Re: Easy on me (98,754) (98,755)

Thumbs up, because what Adele manages to now which Mariah used to do, is create a personal, emotionally driven song but keeps it open lyrically so other people can flip it onto their own lives - which is part of the enduring appeal of Adele, the gp know that they can go to her for the heart-wrenching lyrics or the sassy kiss-off ones. Mariah used to be perfect at that (Close My Eyes, Outside, Bye Bye being the real last open ended song), and yet her work now is more centred and focused on her life that it makes it difficult to relate to - am I wrong in saying this? And yes, she had a formula in the 90s, dropped it, found a new one with WBT and tried to replicate it many times until Caution, which truly seemed to be more growth from her. Also, I get the feeling that sometimes Mariah overthinks the song and over complicates it with too much going on (In The Mix, Infinity, Save The Day, Runway), whilst Adele's latest offering is straight forward and delivers what it is supposed to, whilst throwing in some vocal gymnastics - following the same formula since she knows that's what works well for her. I would not be surprised that once 30 has been finished with, her next lead single is an uptempo one like RITD. Caution was a step in the right direction for Mariah, and I hope she continues down this route, but learnt that using a lead single as a ballad isn't the right move for her right now.

If Mariah had released Easy On Me, certainly the members of this board would have gone wild, of this much I am sure. The world wants Adele again. In fact, it's craving her. Do we have to insult current pop artists to make this acceptable? Must we label her "formulaic" to dismiss her and feel better about missing old-school Mariah?
Most artists stay the same. They go with trends, they harmonise a little differently, they jump on producers of the day but they keep their fan base. Mariah didn't. There's no fan base. I question the motives of fans here who attack Adele.
Yes it sounds similar but the "meaning" of her song is new. Remember when Mariah had to defend herself against attacks about sounding "samey" with Heartbreaker with the idea of "formula"? "I have a formula" she said. Didn't she just. It worked. And she ditched it.
Mariah was great but became a punch line. With a Christmas hat, no less. Don't hate Adele for surfing her own tidal wave. After many years out and no scandals and a private life she's still the buzz.
Perhaps she's what Mariah could have done. Not taking away from Mariah's achievements and shout out to Adele for that hilarious clip at the O2 where she found your Mariah was there the day before, but come on.
Honestly: and speak honestly: if Mariah had released this song, would you thumbs up? Or thumbs down?

And isn't ironic, don't you think? (98,753)

Mariah could've made a great song to add to her "#1's" album yet she accompanied her greatest hits with such a piece of crap like Infinity. For me, "#1 to Infinity" doesn't exist. She did the same with "The Rarities", so many gems, but the best she could come up with was "Save The Day". I'm sorry, but as boring and samey as some of you might think "Easy On Me" is, I would prefer a song like it any day over those two. Being a fan hasn't made blind to crap. "Right to Dream", "Help Me Make it", "Almost Home", I crave the quality of her music in those songs. But maybe that's too saccharine for her.

I love "Easy On Me", Adele has a very unique and soulful voice. It is not a power ballad a la "Hello", but it has its beautiful vocal moments that makes you feel connect to what she's singing. She doesn't have to change her formula if it's working great for her, she's making the music she likes instead of following trends that would get her fanbase scattered long term. I love the fact she doesn't rely on anything other than her voice, instrumentation and songwriting. Her being fat or thin doesn't matter. I liked her music but wasn't a fan until "Hello" and its corresponding album. I like when Mariah makes an effort and allow some sort of input. "Almost Home" was one of the her best side projects that captured 90's Mariah perfectly. It was so Mariah, that most of us couldn't believe she didn't write it. I don't care if Mariah disappears for a few years as long as she comes back with some well cook music. Hopeful this new Christmas song is not another "The Planet'. She's been working on it for quite sometime, hopefully she'll deliver.

"How come a generic piano ballade, quintessential Adele song, with nothing new to offer, get so much praise?" Great post, completely agree. I think you have answered it already. They praise it because 95 % of today's music is sh..., bubblegum at its worst. So this new Adele song sounds indeed like all her others. Nothing special. I like Adele, I have two albums of hers, but I won't buy another one. But there's one thing Adele has an advantage, she has a good image right. No scandals, no diva behavior, there are people outside who prefer that kind of image. I give a thumb up for the classic video. That's rare today too.

Easy on me does make you feel all fuzzy inside with each listen. I would love to hear an Adele and MC duet. Radio would love it. But anyway, MC will get her praise and moment in two weeks when she announces "It's time." Surely we will have a new Christmas single and a MC 30 announcement too.

