Re: Hopes for the memoir (94,567) (94,570)
by T from USA

I think if she would've written and released this memoir ten years from now when she really is at the tail end of any kind of pop career we would get much more of the "off brand" story. But she's achieved so much so fast in a short period of time that the next logical step is her memoir at the age of 50. Only problem with that may be that it is not yet as baked as it could be if she would've waited another ten years.

Is a Mean Girls reference. Gretchen Weiners says it. Cmon, ya'll should know by now that the majority of Mariah's later career is peppered with references to her favs.

I'm in agreement with Bill, Edward, and most definitely Andrew on most of these topics. But Mariah will not and should not talk about any vocal deterioration. The public can speculate, lambs can condemn, but there isn't a problem until she confirms there is. She's still singing, touring, recording and will be for the foreseeable future. Why would she publicly confirm her voice is in danger? It will only influence the public negatively thus hurting her appeal as a performer. Yes the lambs know there is a problem with her vocal chords, but for now she's to keep it close to her heart and keep singing. She won't talk about it until the final act, and that is decades into the future.

The cover for the album reminds me of the Daydream photoshoot. Hence my cropped avatar to try to get it aligned. Do y'all see the similarities too?

Yes that theory sounds interesting and makes sense. So now I like the title after thinking about the different meanings. Thanks Edouard.

I really hope she picks up with the MC30 anniversary soon. I felt gutted she postponed rarities and surprises. I was hoping for a new vinyl release on 180g vinyl, a remastered digital version, the release of The First Vision on DVD/digital, and of course, the demo tape.

Well she can mention all the people in-between if she must, but those I mentioned she was either married to, engaged to, or with for a significant period of time.

Bill, you did an excellent job writing this message. I feel you touched on all of the key topics that MC probably discussed in her memoir. Only time will tell. Maybe we have a chapter by chapter discussion during the first two weeks of its release.

Bill I couldn't agree more. Everything you said I want to know. Remember awhile back when she said she wouldn't write a memoir because no one would believe her childhood? I'm already disappointed in the title and cover photo but I don't think I need to repeat the cliche.

I didn't say she created the word, but that she's happy it made it into Webster's and that was a joke. But I was typing too fast and had far too many typos, some of my own creation like fuve vs. five and some the fault of autocorrect, like bastard ass got changed to masters class. I won't even try to unscramble the entanglement joke, but maybe Bill got it.

This is actually a good analysis and one I hadn't thought of. The name "Mariah Carey" means a lot to different people, even herself (indeed she has in the past referenced "Mariah Carey" as a different persona/entity to herself), from different backgrounds from professional to ethnicity to personal. I wonder if she does go down that route.

"Irregardless" is not a word Mariah invented. According to Merriam-Webster's: "The reason we define irregardless is very simple: it meets our criteria for inclusion. This word has been used by a large number of people (millions) for a long time (over two hundred years) with a specific and identifiable meaning (regardless). The fact that it is unnecessary, as there is already a word in English with the same meaning (regardless) is not terribly important."

What other debut rarieties could MC be talking about? I can only recall hearing about the following:
Demos 1. Here We Go Round Again 2. Weakness of the Body 3. Hypnotize 4. Do You Ever Wonder
Live Performances 1. Vision of Love - 1991 Grammy Awards performance 2. Vision Of Love- 1990 Arsenio Hall Show performance 3. We're Not Making Love Anymore 1989 - live performance 4. Vision of Love/All In Mind - 1990 SNL performance 5. Vanishing- live performance on First Vision

You're still trying to make it be fuve? LMAO. What about all her "entangulations"? She's mad because Jada used a version of her self created word before her memoir was released. I bet Mimi is proud that irregardless got it's masters was into Webster's dictionary this year.

Her name twice on the cover (94,555)
by Edouard from France
| |
|
|
The title is not expected. And why should it be? Mariah knows how to intrigue. I actually like the title now that I have thought about it and that I feel I can see where she is going with this. She's not having her whole name written twice on the cover for nothing. I believe this book is going to be perception versus reality of who Mariah is. The meaning of Mariah Carey to a bunch of people and entities: - in terms of money to the industry, corporate world she talked about in her Variety speech. - in terms of talent and contribution to music and other artists maybe - in terms of inspiration to people, to her lambs especially as a multiracial woman who has had to overcome so much and has always been vocal about it without saying to much and yet allowing us to feel her in her songs and find solace in them as well - in terms of love to her kids and family - in terms of faith and self-belief, how she's finally at peace with who she truly is outside of those outside lenses, how she feels whole now and as dissociated as before, not torn between all these versions of herself I love this woman.

