Re: I am Free (90,208) (90,219) by B from USA
Side Effects is the best song on E=MC2. I wish they had released it as a single.

Re: Mariah's greatest lyric (90,178) (90,218) by B from USA
I'm torn when it comes to Languishing. I think it is perfect as is but sometimes I find myself wishing it was longer.

Re: Two voices (90,215) (90,217) by B from USA
We will never have another Whitney or Mariah in our lifetime or possibly ever.

Re: Caution (90,150) (90,216) by B from USA
Correction: Caution has now sold over 100,000 copies in pure sales in the US. Wonder what it's sold when streams are included, does anyone know?

Two voices (90,215) by Terna from Nigeria
I stumbled on this on IG. Wow so strange, kinda low key got goosebumps at the harmony part. Would we ever have another Whitney or Mariah in this lifetime?

Re: Mariah's greatest lyric (90,212) (90,213) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Oh yes, "Looking in" is even greater than "Close my eyes" if I think about it. That song is a pure poem and I also think it's one of her most personal songs. I love the lyrics since I heard Daydream on cassette back then. I remember that because of this song I wanted to understand all her lyrics. So in 95/96 I had a big dictionary and I tried to translate the song. And I knew Mariah is so special, simply the best not only because of her voice, her look but because of her songwriting. That's my favorite part until today:

Don't say she takes it all for granted
I'm well aware of all I have
Don't think that I am disenchanted
Please understand
It seems as though I've always been
Somebody outside looking in
Well here I am for all of them to bleed
But they can't take my heart from me
And they can't bring me to my knees
They'll never know the real me

Re: Mariah's greatest lyric (90,122) (90,212) by Norman from USA
From Looking In, I can never forget this whole verse:

"She smiles through a thousand tears
And harbors adolescent fears
She dreams of all
That she can never be
She wades in insecurity
And hides herself inside of me"

For me, it's always felt like her most personal song; followed closely by Side Effects.

When The Party Is Over (90,210) by MC1989 from Spain
I'm so obsessed with this song by Billie Eilish. How I wish Mariah would do a ballad like this, just her voice and a piano.

Re: I am free (90,206) (90,209) by Norman from USA
Hey Will. Oh yeah. I'd definitely be interested in knowing more about what happened with that. There's a lot to uncover, it seems.

Thanks, Tijl and Norman. I appreciate your kind words. I found the interview that I was speaking of, where MC discusses why she wrote "Side Effects".

Re: Greatest emotional ballads (90,205) (90,207) by B from USA
Love Takes Time
Can't Let Go
Just to Hold You Once Again
When I Saw You
Butterfly
My All
After Tonight
Lead The Way
I Only Wanted
We Belong Together
Miss You (Most at Christmas Time) is so underrated. When she sings Cry., Camouflage, Portrait I really feel it. On Cry. and Camouflage you can feel her heartbreak and when she sings Portrait you can feel how her past experiences have made her guarded and insecure and yet against all odds she remains hopeful.

Re: I am free (90,191) (90,206) by Will from Australia
Great topic Norman. I’d like to know what happened behind the scenes with Walter and what he told Tommy and how it effected her parting from someone she was so close to and creatively just gelled to create masterpieces.

We Belong Together

Re: I am free (90,196) (90,202) by Norman from USA
Hey Jeff. You're right about that. I think she has a number of things she could talk about that would put a spotlight on things that a lot of people struggle with. She doesn't write those heavy songs from nothing.

Dear Jeff. Thank you for sharing that. I am also healing from PTSD following a relationship with a cluster B personality. It's like going through hell. Bless you.

6. One Sweet Day

Mariah doing great in streaming era (90,198) by jaker20 from US
Rolling Stone has a new weekly chart of most streamed artists and Mariah is at number 241, higher than popular recent artists like Ava Max, Sia, Selena Gomez, and also Madonna and Whitney. She will probably be in this chart's top 3 around Christmas time.

Re: I am free (90,192) (90,197) by Norman from USA
Bill, that grooming rumor is interesting. I've never heard of it before. How long has it been around? I do think it's more of a decline than her always sounding like this, however.

Re: I am free (90,196) by Jeff from USA
I remember when E=MC2 came out, MC did an interview and was asked why she wrote "Side Effects". She said something along the lines of, "I wrote it because I had to write it." That was one of the most honest answers I've ever heard from her. As someone who has PTSD from a previous abusive relationship, I would like to see her speak to that. She has the opportunity to help be a light in the darkness for many who would identify. But, and it's a huge caveat, only if she is in the place to speak to it without causing her harm.

Re: Close My Eyes (90,195) by Jeff from USA
Andrew, you know I adore you, but let us have our moment. Life is hard, and posting that was a little cathartic. And just think, we could have gone with, "Did I Do That?". Haha.
