Re: The Ballads compilation (101,143) (101,145)

Seal's first two records are two of my absolute favorites. I love the first album because it combines so many different styles of music - electronic, alternative, blues. There's a live version of "Whirlpool" on the Killer EP from 1991 that is absolutely brilliant. And as much as I hate Mariah's being snubbed at the 1996 Grammys, I think the Grammys were justified in giving Record of the Year to Seal over Mariah/Boyz II Men. I've seen him twice in concert, and both times he was absolutely fantastic.

"Let It Flow" is my jam. I love the way she sings it. Toni has a very unique voice, you can't mistake her for anybody else. Her first album, you can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track, but my favorite "Secrets" has the jams I love more from her. "You're Making Me High", "Let It Flow", "How Could an Angel Break My Heart", love them all. Sadly her light kind of faded quickly after "Secrets".

Seal's first two albums were brilliant, I still play them today. As for Toni, I'm a big fan as well. Her voice is spectacular, and her debut album and Secrets I still play quite often. I love "Let It Flow" from Secrets, and "Breathe Again" from the debut.

Toni's house remixes with David Morales and Frankie Knuckles are definitely worth a listen. The remixes of "Unbreak My Heart", "Spanish Guitar", "I Don't Want to", and "You're Makin' Me High" are fantastic.
I'm also a big fan of Seal generally and many of the remixes of his 90s and early 00s stuff.

It's probably for the best right now until she can come up with a new sound by experimenting with some new young producers. I really can't think of any one producer that has really dominated the pop and R&B charts this year. Most songs this year have all sounded the same. Radio has been quite boring this year. Let's see if Taylor Swift changes my mind with Midnights on October 21. She has really been on a creative journey during the past 3 years. I would like MC to create a new album that takes her back to her beginnings focusing on her songwriting skills.

I always thought it was just a cash in album from Sony. Totally unnecessary because there was already a greatest hits. Unless it was going to go back and look completely at her more obscure ballads to shine light on her songwriting. Personally I'd rather a covers album at the time:
1. I'll Be There 2. Endless Love 3. Without You 4. Open Arms 5. Beautiful Ones 6. I Still Believe 7. Do You Know Where You're Going 8. Against All Odds 9. Didn't Mean To Turn You On 10. Bringing On The Heartbreak 11. I Want To Know What Love Is (new)

Nothing is happening in 2022. And honestly she deserves a break after a long pandemic. We are lucky she hoped on the BE Remix and that she did a little performance at the BET awards. Let's look forward to 2023 and hope there is new original music in the cards.

Butterfly announcement? (101,137)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

Fall is the time artists and record labels release new albums, complications, Christmas albums, and boxsets. I find it very odd that MC has not made an announcement about Butterfly's 25th anniversary release. September 16th is next week. Something must be happening with her label. Do we even know what label she is on anyway? Epic? RCA? Maybe she is dealing with a lot like Nick's baby announcements, backlash from her Queen of Christmas trademark application, and her Atlanta [home] being burglarized. I think that a new original pop ballad or remake released and hitting #1 on the Hot 100 would put a smile on her face. If only MC listened to me. Lol.

I'm not a huge Toni Braxton fan but I will give her props for Just Another Sad Love Song and How Could An Angel Break My Heart. How Could An Angel has one of the best emotionally driven bridges ever, and with Kenny G on the sax? Beautiful.

The Remixes (101,135)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
The Remixes was a missed opportunity. With any remixed song, there was almost always a radio edit included. Those radio edits should have been included on the album so more songs could be included. The second CD should have been filled with her slower, R&B remixes and include lesser known ones like UTS (Drifting Remix). Lazy tracklisting indeed.

It's the only album from MC which I don't have in my collection. Maybe I should change that. I love all her ballads, but the tracklist was a bit disappointing for a fan. For non-fans or casual Mariah listeners it's a good compilation.

