Re: Through The Rain/AYNAF (99,465) (99,471) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I miss those songs too Terna. Yeah, the last true pop ballad. I remember non-fans (most friends of mine) really liked "Through the Rain". The video was a little hit at that time. It was played and wished by many people at music television. Everyone was happy for her, that she's back after the "Glitter disaster" with a typical Mariah song with lyrics people can relate to.

Bill, you are spot on for both.

Robert Anthony (at least make Circles a bonus track). I love that song.

Did you mean Your Girl instead of Yours? Yours is from Charmbracelet. I agree with this list but would axe Joy Ride in favour To the Floor (which I think you've called Tonight), to give the album more "edge".

Re: Through The Rain/AYNAF (99,461) (99,467) by Bill from the UK
TTR I get not performing well. Mariah's reputation had taken a pretty big hammering, her image was all over the place, and as much as I like the song it wasn't really radio friendly. It had too slow a build to the "money shot" of the bridge and end chorus, and I think it would have done better with live instrumentation, instead of the clinky Casio keyboard, some strings, a choir etc. It was as if the blueprint was there but it wasn't really coloured in.

As for AYNAF, it's a mystery to me how that didn't reach the top ten. It made it to #8 in the UK, following the #1 Without You of course which probably helped its performance. The remixes for that track are some of her best. The manic C&C Club Mix with the scatting at the end, gospel vocals, and then that gorgeous Soul Convention Remix. Beautiful.

Re: Say Something and I Wish You Knew (or Mine Again) (99,463) (99,466) by T from USA
The stars aligned and everything worked in Mariah's favour. It's actually a career miracle if you really think about it. It would've been another Charmbracelet in terms of success and who knows if AIWFCIY would've even grown if she never became cool again. A lot can be owed to JD and LA Reid who suggested she go back and collaborate with her friend. Mariah left only to her own devices produces something more along the lines of MIAMTEC or Rainbow.

Re: Through The Rain/AYNAF (99,461) (99,465) by Terna from Nigeria
I knew "Through the rain" wasn't going to be a big hit immediately I heard It, as it kind of came across as "cliché" for the lack of a better word. But I also knew even in that moment that it was an important recording for her and would be one of those songs that would stand the test of time. I can say it has and its become a classic the casual listener knows, but doesn't even know the singer, Kind of like "Hero". It's sad that was the last true Pop ballad she recorded as she ditched the format entirely and I miss those type of songs from her.

Re: Reimagining albums into 10 tracks (99,462) (99,464) by Bobby A from United States
I just got my 10 points.
1. It's Like That
2. We Belong Together
3. Shake It Off
4. Mine Again
5. Say Something
6. Stay The Night
7. One and Only
8. Yours
9. Joy Ride
10. Fly Like A Bird

Get My Number, Tonight, Circles, and I Wish You Knew were just album fillers to me.

Say Something and I Wish You Knew (or Mine Again) (99,463) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
We all know the story that Mariah and Jermaine collaborated at the last minute for the Mimi era in 2005. Meaning that It's Like That, Get Your Number, Shake It Off and We Belong Together would not be in the original tracklist for the comeback album in 2005. The original plan was to release Say Something as the leading single. As you all know that the pattern for second single would always be a ballad. So I always wonder whether Mariah would pick I Wish You Knew or Mine Again as the second single. I would think Mariah would pick I Wish You Knew. Will I Wish You Knew be as big as We Belong Together topping the charts for 14 weeks? Only God knows. Mariah said in her Japan interview "I almost named this album Joy Ride" so I guess that's the initial album title but then she changed it to The Emancipation of Mimi after she collaborated with Jermaine and recorded It's Like That.

Reimagining albums into 10 tracks (99,462) by T from USA
Some of Mariah's greatest albums with the best flow happen to be her ten track albums. Imagine Mariah only made albums with 10 tracks since the very beginning? Which song(s) would you leave off to create the perfect album. (Hint: it's not so easy.) I'll go first.

Debut: Prisoner
Daydream: Interlude, Open Arms
Butterfly: Reprise, Beautiful Ones
Rainbow: Interludes, DIDT, How Much
Glitter: Loverboy Remix, Twista
Charmbracelet: Boy, TTR Remix, Ir, YHRC
TEOM: (too hard to make into ten tracks)
E=MC2: Bye Bye, LV, LK, OOC
MOAIA: UOMF, MTJF, Impossible, IWTKWLI
MIAMTEC: Heavenly, OMT, $*/., Camouflage

Ten points to whoever can recreate TEOM into a perfect 10 track album.

Through The Rain/AYNAF (99,461) by Bobby A from United States
I was going through some more of my Mariah papers today. Why did Through The Rain stall at #81 and AYNAF at #12 on the Hot 100? TTR failed to resonate with radio and the public like other inspirational songs such as Hero, Make It Happen, One Sweet Day and Vision of Love. It even stalled on the Adult AC chart at #17. Ironically, it was a number #1 dance hit. The Hex Hector/Max Quayle and Full Intention remixes were some of her best dance remixes since Fantasy. I remember MC saying in an interview that Lyor Cohen insisted on an inspirational ballad to be the album's first single because of her personal and professional struggles during the Glitter era. AYNAF should have been a least a top 5 hit. I wonder what is the backstory behind its stall at #12. Maybe Tommy had something to do with it? Or was it just the way it usually was back then with 4th and 5th singles where they don't perform as well as 1st through 3rd singles? Just my thoughts.

