I'm responding to your post about you saying "the music industry does not have much control over anything anymore" which is incorrect. And everything you explained contradicted yourself.

Being triggered is one thing, but basically sabotaging an artist so they won't be number one is a different monster. Brenda's team's making sure she is promoting, she has a new video, she's giving interviews, she's on Tik Tok, she has an EP with different versions of the song. They are just making sure the song has the best chance at hitting the top spot, it's business. Just like Mariah has been doing it for years.

I think Mariah reaches the top next week for such a small margine. Airplay, streaming and sales are all going to blow up from next week forward, it's a tight race, but Mariah is still ahead.

MC was going for a more polished than over-produced second album. I think that she accomplished that. Tommy probably was not too happy with the end result and album sales. I am sure he told MC after MTV Unplugged that she needs a huge pop album for her third album. Hence, Music Box was created and fulfilled Tommy's desires. Her creativity just got better and better after MB. She better bring it with MC16.

Everyone's jealous. That's all it is. Yes, Mariah's resurgent success has triggered a lot of people, even fans of more current pop girls. Labels, music media, execs, artists, industry people. They are seething. That's how you know that she’s doing something right.
Mariah [has] the best career. Having dominated an era. And then after her peak, comes a classic that will outlast everyone. No one has that combo, not Elvis, not The Beatles, not anyone. That's triggered a lot of people, the media, labels, execs, artists, industry people. Because that pushes her career above and beyond.
I think with her 18th no.1 15 years ago, she got a bit scared about actually beating [The Beatles]. Everyone's coming after her. I think she was unsure if she wanted it. But after AIWFCIY, she actually realized it's very achievable, and if she does the world won't implode. And if she doesn't, someone else will. I think Taylor will attempt it.
But I don't think Mimi cares about her critics anymore. She seems like she's just enjoying all of the icings on the cake.
As for Darlene, I was hoping that they would collab for Christmas BPCH. I was so sure it would be a classic.

Let's count the fillers on "Emotions" shall we? 1. "And you don't Remember" - I rarely play this song, it just isn't strong enough and is indeed one of her weaker ballads with a high note thrown in just because. 2. "So Blessed" - I personally love this song, but I also recognize it ain't no classic and quite forgettable. Even Mariah herself was like "oh please which so blessed" when the lambs made her pick an absolute favorite in a versus format a few years back. 3. "You're So Cold" - Oh my, what a waste of space a better song would've occupied and it was 5 whole minutes long, hideous. Skipped every single time. 4. "If it's Over" - Another weak ballad with a high note thrown in. This song actually is sort of disjointed, as its feel doesn't match the lyrics. It is a breakup song that sounds Gospel. With the gospel sound, one expects to hear an uplifting lyric or inspiring one, but this is dark. She got it right with "I am free" and "Anytime you need a friend". This record was also kinda what turned the general public off her high notes because the placements came across as "just because", and with such a display on the title track, the rest should've had it toned way down in the background like on "Can't Let Go". The saving grace for this album are her vocals which are top notch capturing just how powerful her instrument is.

Robert-Anthony, the music industry doesn't have much control over anything anymore. The music industry as we knew it, it's forever gone. They can't influence streaming platforms to block users from playing the music they like, radio just goes along with what's trending or they stay out of the game. Fans have more control, instead of calling like crazy to request, we just go and stream, everything is way different. As I have stated, these two songs have legs of their own, the one that makes it to number one will be based on its own merit and promotional push on big events. AIWFCIY is a pure number 1, people keep buying it after all these years, they keep playing it and streaming it, no gimmicks. If Mariah really wanted, she could break The Beatles' record, just three great collabs with Drake, Ariana and Taylor Swift should take her there. I don't really care for that record though, the way things are, Taylor will eventually top them both.

I'll just say this, between those two records, one is on the cusp of being certified Diamond - her third if I might add, while the other still has a long way to go (the numbers never lie). There's a reason why "Vision of Love" and "Love Takes Time" were the songs chosen for the tribute - they are instantly recognizable classics (even in that time), that have stood the test of time, the kind of songs seasoned songwriters would kill to have to their credit, written by a then 19 year old a testament in itself and can only be found on the most stellar debut ever by an artist - Mariah Carey.

The music business isn't a sweet easy going industry. Every artist will tell you that including sweet Dolly Parton. Record executives aren't playing nice when they are promoting a song to get it to number #1. There are some underhanded strategies being done behind the scenes to make it happen at the UMG executive offices. If RATCT goes to number #1, a huge television media frenzy will be made about it that week. Just my two cents from Texas.

Um Spotify has its own version of digital payola, with reduced royalties for some kind algorithmic boost via playlists. And Brenda's team have been very aggressive this year, having multiple versions included in playlists and having it strangest playlists like pop and teen playlists. These are Spotify curated playlists.

I would 1000% agree with all saying that Emotions is the superior album, far and away. The debut sounds so dated in 2023, where as Emotions has a pure timelessness to it, plus one of Mariah's more unique album art (meaning not just a close up of her face, or in a power stance).