Oh yes. The Remixes could have been so much better. Disc 2 in particular really messed up by including "Sweetheart", "Crybaby", "Breakdown", and "Loverboy (remix)". None of those tracks are remixes, including "Loverboy" which was just extra rappers inserted into the original version. Also a complete mystery why that version was the first track on the "Glitter" album.
And I would have loved to see more deep cuts on "The Ballads". All of the songs you mentioned would have been great. I think my ideal track listing (if they were sticking with singles releases) would have been:
1. Vision of Love 2. Love Takes Time 3. Can't Let Go 4. I'll Be There 5. Hero 6. Without You 7. Anytime You Need A Friend 8. Never Forget You 9. Endless Love (with Luther Vandross) 10. One Sweet Day (with Boyz II Men) 11. Forever 12. Butterfly 13. My All 14. I Still Believe 15. Whenever You Call (with Brian McKnight) 16. When You Believe (with Whitney Houston) 17. Can't Take That Away 18. Thank God I Found You (original) 19. Never Too Far
I think Toni Braxton should have also released a compilation like this. I could listen to her ballads all day. Probably my second favorite "diva" after MC.

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,130) (101,131)

Yes I agree. Much like The Remixes before it, The Ballads was a missed opportunity in a lot of ways. Of all the markets it was released in, Japan had the best tracklisting:
1. Hero 2. One sweet day 3. Endless love 4. Can't take that away 5. Open arms 6. Reflections 7. Butterfly 8. Love takes time 9. My all 10. Without you 11. Always be my baby 12. Vision of love 13. Can't let go 14. Anytime you need a friend 15. Thank God I found you (Make it last) 16. I'll be there 17. I still believe 18. Never too far 19. All I want for Christmas is you
So it had a number of the tracks you listed and removed some of the less ballad-y type songs. I get it probably had to have a certain hit-to-album track ratio, but I can't believe deep cuts like Vanishing, Till the End of Time, All I've Ever Wanted, Outside, Whenever You Call etc. didn't get a look in.
To the same degree The Remixes second disc annoys me, especially when towards the end it seems they gave up and just put on album tracks like Sweetheart and Crybaby rather than including something really rare like the Drifting Remix of Underneath the Stars or the club mixes for DYKWYGT etc. (This was before the EPs of course and would have been a good incentive to pick up the compilation.)
But we love everyone.

I always enjoy listening to this compilation but think the track listing could have been improved a bit. I would have loved to see "Never Forget You", "Forever", "Butterfly", "Whenever You Call (with Brian McKnight)","Can't Take that Away", "Thank God I Found You (original)" and "Never Too Far" included. Some of the songs included didn't really fit the theme IMO. "The Roof", "Dreamlover", "Always Be My Baby", and "TGIFY (Remix)" are all great but aren't really "ballads". And I have no idea why "How Much" and "Reflections" were on there instead of better songs from their respective albums.

This is why I literally burst into tears, when she announced she was about to sing it on the first night of her Caution Tour at the London Royal Albert Hall. No one in the hall that night had any idea she was going to sing this, and it was everything! Not a dry eye in sight and everyone was astounded by the vocals. Her live performance with Luther at RAH back then, is and will remain as one of the best duet performances in history IMO.

I'm pretty sure you would agree that watching Marian and Luther singing "Endless Love" live is like having a perfectly balanced, nourishing and non-fattening meal with no room for donuts. Not even the fat affirming obesity police could dispute that.

I actually did some calculations on what Mariah's weight would have to be to be obese and she is no where near it. Even Stevie Wonder can tell. I did my research fully before responding to your post.
It's not appropriate to call people obese especially when they are anything but obese.

It's amazing that when she's not releasing, she is tired. So it's probably something happening around her, that is not related to her music. She seems happy when she is making music. But when she is not making music, she's tired. I honestly think lambs are Mariah's happy place. And the people around her are too much to handle.

Endless Love is divine. For me, it beats out the original by miles. Lionel and Diana's version is nice, but both Luther and Mariah are superior singers and their voices are so rich and soulful and gel together so perfectly. Like a full bodied wine.
The live version in London is one of Mariah's best ever performances. I'm lucky to have the promo CD with that version on it. They also sang it live on Top of the Pops as well together. They sang a shorter version but it was still great.
The video is also one of my faves. The warm hues, Mariah looks so great, and I love her "studio" videos (except Infamous of course).
Just a beautiful song, sang wonderfully by both of them.
