You got me thinking again, Edward. Wham's Last Christmas streaming numbers were exceedingly high last Christmas. Last Christmas may come close to being #1 this year too. Wouldn't it be cool if it were 4 weeks of the top two spots back and forth between the two biggest Christmas songs in the world. However, RATCT may keep Last Christmas at #3. We will have to wait and see come November 15th which song will contend with AIWFCIY for the top spot. This is going to be interesting to see what happens.

Streaming was a game changer. It has taken over radio by showing a real reflection of what's really popular. AIWFCIY is what I consider a pure number one, its position on Billboard depends on the people, not a promotional tour on radio or the record label convincing anyone. If a song is popular on streaming, radio has to pick it up. What Billboard did by changing the rules was smart and fair. If a song is the most played/heard, why should it be kept in obscurity? Changing the rules has not only benefit Mariah, she just happens to have the most popular song during the holidays, but Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" could break AIWFCIY record, should it hit number one anytime in the future, the song is 65 years old.

Well, downloading music doesn't matter anymore. Most people stream because the music is available on YouTube and many other platforms and it still counts, hence AIWFCIY hitting the stop spot for three consecutive years now.
In the very distant future, I think that's a possibility though.

Will Christmas music, itself, survive the new modern era of downloads and social media? As on a bell curve, the peak in Christmas music "resurging" every year must surely have come and will one day be gone. Can you really not envisage a world where the kids say no to Christmas music and embrace the influx of multi-varied offers?

So, why did AIWFCIY become this huge Christmas phenomenon in 2019? Or was it 2018? Was it because of the Billboard rules change or release or special editions of Merry Christmas? Did Spotify help to make it a huge 60 million dollar hit?

Mariah's discography, while glorious and impressive, will eventually be in the past with those of us who have lived it as decades go by. That's why AIWFCIY is so important. AIWFCIY is bigger than Mariah herself. I doubt "I Will Always Love You", "My Heart Will On" and "Hero" will be a thing a hundred years from now. By then, she'll probably be the only diva of the past being played at Christmas time and her voice will make some people curious about her life and music.

Drake gets his 12th number one (103,605)

"I [guess] you're not on social media..." - What do you think *this* is?
"...prolly too old to keep up huh." - I guess you're not on a spellchecker.
"Well let me help you out with a short list:" - This is my point: the list is somewhat non-existent. Let's have a look:
"1. "Fantasy" had a moment with Latto" - Two years ago.
"2. "Its a Wrap" for months, so much she re–released it" - What number in the Billboard Charts did it reach?
3. "Touch My Body" is currently having its moment for the second time (if I'm correct)" - Do TikTok videos qualify as a 'resurgence'? I don't see Mariah booking a stadia tour on the back of them?
"4. And there's "All I Want for Christmas" - You consider this a "resurgence" - it's an annual event. Behave.
"All these are [streaming/social] media resurgences where the whole world lives and thrives off of these days." - That's about as spurious and as vague a comment as I have read on here.
"Hope [you're] clear now." - No, but it was fun. I enjoyed ya.

Touch My Body had a resurgence this year on TikTok. It's A Wrap garnered some Spotify plays and an EP release because of TikTok. Fantasy saw a resurgence because of Bradley Cooper's Free Guy movie. The Roof saw a resurgence because of her duet with Brandy for MC's Masterclass segment and the 25th Anniversary of Butterfly. The youngins are getting to know Mariah because of TikTok and movies.

As much as I love Music Box 30 - it has only led me to fall back in love with All I've Ever Wanted. It is somewhat odd that this never became a big ballad single, far better than any Whitney output as it is.

I must say I'm impressed with her songwriting so far out of all the new girls, she does stand out and has an uncanny ability for storytelling, that extra something that sets her apart from the rest. Her second album is surprisingly stronger than the first and that's saying a lot because that album was a smash. "Good Days" was my most played song according to Spotify last year (2022), and I know it's still gonna be at least top 5 this year - it's that good.

The belief that AIWFCIY will be MCs greatest accomplishment scares me more than if Psy Gangnum Style had a resurgence with 21 number ones, beating the Beatles number ones record. You all have got to stop that narrative. You have no many idea how many memes are coming across my social media timeline that basically say Mariah is defrosting. An old diva past her time a la Diana Ross, I can accept. An iconic Mrs. Claus, I can't. Mariah is so much more and her entire (caps) catalogue should be celebrated. And I love you Robert.

"In jerk"? Some things should be kept to yourself, Jamie. It's very cool you were in Wembley for Rainbow. How funny that we were once in the same room. You could have been stood right next to me. However, given that you're built like a brick shithouse I would have remembered. Or possibly not as I spent most of the concert in tears.

Whitney Houston (103,594)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
I have been very nostalgic this week from MC's early ballads to Toni Braxton to now Whitney Houston. I have to say love Whitney's early ballads like All At Once, Didn't We Almost Have It All, For The Love Of You, You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love, and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. I would be filled with so much joy listening to quiet storm radio in the late 80s and here a Whitney Houston ballad come on. You felt the pain and emotion in the song that she was singing about. Interpreting the emotion in a song and singing it with such conviction was Whitney's other gift. RIP Whitney.

by jaker20 from US

4 of his number ones are as a featured artist on the tracks. He's the featured artist. So he will always have those asterisks.
And it's not like Mariah is completely over. AIWFC literally just hit no.1 3 years ago, and if BER was handled properly, it would have been her 20th.
If Mariah wanted to play that game and get 5 more number ones, she could have just done a bunch of silly collabs, like these artists number ones that no one remembers a year later. But I don't think she's that desperate.
I think Mariah still has a couple of surprises up her sleeve. But even at this point, none of them will have the same career as Mariah. 19 no.1s and one of them a global timeless classic. Not even The Beatles or Elvis has a song that's in the same level as AIWFC, and never will Drake.

To be honest, I don't really care about that anymore like I used to. That record will be broken eventually, especially now that anybody can debut at number one, first was Mariah, then Ariana and now Drake. What none of them has is a song like "AIWFCIY". The "OSD" record was more important to me. Once "All I Want for Christmas Is You" becomes the longest running number one single on Billboard, now, that one will be tough to break. If OSD took 16 year, that one will take decades.

I can definitely lob the Mariah criticism non fans give her at him. I can't name more than two of his number ones. He is tied with Madonna and ahead of Janet, Whitney and Stevie Wonder. I like Drake but his name does not belong in the same stratosphere with any of those four.
