Concert in Saudi Arabia (101,543)

What are you talking about? "Vision of Love" sounds just as good as it did in 1990. There's nothing wrong with Mariah's voice. She sounds amazing. Yas queen.

Because I'm an MC fan a lot of things come across my social media. She is struggling through this performance. She needs to give Vision of Love a rest.

Totally against "vocal resting" (101,542)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Sorry for my bad English, I read my last post and I hope you understood it because it has many mistakes. One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm totally against the "vocal testing" thing. Maybe it works for Mariah, or maybe she thinks that it works for her. Vocal chords are muscles. If you don't train them on a regular basis they oxidize.
Some people, like Mariah and Whitney, were born with an unique gift. Maybe Mariah thinks it's enough to do some vocal resting before her shows and pray to God and put humidifiers around her. But as any musician, if she wants to stay in the business of selling concert tickets with her voice being the center of attention, she has to practice every week. Practice scales and arpeggios to maintain fluidity and agility. Maybe she has a vocal coach but I think that not a single teacher or vocal coach would recommend to go and sing songs like My All if you sound as uncomfortable and forced as Mariah did in this last concert. And it happens to her many many times.
I'll just share this article I found from St. Olaf Collage that illustrates this point very good: "What about resting the voice when there's a problem, such as vocal nodules? Medical opinion on this has changed over the years; you can search online and find every possible recommendation. In the early days of voice care, when there was a problem with the voice, doctors would often prescribe complete silence for a month or more. That might have worked for people with servants and no children, but it is no longer considered realistic or necessary in most cases. Extended silence can even lead to a fear that the voice will 'break' when speech resumes." Sounds familiar?

The future (101,541)
by MC1989 from Spain

Mariah still has a powerful rich and beautiful tone, a gifted tone actually. She still sounds very good and on pitch in her low and mid range. But she can't barely belt nowadays. The same happens when she has to reach high notes, the same when she goes for whistelings - most of the times they sound unpleasing, the same when she tries to imitate her old runs and riffs. There are some nice attempts here and there and as I say she still can perform live, but not the way she did in Saudi Arabia. It was painful to watch as a longtime fan. I think that everyone who goes on a stage has to be comfortable in every part of the song. Not trying to go for notes or parts that are out of your range. If you watch her performance of I'll Be There in that concert, she starts so good, but when it comes to the belting parts and the more difficult parts she's unable to reach and sound good.
At this point, someone, if not she, should admit the problem, and readapt each and every song, but not only lowering them. But reinventing them. Invent other turns, other bridges, rearrange those classics if you still want to sing them. Some greatest singers have lost tons of voice, it happened to Elton John in the 80's and many others, but they rearranged and adapted their repertoire to their current abilities. But you know what? That takes some work, hours of thinking, trying with your musicians, rehearsing etc, and first, admitting that you can't sing like you did in the first 2 decades of your career. I guess Mariah is a bit lazy these days, it's easier for her to lay on playbacks and prerecorded climaxes that most of the times are predictable and cringy to watch. At least Celine or others lip synch so well those climaxes that you don't even care. But we all know Mariah lip synchs bad. So why sing a song where she sounds uncomfortable, unpleasant, shouty, off key at times? The thing is that they are always going to compare to her prime. So if she doesn't want to quit the classics from her repertoire, at least she has to sing them live, and decent.
So my point is, if you want to still sing VOL, Hero, Fantasy, My All etc, rearrange those damn songs to a point you are absolute comfortable and where you don't have to depend on how your throte woke up that day. And she should visit a vocal coach, but she's Mariah Carey, you know, she doesn't need to re-learn how to use better her voice. As much as I adore Mariah, her diva ego works against her sometimes.
The other option is leave those songs out. Sing jazz, slow songs that aren't so demanding, like when she sings Lullaby Of Birdland. I want to see her comfortable because she still has a beautiful gifted instrument. But it's a fragile one. And nowadays the bad or mediocre performances are becoming the majority. That's the unnormal. When you're a singer you have bad days, bad performances. But they should be the minority of them if that's what you do for loving. But we all know Mariah doesn't need that for living anymore. So why losing her time on facing the situation and only sing 100% live even if that means to totally change and rearrange her catalogue? Because as someone said, I'm fearing another disaster like NYE or an epic playback with full media coverage.
The third option is retirement from stages and big venues and live concerts. She will be loved forever. She can do music in the studio, publish another memoir, or whatever she wants cause she's a legend like no other.
I hope she gets better for the December shows. I love Mariah and I love many of her recent performances at home, or some during the Caution tour etc. But this Saudi Arabia concert was Mariah at her worst vocally speaking. She's lucky that the media didn't criticize this performance but if that happens on a TV performance or on the Madison Square Garden she will receive a lot of backlash. And what I want, is her to succeed.

