I didn't like "Cool On You" at first, but I love it now. It definitely fits perfect with that album.

Okay am I the only lamb that (still) get their life to I Stay In Love. I can't listen to that song without singing along; voice inflections and all. I know some will say "it's WBT number 3". I get it, but dare I say I like and listen to it more than WBT and DFAU.
Btw I'm That Chick single handedly inspired me to do a MC underrated grooves playlist so it's far to say I'll choose it over Migrate in hindsight and Cruise Control is still fun to listen to as well. I love how it ends then goes into (you guessed it ) I Stay In Love.
E=MC2 isn't one of my favorite albums though, only because I felt like it was just a collection of radio friendly songs and not as in-depth and unique as some of her previous (and post) efforts, but I Wish You Well, Side Effects, Love Story and the other songs mentioned are they gems I revisit. Oh and I probably listen to 4real 4real more than anything on that album. That's my jam.

I absolutely love "Cool On You". What don't you like about "Mesmerized"? That's another I keep on repeat with its disco/BeeGee's arrangement. I also love "Lullaby of Birdland". Anything new that Mariah sings gets my attention. I know everyone is crazy for "Everything Fades Away", "Do you Think of Me", and "Slipping Away". But I am a legacy Lamb and wore those out long ago when they came out originally. I had the Dreamlover single on cassette back in '93. So, I skip them now.

I've come to realize that the biggest reason why (Mesmerized aside) I gravitate towards this song the most out of The Rarities is because it reminds me so much of the E=MC2 era - slick, straightforward, sassy and fun. It still suffers from demo-itis with the spare, minimalist production approach, but could still have easily fit and even replace any of the weaker songs on that album.

I've always loved this album. I remember the day this album was released. I was working at a Target and it was everywhere, of course I bought my copy after my shift ended. The choice to pick Bye Bye as a second single was not a good one. Cruise Control would have been better as a single. It was the first time I would purchase my first iTunes songs and videos, with the singles and fabulous videos. Especially following Touch My Body. I really enjoy all the songs too though, not one I would skip to. And the bonus tracks for Japan were awesome too. It's a shame it didn't get the attention it deserved. #justiceforeinstein I also pick I'm That Chick over Migrate, I love that it's disco, the version with the intro is better. My favorites are 4Real 4Real, O.O.C., Cruise Control, and I'm That Chick. We definitely need another album like that.

I was listening to the album today and I gotta say I don't remember when I actually listened to a whole album without skipping a song. Each song, even the weaker ones are good on this album. And surprisingly still sounds fresh. Like if they released this album today it would sound current.

E=MC3. Two towsun' twenny one. Watch it. (97,304)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom

Cruise Control is the shit. It's the best thing on E=MC2 and beats everything on The Emancipation of Mimi. "Can't nobody can't nobody tell me nuttin' when he comes into view, cos he's the flyest ting when he be cruising' on me avenue." This album was mature and sophisticated and funnnnnnn and Cruise Control the best thing on it. It's one of the best songs she's ever done. If anyone disagree then "step up, step up, bottle, broken". You can keep your One Mo Gen and Givin' Me Life snoozefests while you sit in your armchair with your cocoa. I wanna sing, dance and party.
1. Cruise Control 2. Migrate 3. I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time
Those should have been the first three songs on the album and the order of single release. Starting the album with 2008, watch it, made sense. Nobody really wants ballads as single releases anymore, do they?
E=MC2's problem was waiting so long to release it. She should have released it an absolute maximum of two years after TEOM release. She was riding high. She was the biggest artist in the world again but she went on a tour and disappeared. When she came back, I think the public had moved on. Bye Bye was the nail in the coffin. She was *cool* - and then she was writing in a book on a sofa wiping a fake tear from her eye. And that was the end of that.
Roll on E=MC3.

