I wish that Mariah could be more like Celine. She still seem to have her feet on the ground, while Mariah is flying high. "I need alcohol" was the best comment ever. Lol.

Re: When Mariah lipsyncs (94,480) (94,494)

Everything about Mariah lipsyncing is awful. It mostly seems that she is petrified something is going to go wrong and that she will be caught out. And if and when that happens she can claim that she wasn't really pulling a fast one over on everyone because only an idiot or blind person would believe she was really trying in the first place.
I have to hand it to her though. To get on stage every day living in fear of the moment the playback has to kick in, and know you can't wait to hear if it does but that you just have to go along with it, takes a lot of guts and risks a lot of shame.

Fourth of July vs Underneath the Stars? That is too close a call. Underneath the Stars perfectly captures the playful nervousness of youth in stolen moments of time, whereas Fourth of July is a calmer, walmer, more festive celebration of a more mature, but still somewhat youthful, romantic escapade. They are both brilliant.

Have to disagree: the pre-MTV Unplugged voice was not as emotive as the post-MTV Unplugged voice. Music Box and Merry Christmas were velvetty perfection, power and beauty combined. The vocals seem less tense, more relaxed and fluid.

Keep calm and Carey Dion (94,491)

Hilarious gay guy tells Celine he is obsessed with her and pitches a duet with Mariah to be told they apparently both met and discussed it as a possibility already. Celine and Mariah duetting on Mariah's next album would make it epic. Now, Celine has retained a lot more power and range than Mariah so Mariah would need to be on her A-game. Yet, I am interested to hear what this gay guy's concept would be.

Her "lower" tone reminds me of Whitney (in some areas), it's so good, very warm. But I chose Daydream vocals because for me she was 'fearless' and very confident especially on live. How I wish she had the "Daydream" vocals when she had her first Divas Live in 1998. She would have really dominated that stage and that would be epic. I know she's respecting Aretha but for me, I hate to say this, but she seemed not so confident with her 1998 vocals that I feel like it's more of an "excuse" not to accept Aretha's challenge. I know that she can really tear up a performance but her "instrument" was not really cooperating that year (1998).

Agree, a real highlight on Butterfly. I love how the numerous vocal layerings are now all up on YouTube, so you can really hear what's going on in the background. What's great for me is that the song perfectly captures a very similar experience I had on the 4th of July many, many years ago (I'm not as young as I look Robert Anthony lol), so it is quite a dear song to me, and helps me "relive the splendour".

4th of July (94,488)
by Tyler from USA

This song has not only become my favorite song from Butterfly but it's now in my top 3 all time favorite Mariah songs. This song is pure perfection from the poetic lyrics, production, and immaculate layering of the background vocals. Personally, I feel this is the best use in song of Mimi's whisper register and the transition into full voice during the bridge is outstanding. While Underneath the Stars was great, it doesn't have the same effect as 4th of July. While I hate comparing songs, UTS lacks the sensuality and feels like an adolescent version of 4th. Anyways, shout out to a song I love not only this time of the year.

When she lips, her mouth makes some exaggerated moves and tends to open more unlike when she's actually singing.

I love her "lower" tone too. Like you said it sounds more natural. On her first two albums her voice is so rich and magical. Pure Mariah.

Yep. I always thought Alto Mariah was better too which is why I love the first two albums so much as well. It sits more naturally, and her voice on the first album is incredible. If you strip out all the production her voice sounds so rich and full bodied and has this superb tone that went away by 1993. America the Beautiful is the best example of that. It sounds like there are two Mariah's singing.

A major reason why I enjoy her debut and Emotions so much is the lower tone of her register. She sings in a deeper voice on the first two albums and in my opinion, her lower voice is so much richer. I have noticed that recently in her concerts, she has been reverting back to that tone on some songs, which is great.

Yup, the debut is really great vocally. It's not so perfect like Emotions or Music Box and Daydream. But songs like "VOL", "Vanishing", "AAIL", "LTT" and "Sent from up above" are definitily music highlights. That she was so young when the album was released makes it even more stunning. And I do love the 80ies vibe of "Prisoner". See ya.

I can understand why her debut is ranked so high for vocals. Mariah Carey (debut) was #1 on Billboard 200 1991 year end charts. Music Box was #2 on Billboard 200 1994 year end charts. Daydream was #2 on Billboard 200 1996 year end charts.

The eyebrows not moving has more to do with Botox, I guess. On the matter of lipsync: the less she is posing, the more she is really singing.

What is your give away to tell when Mariah lipsyncs? For me it is her eye brows, when her eye brows don't move, she is lip syncing.

I know what Don't Forget About Us is about, truly. Me and only me (and Mariah) knows it. She told me back then when I was in my teens on MSN Messenger, when she featured me in Say Somethin' (So So Def Remix). I'm sorry but I can't reveal it.

Did anybody catch the JoJo concert Saturday night on the Melody VR app? If you didn't, go sign up for an account. The whole concert is on up on the app and it is free. The sound and picture is unbelievable. JoJo is a great vocalist. She added some whistle notes on her song Man near the end. She sings some incredible vocals throughtout the 9 song set. Check it out today and let me know your thoughts about the app and JoJo.

Oh so you actually weren't being sarcastic the first time?
Whatever expertise or knowledge I may appear to have or know is still very limited considering the vast universe of music out there. Writing reviews entails more than just having an encyclopedic knowledge of music to pull easy and detailed references from. And there definitely are many people in this board (yourself included) who can express their thoughts more eloquently than I can ever muster. I can only write about either what I appreciate or what I don't. Make me write anything that falls in between those extremes (which encompasses a lot of what I listen to) and I won't be able to say anything interesting (or anything at all). And to me, a true music reviewer/critic/journalist wouldn't have to struggle that much. But that's quite nice especially coming from you, as you tend to be sparing with your praises. I'm content with being the resident pretentious occasional music critic here. Haha. At least I still have an outlet to geek out on without having to create a blog or resorting to social media.
I'm positive that Martyn was way better at it and he sure is missed.