Yes, it seems so. It's somehow sad. I'm okay with the perfume (I own two) and Pepsi was cool for example (nice commercial) but the other things are not needed. Well, one don't have to understand and like everything.

Quite. I can put my hand on my heart and say that I could have sang better than Mariah did. Honestly. That is what is really worrying. Someone whose voice was completely untouchable, and as Tommy said when he discovered her, "she is the best singer I have ever heard", to actually being one of the worst singers still performing, is almost incredible. It's so sad to witness. She can live off AIWFCIY's annual royalties, so why does she need the "money grab"? Retire from singing and write songs for others and focus on your other projects. The dolls have stopped dancing now.

Well, just like they pushed poor Whitney into embarrassment by encouraging her into touring when she wasn't ready, Marian also has her "yass queen" sycophants and some delusional fans that wouldn't give to fs about her as long as they get a glimpse of her. The thing is now with cellphones it is impossible to keep any concert/performance isolated.

I think Mariah does it for the money grab. She has proven time and time again to always get the money. Record deals that were ill advised to constant touring all throughout the year. I guess once poor, it always affects your choices in life. She really is doing a disservice to her legacy by the terrible performances. Makes my throat hurt just watching her struggle. She sounds like a completely different artist that what she sold the public. She'll never address the core issue with the public so might as well collect the money bags so her kids can live in opulence.

I've seen most of the clips. My All was particularly bad as she lipped the chorus and, of course, carried on miming when they playback stopped and had to awkwardly start singing. It was an embarrassment, and a disaster. None of Mariah's peers or anyone of her status would have done such a performance. Frankly I don't really know why she bothers. She has her money, she has her legacy, she has her records. Why put herself, and us, through these dreadful performances time and time again.

To me the AIWFCIY performance in the freezing cold and the NYE performance even sounded better. Well, we'll always have the music.

Staying out of the singing debate, I'm just writing to say I wish Mariah could/would bring her late father's restored Porsche to Limerock. It could be on display at their vintage festival in late August. It would honor her time going there with her dad. Many of us have similar memories there with our dads. I wish my dad's MGB looked as great as her dad's convertible.

I've noticed when Mariah has any form of decent voice back, she instantly goes at it 120% to use every facet of it and damage it even further. With TEOM, she belted like there was no tomorrow, resulting in the more restrained vocals on E=MC2 and Memoirs. Then post pregnancy when she had brilliant fluidity, tone and range, she again went to the max with her voice and undid all the rest (and lack of alcohol) that had helped her. And now, when she says her voice is back to a decent level, she uses every part of it in recording sessions (WBT Valentine Mix and The Roof with Brandy, plus all the other singing projects she has on the go) which ends up becoming lack luster vocal moments live on stage. I love Mariah, but she has missed several great opportunities to learn how to extend those moments where her voice was in great shape and preserve it. And that bloody corset isn't helping matters, she needs to find new ways to dress so that she doesn't have to worry about her weight on stage and maintaining the 8 figure.

MC has lost singing from note to note with ease and effortlessly. Her notes are forced now because air is not flowing through her vocal cords freely. That's the best that I can explain it. This performance is hard to watch again. I am really worried now about any future studio recordings. Until then, I will play her 1990 VOL Grammys performance instead.

I'm 100% with you on this Robert, I listen to MCIIY three times more then Merry Christmas during the holiday season. It's an amazing album to put on for hosting events at home, so updeat and fun. I love the lush orchestra. I remember when she first released MCIIY that she said it is Christmas in the city verses Merry Christmas is Christmas in the country.
