Tony/Stacey (36,490) by Nattalie from USA
Exactly Tony, it's an insult to say that Rhianna can sing. It's like saying my dog is in tune when he barks or something. I just don't understand. Stacey, even though I don't like Rhianna, I wouldn't call her a copy cat in terms of saying she has rap artist in her song as she sings. A whole lot of people in ever genre do it and I doubt they are thinking of Mariah as they do it. It's almost like when people say, I hate it when the gospel industry take the secular routes ideas, knowing that secular music takes ideas from the gospel route all the time ever since and before James Brown. It's just a style, now how you do it is what makes a difference. For example Lady Gaga clearly copys off of Madonna. Not that I care about either of them ,but that's just an example.

Congrats (36,489) by Will from England
Congratulations to Mariah for getting her 16th #1 on the Dance charts with Triumphant. See, it may not be breaking records on the Hot 100, but it's still adding to her collection of many #1s now.

Charmbracelet (36,488) by Licia from USA
Tobby, CB is one of my favorite CDs. It's hard to find fans who appreciate CB. Of all her CDs, this is the one that is close to my heart.

Charmbracelet (36,487) by T from USA
We're getting close to the ten year anniversary of the Charmbracelet album. I'd just like to say this is one of my favourite MC albums. It wasn't about style or image, it was all about substance. The lyrics are some of the greatest she's ever written and the sound is so soothing. For anyone who hasn't checked out this album, I suggest you give it a go.

Are you for real? (36,486) by Tony Sciacchitano from Australia
Please, do not insult Whitney, Mariah or Celine by saying Rihanna can sing. Are you for real? If you think she can sing, please don't call yourself a Mariah fan, you'd just be insulting the rest of us.

Cavewoman haha (36,485) by Jamie from UK
Hilarious Bob! Sometimes I think people take it too far with the "without so-so, there would be no so-so". Whitney Houston was not the first to sing like she did, she was just exceptionally good at it, that is all.

RadChad (36,483) by Stacey from USA
Well said. If anything, Rhianna is a copycat herself, imitating MC by including rappers in her pop songs. Anyone remember Fantasy ft. ODB? Sony thought MC was crazy and gave her static. The song did well and the rest is history. That song was well ahead of its time.

Desiree re: 36,461 (36,482) by Anonymous from
Mariah was writing music both on her own and with her brother Morgan in the mid 1980's. She was also learning tricks of the trade from Gavin Christopher at the time Whitney's debut came out. What does this mean? It means Mariah wasn't influenced by Whitney. Sure, I wouldn't doubt she may have picked up a thing or two listening to Whitney, but I wouldn't say she was influenced by her. In fact, if you want to be technical, Mariah's head was filled with music from the "get go" so she was influenced by everyone she's ever heard. From Sinatra, Aretha and Stevie Wonder to Elvis, The Beatles and Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods (who?), she's heard them all. Mariah was blessed to have been born in an era when many of the true greats of music were still around or still heard on the radio so she soaked up quite a bit. No, to say there would be no Mariah without Whitney is a falsehood. You want to be truly realistic, when you think about it, there'd be no female singers today if it weren't for a cavewomen serenading her caveman way way back in the day. Enjoy the day everyone.

Influence/Stevie Nicks (36,481) by RibbonB from USA
Rad Chad, yes Mariah has said that Stevie Wonder and Aretha were her biggest influences and Motown, basically the music her brother played around the house. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it doesn't make it a fact. Saying without Whitney there would be no Mariah is an exaggeration, just as saying that without Amy Winehouse there would be no Adele. It's really not true. People forget Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofill who came before Mariah and Whitney and Sade led the British Soul genre and still does in my opinion. Of course people tried to label Amy and Adele soul, which is erroneous and now there is hardly a mention of that. Both are soulful at times, lol. As for Stevie Nicks, she gets a sideye for jumping in the Idol issue then apologizing. Perhaps she did that to set an example for Nicki to apologize. Funny, but Stevie has been involved with Idol too.

About Whitney Houston (36,480) by CDC from CA
Let's not give too much credit here. Mariah has been writing music and training her voice since she was three. She began writing demo tapes in her early teens. She moved to New York City barely out of high school. All this happened before Whitney released her first album. In the late 90's, Mariah said that she was inspired by Whitney. This was after she met her and became friends. I always thought that their new friendship, by protocol, prompted Mariah to be more complimentary towards Whitney, because when Mariah first burst into the scene, she never really seemed to give a damn about her.

Early influences (36,479) by RadChad from United States
First I will start by saying Mariah, Whitney, and Celine are considered the vocal trinity, meaning that they are all equally the best singers of all times. Ofcourse MC is my personal favorite. Having said that I never felt or saw where Mariah copied Whitney or tried to be like Whitney (and I remember the 80s before Mariah's debut). I've always felt like Mariah had her own authenic thing going as an artist (even Whitney stated that). Now as far as early influences or who she grew up listening to, I would say Aretha Franklin, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, and the Clark Sisters are most likely her biggest influences (the people I've heard her mention as influences earlier on). If anything I could hear Aretha and Minnie's, and maybe some Chaka Khan influences in Mariah's before I hear Whitney. Don't get me wrong, I do see some parallels, very small though, and probably because of the label back then, but MC has made her own mark in music history and she wouldn't have been able to if she was in anyway a copy cat artist.

I do remember reading that Tommy M was looking for the next Whitney. Maybe that's the reason people say that without Whitney there wouldn't be any Mariah. Who knows? Take care mr NYC man.