Re: How Greatest Hits should've played out (99,455) (99,460) by Edward from USA
Since most people don't collect anymore, greatest hits albums are pointless, unless a few new non-rushed quality tracks are added. In the digital era, anybody can create their own Greatest Hits. For me it was sacrilege staining the #1's album with crap like Crapfinity. Different from when #1's was originally released, with quality tracks like "When You Believe", "I Still Believe", "Whenever You Call" and "Do You Know Where You're Going to". Even her remixes were worthy of being on the album, like "I Still Believe Pure Imagination". I've been thinking for a while that Mariah's heart is not in music anymore, all that is evidenced by her non-album collabos between between projects. Even for an album like The Rarities, she couldn't come up with a decent new track. The Rarities 2 would be amazing, even though she said there were no leftovers from the Butterfly sessions, but I'm pretty sure there are many other great tracks like "One Night". A Jazz album would be cool, but a Gospel album, well, she doesn't have the voice for that anymore. You can't whisper a whole Gospel album. I'm excited for the new music though, I just hope she at least blow on some songs.

Re: Original title for Somewhat Loved? (99,457) (99,459) by Edward from USA
Music Box was a 10-track album. The international version had "Everything Fades Away", but the official version only had 10 tracks. If the tracks are great, 10 tracks is great. I prefer Caution over MIAM any day. MIAM was full of fillers and missed opportunities at having some great tracks.

Re: Original title for Somewhat Loved? (99,457) (99,458) by Bill from the UK
Hmmm. I prefer the shorter albums myself. Don't forget the debut was supposed to be 10 tracks. And the US versions of Music Box and Merry Christmas are 10 tracks. Rainbow is 10 tracks if you remove the remixes and interludes (and Did I Do That lol). As much as I love it, the deluxe version of TEOM doesn't seem to ever end, and Memoirs is like one continuous 90 minute track, and Charmie outstays its welcome as well. My issue is the frequency of releases, but that's because we got spoiled with an album a year in the early days. I get she has kids and all that, so the gap between albums will be longer, but I was hoping shorter albums would mean a smaller space between albums, but here we are.

If Caution had more songs, it would have helped for a bigger first week opening with streaming numbers.

Re: How Greatest Hits should've played out (99,452) (99,455) by Bill from the UK
Yes. Please deliver me my jazz album before my time here is over. And Rarities 2 with more 90s tracks I am banging at the door for. As for Greatest Hits, yes, far too soon after #1's and everything screamed "end of contract". The only reason to buy was that Endless Love was finally on a Mariah album, the remix of AIWFCIY and the UK edition had the Westlife version of Against All Odds on it. I've always felt #1's is the superior album. Beautiful cover, and a concentrated track list really helps keep the record accessible, in spite of some obvious omissions. The UK edition is great with the addition of Without You and Mahogany.

Re: Original title for Somewhat Loved? (99,449) (99,453) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
I would prefer if Somewhat Loved and Runway be included in the standard tracklisting for Caution album so that the total songs would be 12 songs. I found it weird that Caution album only had 10 songs.

Re: How Greatest Hits should've played out (99,448) (99,452) by T from USA
I think one new studio album, one jazz album, one gospel album, and part 2 of the Rarities as well as an updated 4 disc GH is all we need from Mariah this decade. In that order.

Because what Mariah loves doesn't become a hit, whilst if she doesn't like it, it becomes a fan favourite and critics like it.

Re: Caution (99,444) (99,450) by Bobby A from United States
Bill, I would like to have known if The Art of Letting Go title had never been leaked in Wal-mart's website, how the album would have been perceived. MIAM was such a crazy title from the start. Also, I would like to know how the title The Art of Letting Go title made it onto Wal-Mart's website anyway. Wasn't there supposed be an original duet with R. Kelly titled I Can't Love U?

Original title for Somewhat Loved? (99,449) by Bobby A from United States
I am looking back at a news article from MCA on 08-10-13 titled Tracklist Revealed for Mariah's new album. Track 5 is The Dream collaboration called Hope Street. I think that it must have been the original title of Somewhat Loved. It's funny that we all have forgotten Somewhat Loved. Do you think it will ever make it on a greatest hits collection? Lol.

Re: How Greatest Hits should've played out (99,437) (99,448) by Billy from Greece
I totally agree. It's sad that thirty years into her career the available greatest hits set focuses only on her first decade. I would love an elaborate retrospective but we ain't getting that. We got The Rarities though, which I absolutely loved, so that's something.

More collaboration needed (99,447) by Bobby A from United States
When I look at the songwriters on the first two singles from Mary J. Blige's new album, I can only hope MC is looking at H.E.R., D'mile, DJ Khaled, Lucky Daye, Denisia Andrews, and Brittney Coney. MC is going to have to shake it up some on MC16 if she is going to even expect some airplay. MJB is going to own February with her new album and her Superbowl performance.