"The numbers never lie"? Do you mean sales equate quality? That's a dangerous path to walk when talking Mariah Carey albums. Is every album that sold more than Butterfly better than it? Many will agree, but a great many will disagree. I will say this, an as example: E=MC2 is definitely a better record than The Emancipation of Mimi, despite selling far less.
What, then, if you had to select three post-1997 ballads to be sung to Mariah in tribute at an awards show would you and others select? They need to be well-known and within the capability of the artists selected to sing them.

So true. My my mother has the "original" debut vinyl from 90, she bought it right after hearing the phenomenal "Vision of love". I didn't know she had her debut. But when I became a fan with Daydream, she told me she loved "Vision of love". She also loves Sade, I have my musical taste from her.

Brits sent the song "Sausage Rolls for Everyone" to #1 at Christmas time, so y'all don't have a leg to stand on in this regard.
I'm not worried about Brenda Lee. I like the song, but Mariah's song is superior. They're different styles of song by different types of singers, so there's really no comparison here.

I agree. "Emotions" is far and away a better album than the debut. The debut album is over-produced and lacks the personality and Mariah-ness that MC brought to subsequent albums.
Early on, Mariah correctly lamented that the record label watered down her sound for the album. I like the four singles and "Vanishing" from the album, but that's about it. I don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through.
The label really should have tried harder to support the "Emotions" album. It felt like they purposely held back on promotional push in order to "reign Mariah in" from taking more creative control and going in a more R&B/soul-based direction.

""Emotions" was also a near sophomore slump that just wasn't as strong as the first record, neither were the tunes even as memorable like the debut."
I must differ, also. But go with me here, you may be surprised how this ends. "Emotions", the album, is superior to "Mariah Carey", its predecessor. The former has 80's-hangover style production, far less sophisticated lyrics, and basic tunes on half the record. The latter has the title track, Can't Let Go, Make It Happen, So Blessed and the majestic Till The End of Time - it is, in every aspect, superior. "Mariah Carey" had to have a great ballad shoe-horned onto the end of it to make it better. It is thus far the only MC album I have never owned.
However, everything else in your post is *cough* spot on. The singing style, too-clever melodies and over-production is old hat. It makes it very difficult for songs to be sung in karaoke or in tribute.
It is slightly frustrating that in tribute to Mariah she - and we - had to listen to Vision of Love and Love Takes Time. She has written over one hundred songs since then. But what successful ones can be reproduced? I think we all need and want to move past the pre-No.1's catalogue, right?
Chest voice not head voice. Semi-tone keychange not octave keychange. Simple structure chord progression not complicated altered second verse with no middle eight chord progression. Meaningful Universal lyrics not Fritos kitchen window lyrics. On trend producers not, well, Jermaine Dupri.

What in the actual [censored]? It's not a conspiracy. It's called marketing a song that's already popular and trying to get it to #1. The same way Mariah markets AIWFCIY every year is no different then Brenda Lee putting out a music video for her song. Um, didn't MC make 4 videos for AIWFCIY? And whoever wrote the message "now that they slapped a blonde wig on Brenda" - are you serious? Stop trying to make a conspiracy out of everything when there is none.

Thanks for the update, Edward. Seems like there is a considerable effort this year to keep MC from getting to number one or staying number one for multiple weeks this year. UMG is Brenda Lee's record label. They are really going all out this year with this huge promotional push to celebrate RATCT's 65th anniversary. But why now after 4 years of AIWFCIY being the number one Christmas song?
Well I think I know why. Some people in the music and television industry are tired of hearing MC being called the queen of Christmas. It started when MC wanted to trademark the Queen Of Christmas last year. She angered Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan. Many in the music and television industry were angered by MC's trademark move as well. So, I feel this is their payback for MC attempting to take the queen of Christmas all for herself and from sweet Darlene Love. Everyone already feels sorrow for her how Phil Spector used her voice and she never was publicly credited on a lot the songs she did for him. Phil Spector controlled her early career and was content to leave her uncredited on the songs he did for him.
Do you think that I have hit on something?

Rockin Around The Christmas Tree is bloody awful. Why it is so popular in the United States is beyond comprehension. But, then, we are talking about a country that sprays cheese out of a can. I'll add it to the list of American Unforgivables.

According to Talk of the Charts predictions, AIWFCIY will be number one next week, but judging by the numbers, RATCT might top it the week after. As I said, it's going to be an interesting journey for both songs. Maybe they'll alternate at the top, but Brenda would set a record almost impossible to break. Should she hit numbe one, RATCT would be the song with the longest time to get to the top spot, 65. She can have it though. Other than that, Brenda didn't write her song, so she doesn't make money from it really. We definitely need Mariah to dethrone Lil Nas.

I think MC could have recorded the phone book for her debut album and been successful. Her voice was so amazing and so unheard of at the time. She truly is a once in a generation artist.

Brenda's label just wants to capitalize on the success of the song, Mariah has been doing it since it 2017. While Mariah angered some of these ladies, I don't think there's a conspiracy to block her from reaching the top. Promotion makes a difference but these two songs have legs of their own. I think Brenda will snatch at least one week this Christmas season. She was reading comments from fans, and they were very sweet to her. There was a lamb who stated they would love for her to be number one. Brenda is a sweet lady.
