The B sides (95,546)
by Will from Australia
| |
|
|
I'm actually stoked to have Slipping Away and Everything Fades Away, they're two of my favourite Mariah songs so to be finally able to add to my hundred different playlists is a dream. I have the actual single of Dreamlover that has DYTOM and I've never liked it so I could do without that on the album.
I am surprised that nobody here is calling out the inclusion of Close My Eyes (2020), that's more of an unnecessary addition and to be honest is on there for herself and not the fans.

I'm presuming out of respect for 911 anniversary she didn't realise any MC30 EP's this week. Wonder what we will get this week.

Tokyo Dome concert (95,543)

I think the reason Mariah decided to add the Daydream Tokyo Dome concert to the rarities is because it is 25th anniversary of the Daydream album/era and she wanted the fans to celebrate two different anniversaries all at the same time, and she doesn't have to worry about trying to create another special moment with the holiday season soon approaching and we know MC and the holiday season work together hand, and hand. Even though a [Daydream] celebration would have been great. But overall I am happy with MC given us this year to celebrate her career.

I wish I understood Why I can't get over you at all But you push me to the side And I come a running when you call (come a running) You step outside of my life And you leave me waiting for a sign (waiting for a sign) - Lyrics: Mariah Carey This is why MC is a brilliant songwriter. Glitter week (95,541)
by CMC from NY,NY
| |

|
We kind of got nothing this week in regards to EP's being released on Fridays for the era's. We got Save The Day video on a Saturday - don't really think that counts though. Does anyone remember back early summer Kristofer her makeup artist posted to his story, "working on something special" and it was Glitter related, a new current pitot of 80's makeup he did on Mariah? That was the week of Glitter announced to streaming services. Then we got everything related to the anniversary and any more Glitter promo postponed because of the many events of the early summer. Being that she seems to have recorded so much for Glitter that's unreleased I wonder if we are getting a special Glitter EP, with more unreleased tracks, remixes. Maybe she's dropping it as more of a surprise. One can dream.

Save The Day music video (95,540)
by Malcolm from Asia

In all honesty, I don't hate the video because I didn't expect that we will get it nor expect that it'll be a big budget one since it's a partnership with US Open Tennis Championships, kind of similar for what she did with 100%. I just like it for what it is especially I think this is the first for a long time that she perfected the lip syncing for a music video lol, it's seamless I love it and hey this is more well directed and edited compared to I Don't, that's absurd.

Re: The Rarities tracklisting (95,539)

I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get more unreleased material from the 1997-2005 period and that b-sides like "Everything Fades Away", "Do You Think of Me", and "Slipping Away" took up space that could have gone to completely new material. They are great songs, but most fans already know them. I would have been happy to have them released on digital EPs as part of #MC30.
Surely "Butterfly"/"Rainbow" had more outtakes? And she was working on "Glitter" for four years, so there has to be more music from that project. I would not have minded hearing a recording of (adult) Mariah singing that song "Billie's Blues (Turn You Loose)" that was used in the movie during that scene with Billie Frank and her mother. Didn't she also record something with Prince for the film?
And I'm not sure that the Live at Tokyo Dome disc is really necessary. I'd rather have audio or video from the Rainbow or Charmbracelet tours if we are getting tour footage/audio. Those tours were much more interesting than the Daydream tour.
If she was planning to do a two-disc collection, I would rather have two discs of rarities/b-sides rather than one disc of rarities/b-sides and one disc of concert audio (from a concert most fans already know well).
With all of that said, I'm very interested to hear the original recording of "Loverboy" as well as "Here We Go Around Again" and "One Night". Fingers crossed that she is planning another collection like this because this is definitely only a fraction of her rare/unreleased material.

I think the video is okay. Of course no art, but it's not like "I don't" at all luckily. MC looks good and the car. Haha. The mixing with tennis and the pandemic is a bit strange. But hey it's not that bad.

