Re: Why I want another #1 (100,360) (100,361) by jaker20 from US
I feel like her next hit will be from a soundtrack, like "Love Me Like You Do" type of song, one that's not an r&b, but something that's more current. Again, similar to how Cher pulled it off, because "Believe" was completely different from the rest of her discography, but was of its time.

Sorry about that. What's happening is Netherlands? That's next level poor taste.

I could not agree more. Another #1 will make a lot of positive difference on Mariah's status as an artist. If Cher was able to pull it off, I still believe (singing) that she can do it too or even better. Based on her history, whenever she makes a "comeback" she scores at least a couple of #1's. All she need to do is to record and release that major pop R&B album with massive pop R&B hits that is relatable, not only to her older (sorry but true, including myself) fans, but more importantly, to the untapped younger music enthusiast. And also right timing of release is crucial. Hopefully, it happens this year because she's 52 or 53 already!

Here in the Netherlands, listeners can each year vote for their favorite songs. Between Christmas and New Year, the top 2000 songs get played on the radio. So this list is a great tool to see who is popular in the Netherlands. Since we are comparing artists of Mariah's caliber, I counted the number of songs artists like Madonna, Celine, Barbra etc have on this list.

Barbra Streisand has 6 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "Woman in love" at no 1126. Aretha Franklin has 5 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "Respect" at no 446. Whitney Houston has 5 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "I will always love you" at no 714. Madonna has 5 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "Like a prayer" at no 916. Taylor Swift has 4 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "All too well" at no 1282. Celine Dion had 3 songs on the list, the highest charted song is "It's all coming back to me now" at no 1337. Mariah has only 1 song on the list, "All I want for Christmas is you" is at no 879. Janet Jackson has not a single song on the list.

So Mariah is only loved for one song here in the Netherlands and it is that awful Christmas song. Male singers are way more popular than female singers. Bruce Springsteen (23 songs), Michael Jackson (20 songs), George Michael (17 songs), Elvis Presley (15 songs) and Prince (12 songs) all have more songs on the list than Barbra Streisand.

It's silly to claim Mariah Carey isn't respected. But we should probably clarify who we're looking for respect from. 15 year olds? You can't respect what you don't know. The Grammys? At this point, we should reverse the question and ask who respects the Grammys? Ultimately, the only group Mariah or any artist would want respect and validation from is her peers. Fellow artists and musicians in her genre who know what it takes to be in this industry. On that score, I think it's safe to say she's well respected and admired. As for the whole classy argument, we need to be careful with that word. Especially when we start saying things like she became less classy when her music changed. She may have lost some fans going from adult contemporary to hip-hop and R&B, but she gained plenty of new ones with the change as well. And all the young kids are into rap nowadays, so who's classy? As for her diva attitude, if using a treadmill in silk neglige and six inch Gucci stilettos while hitting whistles and sipping a glass of crystal pinky out isn't classy, then I don't know what is dahling.

"How does Taylor Swift have twice as many Grammys as MC?" The same way Beyonce is the most awarded female in the music industry - industry politics, so don't think too much about that. Certain artists tend not (all caps) to play by the rules that "the powers that be" enforce in the music industry, Mariah is high on that list. The late Prince also known as "The artist" is also on that list. Everything they accomplished was because they are musical geniuses first of all (the genuine gift of being able to create music) but also worked hard for, almost like it was an uphill battle. I have utmost respect for Mariah and Prince and the likes who played on their own terms, ended up owing their catalogues (this is very important as an artist) and yet remained relevant. Mariah is a very calculated and sharp business mind, who has thrived in a cutthroat industry and carved out her own lane. She is where a lot of artists can only wish they were. The respect is already here and so will that 20th number one, trust and believe.

Hello (100,351) by SM from Citizen of the World
Hello. I just wanted to take a second and introduce myself, I have posted here numerous times randomly and realized I never properly introduced myself to the lambs. I'm Daniel, live in Boston and I have been a lamb since 1990, when I was 5. My grandmother was the first person who played Mariah's debut cassette tape for me and since that day I followed Mariah and she has always been a part of my life. I'm gonna keep this short and sweet but Mariah has saved my life not once but one too many to count with her music, voice and who she is as a person. She is always there for me. I have looked up to her my whole life, she is my inspiration and I am so grateful for such a beautiful and talented women to shine for me. Everyday that goes on I thank God for her and her music because if it wasn't for Mariah, I really don't know where I would be. But anyways if any lambs ever want to chat about Mariah I am so down to making new friends my email is dvogz10@icloud.com and my twitter is @DanielkennethV.