Honestly, I worry about this quite often, but she doesn't seem to mind at all. Haha. Just another title to her already long list of titles, but with such a big flex - "the queen of Christmas".

Absolutely. And I don't care what teens think about Mariah. Every adult knows her and not because of AIWFCIY. They know her because of her 90ies hits and also because she's one of the diva trinity with Whitney and Celine.

Easy on me (98,744)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|

My all time favourite artist of all time is, obviously, Mariah, but I love Celine, Whitney, Anita Baker, Nina Simone, Chaka Kahn, all the "big voiced"-ladies. The only one who can be compared to these ladies the last decade, looking at you Ariana, is Adele. She doesen't have the register, but her voice is sublime and so soulful. I was really looking forward to "Easy on me".
"Easy on me" has, at least what I have read, got universal acclaim from music critics. And I have to admit, it is a solid song, quality, easy to listen to, true Adele, not at all what music sounds like generally today. But let us be real, I can't say if this was released from her debut album, 19, her sophomore album, 21, her third album, 25, or her latest album, 30. "Easy on me" is like all Adele songs blended together.
In reviews of Mariah's "Don't Forget About Us", critics talked about Mariah hitting a creative wall, the song was too similar to WBT, too similar to everything she has done. I just can't understand why most critics are not making the same point about Adele's latest effort. Adele has clearly hit a creative wall, the song is boring, nothing new, no excitement, no bravoure, it's just Adele. I'm really disappointed. I have listened to "Easy on me" two times, and I think it will be the only two times I will ever listen to the song.
I wonder, why are music critics, and the general public alike, so crazy about this song? Is it because music these days is just manufactured mainstream bubble gum pop/rnb from Ariana, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, that an old school jam from Adele is all the world needs to just praise her as a genius?
How come a generic piano ballade, quintessential Adele song, with nothing new to offer, get so much praise?

Guys, let's not be crazy. What other artist could be as successful as Mariah? She has a Christmas number one? Yes but she also has another 18 non Christmas mega hits and so many other hit songs. At this point it is just crazy to say she is only noticed on Christmas.

For some reason it does not bother me. She has achieved more than many people can claim, regardless of field of work. Adding a Christmas act is another big achievement. She broke into the industry when Adele was barely 2 years old. Let's give her a break.

Mariah a Christmas act (98,739)
by T from USA

Is anyone else slightly concerned that the younger generation of music consumers are only going to perceive Mariah to be a Christmas act? I can imagine the marketing behind this special will be as big as last years, and since 2019 it seems that she's really only visible music wise at Christmas time. An album like Caution didn't even get the attention it so deserved, maybe people really only check for her after Thanksgiving.

This was one "The Voice" got right, and the show seemed to get a lot of credibility as she was seemingly taking off and then not. I only heard of her when she had passed, it's so sad. This girl could've been a massive big star by now. I come back to her audition ever so often.

Oh yes, I still have videos from the VH1 specials too. They were all great, you're right there must have worked a lamb at that time. It was really a cool time and you could only love Mariah and her music. So fresh, so sweet, so adoreable, I will never forget that time. I esteem those memories.

That [era] is when I became a die hard lamb. Haha. I had a "When You Believe" cassette tape and used to record music videos on VHS and anytime Mariah came on even if the song was almost through I'd hit record without fail. Oh and how VH1 loved Mariah Carey, I bet there was a lamb working there at the time. Where did time go?

And it's crazy how every producer she collaborates with manages to capture that signature sound. I hope she recorded some more songs with Trackmasters. They had that hard hip hop sound that was pleasing to the ears. I guess that's why MC liked them so much. The Rarities 2 should be interesting and put a smile on our faces.

"Crazy how Mariah's sound is instantly recognizable even when she isn't singing." Yes Terna, it's so true. That's her unique MC style that I love so much from day one. Songs from the vault 97-98 are really needed. There must be hidden gems from that era.

This is so random, for you to mention them out of the blue as I have been playing and singing "Last Chance" the greater part of this month randomly, that song is written and sung beautifully. I once played it for a die hard Céline Dion fan friend of mine and he went "It sounds so Mariah, It's near perfect." Lol. Crazy how Mariah's sound is instantly recognizable even when she isn't singing, her sense of melodies and what works musically is 2nd to none. If there's a version of hers in the vault I hope she releases it together with other songs recorded during that time period - '97/98 that era wasn't represented on the first rarities.