Without You (95,537)

Hi all, I know there are more interesting things going on right now with all the releases but I just wanted to share this little "story". I watched a show called the best love songs of the 90ies. Like every time Mariah was on it, number 7 or 8. What was a surprise that everyone (German actors and other celebreties) were talking only positive about Mariah. One said she loves her athletic singing with emotions that speaks to everybody, the actor said he has loved her voice since the first listen. That's how it looks.

Wow. I love it. I can't wait to play The Rarities on my birthday trip to Virginia in late October. It is nice to [hear] how her vocals sound so effortlessly. Her enunciation of each word is [unparalleled] to other singers. I am ordering my vinyls Monday night. I have already ordered the Japan edition of The Rarities and 2 copies of Mariah Carey from an indie record store in the Atlanta area and the Wal-Mart exclusive.

Strongly agree. I mean it's Mariah, so to some level we knew the vanity shot montage was coming, but this is still weird and awkward, even by her standards. The worst part is that the song's lyrics paint a much better visual than the video does, and for this one, she definitely should have gone the obvious route. Whatever happened to interspersing it with videos of our frontliners instead as a tribute to them? It's not innovative, but it would make much more sense and not leave viewers wondering what the hell they just watched.
Also, isn't it just sad that the last real video that had an interesting concept, was fun, and at least had Mariah step away a bit from her comfort zone and be a little less serious was Up Out My Face from a full decade ago? Since then the desperation to cling to the sex symbol persona has been top priority to be on full display that we have already come to expect it every single time she releases a video.

For those who don't mind being spoiled ahead of the album release, MC posted a longer clip of Here We Go Around Again on Insta. Honestly, hearing fresh 1990/debut era vocals is just astounding. From what I've heard this song sounds so, so good.

Here We Go Around Again (95,526)
by enwar00 from usa

Here We Go Around Again has to be the most 80s sounding song I've ever heard from Mariah. In a dated 80s kind of way. But I'm still here for it and will dance and bop to it on the most 80s kind of way. I'm so excited for The Rarities. And especially because Do You Think Of Me, Everything Fades Away, and Slipping Away will finally have a home and be more accessible.

Save the Day (95,525)

This music video feels like "I Don't" crossed with "I Want to Know What Love Is". I'm confused about how this song has been linked with a tennis tournament. The lyrics just do not match in anyway. Everything about this song and the video seems so haphazard. Remember when Mariah said she couldn't bear to make another video in denim shorts? I wish she'd apply that to hanging out in the back of cars.

My sentiments exactly. What bright spark at Sony selected the album versions of Breakdown and Sweetheart when perfectly the good Mo Thugs and Story remixes were available is beyond me. And Crybaby should have been kicked off for I Still Believe/Pure Imagination. But who am I?

The Rarities tracklist (95,522)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

As fans of course we want her entire unreleased catalog ideally dropped all at once in one perfect package. But of course Mariah's also a businesswoman and cannot give everything away. Also, maybe she's just not comfortable releasing all of them yet. And of course there's the technical side of things such as licensing, etc. that may complicate stuff. Yes, having previously released b-sides on there taking up space that should have been allotted to actual unreleased material is a little disappointing, but on the other hand it's actually nice that they now have a compilation to belong to. It makes Mariah's lesser known music more accessible to the public, which is the goal. And hey, at least it's not as bad as putting the album versions of Crybaby, Sweetheart, and Breakdown on The Remixes just because they happen to have some rapping in them.
I'm just glad there are more unreleased tracks than I expected. Half of the album - that isn't too bad. She's gotta save some for future compilations. Besides, I'm just grateful that Mariah is actually releasing this stuff while she's still alive. At least she still has control over what she wants to put out. That's way better than what happened to Michael Jackson, where I doubt he would have even allowed to make public much of the stuff released in his posthumous discography, let alone have them be horribly reworked by producers he himself possibly would not have chosen to work with.
Should there be a Rarities 2, at least we know there still are old songs that can still make it in there along with other bonus tracks from her latter albums. Maybe not as exciting or impressive quality-wise, but it's still Mariah, so we will still lap that up.