I wonder why BB was completely left off the MC30 celebrations. I was thinking they'll include the Akon remix. Also "Side Effects" was left off, and I was hoping for the Busta remix. I know SE wasn't a single but neither was "You're Girl" and "I Only Wanted" but those received EPs.

The miscarriage was near the end of 2008. She promoted the album pretty heavily from February 2008 (SNL) to November 2008 (AMA's). Then that was it. No tour. By January of 2009 she had started working on MOAIA.

First of all, Mimi L: welcome back. You have been missed. Hope all's been well with you.
Love that idea of FTR video. For some reason, or actually because of the music used in the M perfume ad, I always see M flapping around in the water when I hear the song.
Also, bad singles choices side, didn't she give up on the album early because she went through that traumatic miscarriage at that time? That's what I remember hearing or reading recently when she spoke about her miscarriage. Can't remember how that came up now a decade later.
And my vote goes to I'm That Chick of course. One of the highlights amidst that stunning "non cohesive" body of work.

Agree, I'm That Chick should have been a single but I would not put it after TMB. E=MC2 is one album that released not the best singles. Migrate could have been next or Cruise Control, two outstanding songs that sounds different from her past music but still relevant and appealing. For The Record is one record I always regret for not being released as a single, which could have been her third single. Together with Migrate or Cruise Control, it could be her 20th No.1 song! Yes, another wish list that time. Then end the album with ITC.

I'm That Chick was also performed everywhere (MTV Hills, GMA, Fashion Rocks, Canadian Idol). Migrate was performed on Saturday Night Live and BET's relativity special. Bye Bye only on American Idol and Oprah. Now that I think of it E=MC2 had mega promo. Not to mention the awards shows she performed on.

I agree. Followed by Side Effects to close the album. It's weird that ITC wasn't even released as a single at all because E=MC2 was originally named "That Chick" with ITC being the first single. Don't know what LA Reid was thinking.
"For The Record" could also have been a good closing single. I always had this vision of her doing the FTR music video and in the part where she references her old songs (like ABMB, My All, UTS, WBT, CLT and Honey) she could've paid homage to her iconic videos. That would've been amazing.

I'm also just going to put this out there, but not releasing and promoting "Cruise Control" was a huge miss. That song is way ahead of the trends and was catchy and sexy. I feel like E=MC2 is the album which shows Mariah's songwriting range and and it's sad that it didn't get the attention it deserved. I mean it was a hit but it could have been massive especially riding off the TEOM wave. What I mean by songwriting range is basically she had everything in this album - the ballads, the uptempos, the Jamaican flavor for CC, the club songs, and everything in between. So people who only think Mariah writes love ballads and sad songs would've gotten to see that's not all she is capable of. Also Mariah was looking amazing, all eyes were on her for her transformation. It was just set for success and then they release BB as the second single. Don't get me wrong, I think BB is beautiful but it was definitely not the right second single.

It's funny that now that you post this I'm thinking ITC would be my choice too. I usually like "Migrate" but I just quickly sang the chorus of both in my head and I would have to agree ITC is more catchy and would've probably gotten the attention of the young audience. Not that "Migrate" wouldn't do the same but ITC just has a catchier feel to it. E=MC2 had so much potential. The single choices just messed it up.

For the follow up to Touch My Body in the summer of 2008? I think I'm That Chick as more poppy dance music was starting to emerge on the horizon and Mariah could've been one step ahead of the curve.

A few quick online searches has proved you wrong, it seems. There are many sites that state that artists whose ventures don't make a lot of money are required to pay back the advance or have them recouped out of royalties or future earnings.
Music Labels are not charitable enterprises and (admittedly, at a guess) I shouldn't think they give two shiny shits if they have a legacy artist on their books or not. I shouldn't think it a reasonable use of time or money if they are not getting adequate return for it.
If Mariah still had a lot of power I don't think she would be dictated to by a record label about "grats" and so on.
However, this is all moot if Mariah writes an album that people want to buy.