Hopes for the memoir (94,554)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I know the memoir is wrapped up, packed up, ribbon wid a bow on it, but here are my hopes for what she talks about.
* Her musicality first and foremost. Discovering her gift, the nurturing of it by her mother, singing with those old jazz musicians as a child and learning her craft. I really hope she goes into detail about her songwriting process and what she puts into each song. I would love the memoir to contain scans of her song books with lyric ideas and song structures etc. Who she enjoys working with, and chapters for Gavin Christopher (pre game), Ben M and Walter A and Jermaine D as they are her most significant writing partners.
* The childhood. The struggles, the divorce, Alison and Morgan then and now, school life, moving to Manhattan to seek her fortune and living with Josephine and waitressing etc. And then the truth about what really happened at "that party" where Tommy heard the demo tape. Was it all a publicity spin, as she was already bring courted by another label etc.
* Tommy, Luis, Nick, James and Brian as her significant partners should be covered in depth, and some light shedding around the whole Derek Jeter sitch, and whether she had an affair etc. would be good to know.
* Motherhood and how this has changed her views, her pace, her determination, her priorities etc.
* Songs that are, will be, or never were. A deep dive into songs that never saw the light of day and why. The Lauryn Hill collab, the Prince duet, Reach for the Sky. Also come clean about songs that are about people (Eminem, Damizza etc.).
* Glitter and the bipolar diagnosis, warts and all.
* The nightmare era and how and why she allowed her to effectively ruin and permanently damage her image, brand, and public persona she spent years building up.
* The voice and its deterioration. Acknowledgement that her own life choices have affected it, and that she has accepted that and has made her choice, and is comfortable with it. End the smoke and mirrors and press forward singing with your real, unfiltered and engineered voice. We will always love it, no matter how it sounds, because we love her.
And that's probably it. If however it's a compilation of her sound bites and press releases since 1990, I'll be pissed.

Re: The Meaning of Ridicule (94,529) (94,553)
by Will from England

Forgive me, but isn't the point of an autobiography supposed to be all about the person writing it, therefore the title should reference this in some way? Looking at other titles for memoirs, she could have gone down two routes: either have a title that is vague but intriguing (e.g. Life's What You Make It - Philip Scholfield or Handstands In The Dark: A True Story of Growing Up and Survival - Jane Godley or Becoming - Michelle Obama) or she has a title that is more on the nose, tells the reader what this book may be/is about (e.g. Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man - Mary Trump or This Is Me - Mrs Hitch or Eye of the Storm: Twenty-Five Years in Action with the SAS - Peter Ratcliff). Mariah has always picked titles that she feels embodies the work that she has put out, more so with her albums. Yes some are self-referential but there is nothing wrong with that, and more so when it comes to a book. I'm sure she had a lot of titles that she went through with the book before settling on one that suited the theme and subject matter within the book.

The Meaning Of Mariah (94,552)

MC has always been the artist with eccentric and in your face album titles. The book title does not surprise. When the book arrives, she is going surprise all with the book and how deep she goes in. I hope she releases the 30th anniversary edition of Mariah Carey on vinyl at the same time or two weeks later. That's all I really want.

Me too, Brad. I wish they had either used a new photo or the picture of Mariah as a baby on the beach.
The Meaning of Mariah Carey isn't a bad title. It's about the essence of who she is and was as a person without artifice. Her laying bare her soul.

Andrew, I do appreciate your opinion because I figure you as an intelligent and educated person (and I would love to meet you in the flesh) but your cynicism is too hard to bear. Give our girl a break and let us read the book before judging.
By the way Andrew, when addressing me, use my name. It is only four letters and not "Belgium". A matter of respect. Thank you.

The title (94,546)
by RibbonB from USA
| |
|
|
It is not great, but it's not that bad. I would've liked a one word title, but hey it's her book. Her co writer does give me a little more confort and confidence in the contents. The issue with the title may lay in the unfortunate coincidence in the forthcoming documentary called The Meaning of Hitler, based on the decades old biography by the same name. But I don't think people will care, her memoir is already a bestselling memoir on Amazon based on pre-sales.
