Re: Voice therapists (97,860) (97,861)

Probably if Mariah really wanted it she could get back to Charmbracelet tour vocals but it would take a complete overhaul. Diet, drinking, nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, vocal therapy, etc. But is it worth it? Especially since the lambs are still with her no matter what her voice sounds like. The question is would the mass public come back if the return of the voice did?

They have exercises that work, has she even tried this as an option? With Covid-19 and the lockdown, we noticed her voice get reasonably better, but far from what we know she's capable of. I always wonder if she even has a vocal coach, I doubt it. There are some really good ones out there and if done right, those exercises really work. Then there's the bubbly.

The right producer could change everything for Mariah. There are many things they could do to utilize her voice as the instrument that it is.

This is not about live performance. Like you said, it's expected that she's gonna lip some of it. But it's not like she features much of her newest material in whatever tour she goes on anyway. She's a creature of habit, and she's no doubt gonna stick to the same damn setlist leaving at most 25% for her latest outputs anyway. I'm talking about the upcoming recorded music from this point forward. Of course she's still gonna belt somehow - she can't help herself. It's her brand. It's obligatory for her to at least embellish her songs with high notes in whatever form. But since your original message is about her pushing herself more vocally, she should still do so within the limits of what her current voice is able to do without sounding too strained as it was on I Don't or the recent WBT re-recording for example. I'm sure Mariah, being the perfectionist that she is, is willing to do as many takes as possible to get the best one, but she can really only work with what she is currently capable of, controlled setting or not, and right now, the extent of her upper register appears to be limited to either whistles or belting in razor-sharp bursts, which have unfortunately sounded less pleasant through the years.
Right now I'm rather more concerned about the songwriting quality and the producers she works with, because at the end of the day, the success of their collaborations depends on their chemistry. If the vocals aren't as reliable as they used to be, the only aspects left that she fully has control over are songwriting and production. Not saying that she's no longer capable of impressing us vocally, I just want to dismantle the popular notion of equating "impressive" to belted, acrobatic high notes and highlight that now more than ever is the best time for us to shift the focus more towards the production aspect of things, which has always taken a backseat to Mariah's vocals when she was at her peak. Mariah is still great enough of a singer to not need to hide behind production, but dammit if awesome production doesn't help a lot, especially these days.

Mariah is going to have to work with some Neo-Soul and traditional R&B producers like Carvin and Ivan and Rex Rideout. Their arrangements are simple smooth R&B arrangements that showcase the artist's voice. For example, checkout Leela James' Complicated produced by Rex Rideout. Leela James does not have the greatest voice, however her songs draw the listener in with her voice. Rated R&B describes her voice as like sandpaper. MC should just sing and draw the listener in with simple arrangements with her current melodic vocal flaws. MC16 is going to be her most interesting album because we don't know what to expect this time around. I have faith that we will be pleasantly surprised.

When people go to see Mariah, they don't expect a concert of boring whispering, the remain fans she has want to connect to what they've known her for. As much as we want her to adapt her hits to her current voice, were she try to do that in concert, people wouldn't go. Fans love the euphoria of the high notes and the belts, even if they're lipped. I don't think she should go all out on every track, but a whole album of whispering, especially when the whispering is not as smooth and beautiful as her Charmbracelet days, would be boring, at least to me. Just a few belts here and there, would be great, at least one last time. An album like E=MC2 would be great, fun songs, and some great belts.

True. As much as we crave powerful belts, I feel like the world has come to accept a vocally subdued Mariah. It doesn't matter as much anymore whether or not she lays out powerful vocals. People don't go to her to get that anymore - they haven't since at least 2008. Cooing and whispering is the norm for her now, with a few attempts at "belting" (more like unnecessarily extended notes and ad libs) here and there. We're way past the point of it being a stylistic choice. As she gets older, it becomes more and more of a preservation measure. If the labored climax of Portrait is anything to go by, the best sample of the most powerful recorded vocal we are likely gonna get from her from here on out is her redo of We Belong Together this year. Thin, tentative, squeaky, and more concerning than impressive to listen to. I'd rather her stick to the range she's most comfortable with - her lower register, which she should capitalize on, because even today, not too many female singers have that to offer, especially in the distinctive tone that she has.

Totally agree. I want Mariah to give us powerful vocals again like Mine Again, Circles, Emotions, belt belt and belt. Enough with the whispering. It's time for a change. I could care less if she can sing the song live or not because she can always resort to lipsync and prerecorded track, as she has always done since 1998.

I'm the opposite. I love Mariah's powerful soulful voice but if it's not there anymore I don't want to hear a Frankenstein album. MIAMTEC came close to that being recorded over four long years. Caution was refreshing because I could get into the song without judging the voice. Unless all this rest has helped, or she went through the throat surgery I don't think she should patch together songs. Or else a new album might be ten years away.

En Vogue and Mariah were the highlight of 1990 for me. They've always put me in the mind of each other with their little black dresses, classy yet cutting edge auras and of course outstanding vocals: my favorite singer and female group of all time. I've always dreamed of them doing something together during their hay day. It;s never too late (Mariah if you're reading this). *cross fingers*

On her next album I just want Mariah to sing again. I'm kind of tired of the whispering. I know she might not be able to replicate some of the songs live, but who gives a. She is known for her powerful voice. As much as like Caution, there wasn't a moment in which Mariah raised her voice to resemble a belt. We all know she's a studio artist, she's said it. I guess we've all complained about overproduction before, but I don't care as long as she gives us at least some powerful songs. I have made my peace with the way her voice is now, so I don't cringe or expect anything expectacular when she's going to perform, but I know she can do magic in the studio, even if she has to patch each song together word by word.

90ies music [is] like "therapy" for me at the moment. I mean just great memories. I love this song since it came out. I miss this type of music. Can anyone imagine Mariah singing a song in the style of "Don"t let Go"? I would love that.

So what happened to MC30. It's weird it abruptly stopped before Memoirs and then we hear nothing. I figured she stopped to stretch it until her anniversary. But that has since passed and still no news.

You just might be right on this one. I went and played it back and I hear it now, and yes its a little bit "noisy" so to speak at that section and may even have a bad edit of her vocals, almost muffled. But I hear it now, and I've played breakdown for years. Lol. Gee thanks. This is one of the cool things with her recordings, you keep hearing it and then one day you listen and then get it, and then your perception changes.

Pretty confident on this one.

What do you think? You gotta know I'm suffering. So I, I, turn out the lights and break down and cry. I... I... I..."
