a league of her own, she wasn't just a singer that could blow, but a singer that could paint beautiful songs with her voice and artistry, what she sung came from her soul rather than somebody else's. I've always loved Whitney, her powerful vocals were unmatched, but Mariah's voice spoke to my soul and the souls of millions of people. When her instrument was in its prime, it was untouchable. I can't imagine Whitney, Chaka or Patti singing "Music Box", "Underneath The Stars", "Melt Away", "Fourth of July", no because they couldn't, but because their artistry wasn't at that level. When Mariah started losing her voice, she's started pushing her writing abilities to the front, it was evident she knew what was happening to her. It is sad, but in my humble opinion, the quality of her voice has always been directly proportional to the quality of her lyrics. When she was in her prime vocally, her lyrics were more poetic, balanced, beautiful, mature, but as the voice started deteriorating, her pen game also changed for the worse.

If you listen to early producers on her album, Narada Michael Walden for example, MC was a perfectionist. She re recorded I Don't Wanna Cry one hundred times until it was perfect. The audience has never seen a showy performance the likes of Whitney, Patti or Christina. And y'all keep talking about the nuances of her voice but to be honest the public doesn't care. Look how nervous she was singing Vision of Love at the 91 Grammys. Fixing her dress constantly. A flat run on "love". She had an amazing voice but didn't know what to do with it. Live performances make you and the only time I've ever seen MC sing beyond what the record entailed was Tokyo Dome in 96. As a songwriter she was unmatched. A friend of mine recently said, she was probably better off as a songwriter producer and Tommy forced her to be a singing star.

So true. I always liked Brenda K Starr. She was always so nice in interviews, beautiful lady. Isn't she a New Yorker girl too? It was so sweet when she sung "I still believe" with Mariah. At least one person who's not jealous.

I just watched a virtual interview with Brenda K Starr from 2021, it was great to see her be so lovely and complementary about Mariah. It was nice to see how much she does actually care about Mariah although they have fallen out at times. She has nothing but praise for Mariah and wishes her well in all she does. I think it must be hard when you have been that close to someone and they are propelled into super stardom, as the artist doesn't always have control over their life.

Oh no, Mariah only a singer or songwriter. No way. What a terrible thought. Mariah was born to sing with that talent. Her voice made so many people happy around the world and still does.

I always enjoy your posts and agree with them 99% of the time. In this case I'm glad Tommy forced her to sing. Her voice is one of a kind and deserved to be heard.

But to be honest, we are so lucky to have you speak to us on behalf of "the public". Especially, the public that includes Christina. Thank you Lamb.

Have You Ever with Usher would have been a great follow up to TGIFY. Usher was hot that time too.
