Re: Hero (99,850) (99,852)
by Edward from USA

How dare you having an opinion? I do agree that, lyricwise, "Through the Train" is far superior than "Hero", but I do prefer "Hero". As Terna stated, sometimes less is more, and while "Hero" is kind of generic, its message connected to people and Mariah's delivery was simply flawless. The performance of the song that was used as the video for it, in which Mariah looked like a goddess, represents the Mariah I fell for and the version I also love most. I have to admit though Hero is a song I very rarely listen to, but I do love what it represents in Mariah's career, it definitely was her signature song until AIWFCIY replaced it.

Mariah has the creative advantage to write songs singular and unique to her voice, like GML and to write a more generic Hero. I appreciate both for her. I actually wish she would write more songs that many could sing. That's often the sign of a standard, or one in the making. In these "panoramic" times, she could really work on her song crafting. Hero and All I Want are her only true standards IMO. I've always imagined her recording songs from the American songbook or so called standards, but imagine if she comes out of the pandemic with a recorded version of her own, old and new.

Hero (99,850)

I don't care for Hero. That fact doesn't mean anything about me as a fan or as a human being. Some of you take all of this a little too far. Insulting each other over opinions and making blanket judgments about people over their preferences. Is this entertainment for you all or a courthouse? For me, Hero is generic. Through The Rain is better. The lines "and every time I feel afraid I hold tighter to my faith" and "and when the wind blows and shadows grow close" are better than anything written in Hero. Wait am I now to be sentenced to a firing squad for that opinion? Real problems in the world folks. Get a grip and show everyone love.

Hero (99,849)
by Terna from Nigeria

As the saying goes, "sometimes less is [more]". "Hero" embodies this saying and its impact is undeniable. [It's] a simple song, sung in an easy to sing along key, void of all the extra background vocal parts Mariah ballads tend to have and it works. It is her signature song, well at least one of them, and just one of those songs people tend to know word for word, like a hymn sung generation after generation. It really is a special song and for me what made me a fan. I gravitate towards the version I heard first, the [Proctors Theatre] version and I'm still amazed years later.

Hero discussion moment (99,847)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Caveat: This board has been sedative, and I want to have a friendly discussion, so please read my post as such. Hero annoys me as a MC fan, I've made that clear over my posts. However I one thousand percent understand why people connect and love the song. I'll speak as someone who planed their pee breaks at the five Mariah Carey concerts I've been too, to line up with when she sung Hero. For me Hero reeks of, "it could have been Celine Dion", "it could have been Deborah Cox", it could have been Gloria Estefan (wink wink). It's so far from what makes Mariah unique as an artist, so far from signature Mariah's invented genre. Can it give me chills, absolutely. That's no question, it's a stunningly executed song. That voice, that upswing, that passion. Is it Mariah creatively liberated, no. Hero could be sung and has been sung by so many. Something like Giving Me Life, or Babydoll can only be executed my Mimi.

Billboard cover - That's Iconic (99,846)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I don't know what to say about the Billboard cover. Mariah absolutely deserves to be Billboards cover girl for this series of legendary women in music, however, whoever that is on the cover of Billboard... I don't know her. Billboard should have hired Thatsiconic.com to do the cover. I have That's Iconic's Mariah Carey Visual Compendium (horizontal print) and his art is stunning. simply gorgeous and well executed and understood. I thought the Christina Billboard cover was Gaga at first sight. The artist of these covers doesn't capture the essence of the artist. It's that simple. I'd prefer they had used the cartoon version of Mariah from the Heartbreaker video (which is still the most legit cartoon version of Mariah to date).

I love Hero. It's the first song of hers I heard. I had my back to the TV, as the story goes, and slowly turned around as she began to sing, "There's a hero." I will never trash the song. Ever. It's the song that made me a fan. Shame on those who do.

I'm not certain that one can fully experience the effect of "Hero" without having faced extraordinary adversity or challenges in your own personal life. Fortunately, most people don't always experience such things. When I listened to the song during college in 1993, when it first came out, I always perceived it as only being about self-belief. But as I aged and life changed for me and those I cared about, I came to hear the song differently. After seeing my mother battle and persist with parkinsonism and dementia and how my family and I adopted a way of life to support and care for her at home, rather than in a nursing home, I heard the words as an outward validation of what my family and I have been experiencing and living for many years now in an unnoticed and unrecognized way for the everyday amazing things we do and accomplish together. That validation can bring you to tears when you recognize those heroics within yourself and your own life and feel somehow seen and supported. Perhaps down those kinds of roads in life, the song gains its most important and meaningful audience.

I will introduce the new generation to Butterfly which is arguably her best 90s album. Right now the new generations memory can only go back as far as TEOM. So this way she can shed light on Butterfly and pump some streams into it.

This is what I am thinking so far for the tracklisting: 1. Honey ft. Yung Bleu and Gunna 2. Butterfly ft. Ariana Grande 3. My All ft. The Clark Sisters - inspiration from Kanye's Sunday Church version that MC loved on Twitter 4. Babydoll ft. Brandy 5. Whenever You Call ft. Maxwell 6. Beautiful Ones ft. The Weekend 7. Close My Eyes - acoustic version Plus four new tracks for Lambs.

Article: The number ones: Mariah Carey's "Hero" (99,839)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
It really annoys me how many people trash talk Hero these days. I know it's "cool" to not like it, especially ever since Mariah shocked us all by proclaiming that she never liked the song. Of course, whatever Mariah says, the lambs do.
What irks me, is before Mariah made that announcement during her concert, Hero was always well received by the fans. There was no reference to it being "too schmaltzy" or "too middle of the road" like everyone always says these days. Until AIWFCIY stole its crown, Hero was Mariah's signature tune. It was her "I Will Always Live You" and her "My Heart Will Go On", and everyone seemed fine with that. It was always receiving airplay on the radio, it was from her best-selling album (and probably significantly helped those album sales), it had a positive, universal message, and Mariah said no other song of hers ever got such a response from her fans in respect of the letters she used to get about it.
Mariah even said the song is for her fans, and yet here we all are throwing it back in her face, because it's the in-thing to not like it anymore? I reckon everybody here is a closet Hero fan, and it introduced many people to Mariah's music.
The song is expertly crafted, wonderfully written, and beautifully sung. I for one will always stand by the song, even when no one else will.

Edward, you jumped into my post, not vice versa. Which is something you have a habit of doing because your [sic] desperate for attention and love to spread negativity. There is a difference between calling you out on your bs and attacking you. I never attacked you or called you names yet you are accusing me of smoking crack. Since you want to accuse me of attacking you, how about this. Come for me again and I have more for you. Giving one's opinion and being intentionally shady or two different things. Oh and that's just my opinion, so you shouldn't get your little feelings hurt. Boop. Lol.

I am with you. But it does go with what she said on Twitter Spaces - "It's more than just The Roof." I guess the move to Atlanta was to secure some Atlanta producers like London On Da Track, Mike Will Made It, D'Mile, Polow Da Don, and The Stereotypes to give Butterfly the Atlanta sound vs. the New York sound from 1997. I just want to finally have a Timbaland production on Babydoll. Only time will tell what happens on September 16, 2022.