Sooooo. A true #1 hit song by Mariah (without all of the record label politics) is one that no one sees coming. Not even her diehard fans. No one could have predicted (even Mariah herself) that "Vision of Love" was going to a #1 splash. No one could see "We Belong Together" becoming the monster hit that it became. And even though we all knew that "All I Want for Christmas is You" was her "shoulda been #1" song, no one could have foreseen the mega-success and eventual #1 chart topper it would eventually accomplished. As true Mariah Carey fans, we all know that she is a musical marvel, and if she plays her melodic & lyrical cards just right, that #1 moment will happen again. It can't be forced, though. Her #1 magic will happen when it happens.

Mimi just has to put the Diva personality aside and just be herself. She's so funny and smart, it's ridiculous. The general public doesn't get to see her silly fun side that us hard core fans get to see. She's just gotta put everything aside, focus on music and deliver a good quality album. We need another first single like Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, Loverboy, It's like That, Touch My Body or Obsesed. A great summer song that blends what we love most about these songs, but somehow original, like only Mimi knows how to. As long as she keeps making music, I'll keep supporting her. By the way, my favorite album is also Butterfly, duh, and my favorite song is Always Be My Baby.

I actually disagree a bit. When I talk to people from the ages of 16-25, who only know Mariah as an Christmas act, and maybe a song or two besides AIWFCIY (and they absolutly love that song), I have learned that Madonna is being considered toxic, Celine is respected, but considered boring, Whitney Houston is loved, but they know nothing about her, Janet is forgotten, Barbra has nobody heard of, and Diana Ross is some old diva they think is dead. When I tell them I love Mariah and listen to her a lot, they just say "cool". She is actually respected here in Norway by the younger generation, but it is mostly based on AIWFIY's success. Besides, Mariah is always classy during Christmas time, and that is what they know.

Remember guys, we are really biased on this board, because we have followed Mariah's footsteps from the beginning, we know everything she has done, not even the casual Mariah fans have the knowledge we have, so our perception of Mariah is coloured by our knowledge. The new generation, here in Norway at least, see Mariah as a fun, classy and joyful Christmas act, with an occasional rnb song here and there. The most popular Mariah songs in Norway, besides her Christmas hit, are Love Takes Time, I'll Be There, When You Believe, Without You and Hero, nothing unclassy about those songs.

Great post, Nikki. I agree in all respects. The same could be said about Diana Ross, at least post-Motown (just like for Mariah post-Sony). These ladies just didn't want to play ball.

I'd add "We're Not Making Love Anymore" with Michael Bolton. Also, the original Dave Hall remix of Dreamlover has always been available (both at the time of release and on the MC30 EP); it was re-titled the "Bam Jam Soul".

Re: Big Energy (100,313) (100,340) by Nikki from usa
You're not wrong. It's just that's not the only thing important to her when it comes to music. Mariah didn't allow OS to be streamed or accounted for on charts. So, she wasn't doing that for a hit. I think people forget there's not much money in music anymore and Mariah knows she's not going to get much help from her label in terms of promotion. She's been using her music as promo for other money making ventures instead. Fantasy being in the movie Free Guy and in BE has certainly given the track new life. It was a valiant effort, but I don't see it hitting #1. I do think it's possible for one of Mariah's old tracks to hit the top spot, or an old track sung in a new way. 90's is retro right now, so she has a shot.

Re: Why I want another #1 (100,326) (100,339) by Nikki from usa
We could address some elephants in the room. Celine, Madonna, Barbra, and Taylor are white. They also reflect consistency. They stay in their musical lane and to the script of the image they cultivated. Mariah's genre hopped in music and in style. The 2 biggest things is really behind the scenes and promotion. Mariah really doesn't try to control her own narrative or be seen. That's the only reason J.Lo has a career right now. Celine plays ball with the industry. The Grammys always want female artists to cover male rock songs. Dion played ball and won a major category shortly after. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande didn't and she let the cat out of the bag that they wouldn't let her perform unless she did another dude's track. Mariah doesn't play ball. She did have the biggest success of '05, yet wasn't allowed to accept a single award on stage during the live broadcast. That had nothing to do with her clothing apparel. I do see a lot of respect for Mariah these days, just not from these old organizations. I think she'd do well to toot her own horn a little and be present in the public eye. She'd go a lot further. She needs her own platform.