I didn't spell your name right, because I don't know how. I guess you are talking about me, when you mention Whitney and Rihanna. The Bodyguard went to the cinemas in 1992 and yes, "I will always love you" is a huge hit. Whitney didn't have that many pop or RnB hits after that song. She had more hits before that release. I never said that Rihanna has sold more albums than Mariah, but she has had more number ones than Mariah in the 00's. If you take a quick google search on Rihanna "official charts company" claims that Rihanna has sold 20 million albums (6 million) and singles (14 million) in the UK alone. I don't know if it's true, but I know that Rihanna has been really "big" in most of Europe and USA since she first entered the charts.

Enwar - Without you (36,475) by Sasha from Nomansland
It has exactly the same effect on me. I became a fan because of this song when I was a little girl and although I listened to it a billion time, it still moves me. It's Mariah's magic.

I just heard Without You on the radio, and I literally got chills and goosebumps all over. Amazing how it still had that affect on me almost twenty years later. I love it.

Rihanna is the real deal (36,473) by Davey J from USA
After the first couple of songs that Rihanna came out with, I quickly realized that she had just as much potential as Mariah in terms of radio success. Rihanna has a perfect listenable radio voice. She has dominated radio since 2005, and has put out an album almost every year since, which is something rare in these times. She has always scared me because she does have the ability to have #1 success to the levels of Mariah. I don't get why people here are surprised by where she stands on the pop charts. She has had unprecedented success in the past seven years, much like Mariah in the early's 90's, but mainly on the pop charts. I could rattle off 24 or 25 successful Rihanna singles or songs featuring her. That's a ridiculous amount in 7 years and alot more than Mariah had from 1992-1999 which is the beginning of the chart period in question. After 1999, Mariah has really only had one successful album on the pop charts with TEOM. Rihanna is the real deal and regardless of her public image these days, she still has and is delivering the goods. I think she's refreshing and she certainly has made listening to the radio alot more fun in the past seven years.

Mariah and Whitney (36,472) by Desiree from USA
Mariah has said many times that Whitney did influence her and to make it clear Whitney was the first black women to be signed to a 100 million dollor world wide contract. Whitney was the first black women on MTV. Whitney is in the record book for winning the most music awards in history. So yeah, I stand my ground that without Whitney there can be no Mariah.

Whitney/Mariah/Nattalie (36,471) by Licia from USA
Throughout the years I never really got the comparison. Besides the belting, they have very difference voices. I'm no singer or vocal coach, so I can't describe the differences in technical terms, but I know I hear two different types of voices when I listen to Mariah and Whitney. People got so caught up in this "she's the next Whitney" crap that they never really listened to how different they are as singers. Both of them were/are great within their own lane. Nattalie, I feel you on all that you said lol.

Whitney didn't influence Mariah's music. (36,470) by Edward from USA
I don't recall one instance where Mariah has stated that she was influenced by Whitney Houston. Whitney Houston was a huge phenomenon due to the quality of her music, interpretation, and her voice, and she set the bar very high while paving the way for every female singer who came after her, including Mariah Carey. She has her merit, and we all know there was only one Whitney Houston. Mariah, I think, was more influenced by Minnie Ripperton, hence the whistle register, and thank God for that. The whistle was, I think, what set her apart from Whitney Houston and gave her a place in music. Not only the texture of her voice, but her nuances, melodies, and background vocal layering. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Whitney's voice was stronger than Mariah, but Mariah voice was more versatile. Mariah played more with choruses, melodies and hooks. Whitney could take anybody's song and make it her own as if she had written it herself. I thank God for "When You Believe", but I would've liked to hear them sing a different sung. Probably a song written by Mariah would've done it.

Mariah singing Happy Bday to Sharon Osbourne (36,469) by Stella from Greece
I just watched the video on YouTube (YouTube lol). Mariah looks beautiful and most importantly, sounds terrific. I died at that final ''you'' that she did. She really has a voice like no other's. Sharon looked pretty touched too. Mariah is such a sweet soul.

The charts (36,467) by Nattalie from USA
Bilboard, the music industry and the people, have it all wrong for having Rhianna in the light in general. It just shows where our music has gone. Hot mess. I could have sworn that Michael released his Dangerous album in 1991. Remember The Time anyone? Black Or White? Do I have to say more? I don't know but if all those allegations didn't happen with Mike, many things would be different. Also what about his Invincible album. You Rock My World? Geez. And when it comes to Mariah, if you put her behind someone like Rhianna, you might as well spit on Mariah's catalog and delete it like she never happened. Oh and I forgot about another one of Mike's albums. HIStory anyone? Did the song Scream never exisit either? I guess according to Billboard, none of those albums or songs sold. Whatever.

Pop songs chart (36,466) by enwar00 from usa
This chart is based on airplay only, and only airplay from Top 40 stations, and only from 1992-2012, in case that helps anyone understand how Rihanna is at the top of her list. Pop radio aka Top 40 radio is pretty much Rihanna's home base, same with Britney, P!nk, etc. Mariah would probably be higher if that chart went back to 1990.

Desiree from USA (36,465) by Will from England
Really? I've never viewed Whitney as the person who helped Mariah get to where she is. How has she? Her first album came out in 1985, only 5 years before Mariah came onto the scene. So it's not like she was such a huge influence in Mariah's early life, for her to follow her kind of music. If there wasn't a Whitney, and thank God there was, then I think there would still be a Mariah Carey.
