I like the song from the first listen. The beginning is wonderful dreamy with a retro feeling, the breaking my heart line is very cool and "adidctive", but at around 2.35 it's bit much going on.
You're right that it's stange that there's no promotion by Mariah. And only featuring?

Oh, I didn't know that but now it totally explains the disjoint which by the way after a few spins isn't as obvious. The song definitely gets better the more you listen to it, which is a good thing.

The "With You" video is stunning visually but would not have a playback value for [a lot of people] outside of Mariah's core fan base. One of my favorite shots is of her laying on the floor with her hair and dress fanned out, she looks like the "dancing girl" emoji. Butterfly era was Mariah's video peak. Every single video was amazing, whether it's the visuals, the plot, the execution and of course Mariah's own beauty (Butterfly era Mariah is my favorite look), everything was just next level amazing. Each videos also represented the song's mood so well. With "Honey" giving the sweet but sexy liberated look, "My All" and "The Roof" showing the sexy but vulnerability the protagonist is feeling, "Butterfly" and "Breakdown" amazingly showcasing the vulnerability and loneliness of the protagonist with stunning visuals. Every single video is amazing from that era. Her next video peak was "TEOM", every single video from that era was so high quality and just pure perfection.

I love the With You video. It's so classy and I love her in those black and white trousers towards the end. This is a great post because I also did the same the other day. Honestly, how good were the Butterfly videos? Every last one of them was a gem. Honey, Butterfly, Breakdown, The Roof, My All. Just excellent and her look then was that of a liberated young elegant R&B queen.

I think the song is ok but definitely not a comeback single. I also think it's a bit strange MC hasn't posted anything about it on her page. She even posted about her "cookies" the other day. It's also no where to be found on her Spotify page. On top of that she's list as the "featured" artist. I think it's very clear MC isn't a fan of the song and doesn't want it to be associated as a Mariah single. She is aware she only has one chance to get it right and this isn't it nor an appropriate representation of her new music. I think JJ/TL approached her about their album and she committed as she's a fan of their work.

Revisiting videos at random (98,152)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

So I was just randomly revisiting some of Mariah's videos, random order and had a few random thoughts. I watched "Infinity" first, haven't seen that video in a long time and looking bad it wasn't a bad video, minus just the scenes of her awkwardly bopping in the closet in the black dress. So overall not a bad video and I loved the sequence were all 3 of her "suitors" make cameos. I then switched to "A No No". Although I'm iffy about the video (the color palette and all is great though) I still can't fathom that this song didn't make a bigger impact. No one can tell me had Ariana or someone like her sang this song it wouldn't be on the top of the charts. I really wish she had Cardi or Nicki on this track and gave it more of a push. "I Don't" is a hot mess haha. Mariah looks hot but that's about it. "With You" a beautiful song, but no replay value. Mariah looks stunning though, but that won't push a song.

Those are good choices and yes in that order. I think Mimi likes to play too much and single and dabble with her babies and hedge her bets instead of picking a strong plan and working it. She likes to test the crowd, but there is rarely lamb consensus and the general public doesn't care, or has the attention span of a gnat. She has to focus on strong, well crafted songs, or she can just keep playing and having fun.

Caution deserved better (98,150)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)

Caution was a step in the right direction musically in my opinion. I understand that Epic released WY because they wanted to MC to appeal to the AC audience again. The single choices should have been 8th grade to represent the ballad side. A No No to represent Top 40/urban radio Caution to represent pop radio and Giving Me Life to represent R&B, and hip hop formats or the distance for R&B/hip hop radio.

Jimmy and Terry confirmed that Mariah had already started working on Somewhat Loved when she brought it to them, and they said that they took the song in a different direction, so the complaints about the song being disjointed are valid it was done intentionally.

I feel any song from The Rarities bests Somewhat Loved. Don't you think? Ms Carey, Mariah badly needs to stop singing her own materials for a change. I mean it in the nicest way. Have a good day (or night). Cheers.

I really like it too, it's Classic Mariah. I wish we'd get an album soon, full of these songs. A good R&B/Pop album is much needed right now before the Holidays sneak up on us again and she devotes all her promotional time to the Merry Christmas/AIWFCIY yearly monster of a hit. We all know she's got it in her, she just needs the right collaborations like this recent release.

This is a great fan review. Even if Somewhat Loved does not become a top ten Hot 100 hit or receive radio airplay, this is the start of a new era. We just may get Butterfly: The Reprise or TEOM II in 2022. Lol. Just my thoughts. Happy Friday Lambs.

Somewhat Loved JJ TL MC + JJ (98,143)
by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa

The more I listen to this song the more I love it. The musicality is so dreamy. I love the minor notes and keys, love the piano against that hard beat. The storyline is unique, very relatable. I played the song for a friend and he said that he didn't listen to one lyric, he was mesmerized by the music. I think that's fitting, seeing as the main stars here are JJ and TL, it's all about the production. Her vocals are produced like an instrument and I really enjoy that. It definitely reminds me of the Caution era in ways as well. Even more than Caution, this song reminds me of Unbreakable by Janet. It first comes in in the intro when she says "me" for the first time. It gives me 2 B Loved/Dream Maker-Euphoria. There's a 1970's musical throwback vibe here as well. I love Unbreakable, it is one of my favorite Janet albums and the production style was flawless, clean, and so mature. Somewhat Loved is the perfect jaunt into this different style for Mimi, I think it's exciting to hear something this different from her. I hear something different with each listen. If Mimi and JJ were ever to do a collab, this is the type of song that it would work on.

The missing piece for me was her diction and as soon as I played it while reading through the lyrics. It changed immediately (almost like an unveiling) and made a whole lotta sense. Solid effort. Kudos to a genius for getting the correct lyrics.

I like the different elements of the song. I wish the words were more discernable. There is something about the way she was singing that makes her diction constrained or something. It is somewhat nice though.

That describes most of Jam and Lewis' output. I love it, and Mariah's voice sounds amazing. Remember this isn't Mariah featuring Jam and Lewis.

Yey! New music from our queen Mariah Carey! It has an infectious vibe in it and sounds radio friendly. I hope it will reach the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 if not #1. Well, you can only hope for these days. It seems radio DJs are counting her out. Not sounding fresh though for it sounds her previous songs but much better than 2010s releases.

Now I've heard the full song, I'm conflicted hah. I love the chorus/hook. The beat is great, it sounds funky and the harmonies are super as usual. The rest of the song seems somewhat disjointed and lacks any real structure or coherency. It's quite jarring that it seems to be a mish mash of snippets all pieces together with the repeated hook acting as the bridge between them. It's not that it's bad or anything, but Mariah's never done that approach and it's taking some getting used to. Not having the intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus approach is different to say the least. But, I've been asking for Mariah to step away from her usual formula and step it up and bit, and she has. It's definitely growing on me with each listen.

Somewhat Loved (98,135)
by Terna from Nigeria

I can already tell it's gonna take me a while to fully get this song as with some of her songs. The harp intro is reminiscent of Sting's "Shape of my heart" song from a while back, but the first listen was underwhelming as the song lacks a definitive melody line, isn't really memorable save for the chorus, nor cohesive (peep the jarring way the first chorus jumps into the mix) almost like two songs merged together jarringly (maybe on purpose). On a positive note it does have that Mariah Carey sound/magic, the production is top notch as expected - it is Jam and Lewis after all they never disappoint and it gets better towards the end. All in all it's pretty decent but isn't gonna do anything on the charts, I don't think that was the intent either. Just a bop with a slick sick beat.
