Re: Songwriters speech (100,501) (100,505) by T from USA
I think it's becoming apparent why Tommy controlled her so heavily. He didn't do it with Thalia. Of course their personalities clashed. But he had to go overboard to reign her in unfortunately. As one gets older their mental health issues get worse as well. She was probably a lot more manageable in her twenties. We were fortunate to get the work she did all those years because I don't see a lot coming out in the future. I mean, if she was completely healthy I'm sure we would've gotten at least an album every two years all through this decade. That's just who she is, a hard worker. But there is a lot stopping her from completing anything now. I still wish she would just stick to her plans and release something, whether it be SUD, or BL or even her version of Where Are You Christmas.

So, in the same breath as saying I shouldn't be critical of Mariah because of her mental health issues, you then ask me what is my excuse? Quite hypocritical, and laughable at the same time. Several people have already made the point. She needs to get herself together. This isn't new. She's been diagnosed since 2001. It's such a huge moment for her. I just think people felt let down. With all that being said, I do take your point over mental health. And about perhaps being more respectful. Something we could all learn by the looks of it.

Randy. I'm happy that you were strong enough to get yourself through alcoholism and mental illness. Not everyone is that strong. When you were at your very bottom of your addiction and your illness, would it have helped having a bunch of people judge you and tell you that you know better. Or would someone with a kind and open heart offering to pray for you and giving you words of motivation and encouragement a better solution. Would it had helped if everyone gave up on you because "you knew better?" It's obvious that you surround yourself with negative people and your heartless post is proof of that. A "friend" gleefully sending you a video of someone in a very bad place sounds like toxic energy I would never have around me in this day in age. I protect my peace. Had I been as petty and childish as that Beyoncé fan, I would have sent all of Billboards top ten listings since 2006 because she's been missing the list since her sophomore album. Someone put her on the back of a milk carton. And to bring up who you know is still on here, but playing dumb to cover for him. No one's convinced. I would never align myself with someone who asks the poster that gave Mariah his grandmothers diamond necklace for their e-mail only to reveal a private interaction between them on this board when it's obvious that kid had mental health issues just to embarrass him and for likes. That's gotta be a new kind of low. Nope, I'm not interested in kicking anyone when their [sic] down. And I refuse to align myself with toxic people. I refuse to go backwards and surround myself with people who live on a low frequency and find joy seeing others in a low point in their life.

Stacey. When I look in the mirror I look great love. So your read fell flat. More importantly, I have compassion inside seeing someone on a stage who is obviously in a very bad place. The last time she had gained this much weight, disheveled, and displayed a mixture of alcohol and pills was that stupid tour she had to do since MIAM flopped so that the record company could recoup the money they invested in financing that project. I was positive we were going to lose her then. Then again during her Stella years. I don't put this lady on a pedestal nor do I crucify her poor choices. I pray for her. That God helps her find the strength that she has written about from her faith to pull through, because, one day, she will succumb to her vices, and not be with us anymore. I would hate to see that happen to someone whose lyrics brought so much joy and strength to get me through some dark times. Times I'm glad I spent dealing with alone without judgement from the righteous. God bless you.

Edward really? Now a medical diagnosis is an excuse. How about praying for her? How about saying, something is seriously wrong here. How about alcoholism and mixing it with meds is a recipe for disaster. How about, she's backsliding into dangerous territory when she was managed by Crustella. Every grown adult knows better. Yet, we lose people everyday to alcoholism, mental illness, and mixing pills with alcohol. I pray that Mariah gets clean. That she goes to rehab and goes back to her Bible studies and stays true to what she learned when she took her intensive courses and God made the impossible happen and blessed her with a second run at the top in 2005. Something is not right. Instead of judging her, I'm going to pray for her. I don't know her at all and it's obvious she is far from the watered down image Sony sold us. I would hate to wake up tomorrow reading that the lady whose music brought me so much joy died succumbing to addiction. Michael, Whitney, Prince. It's sad that losing "stars" to their addiction is so common. If I was in the throws of addiction. I would hate to have any judgmental people around. Thank God I have a family firm in the faith that would use all their spiritual armor to pray to God that I pull out of it.

I had a very close family member with mental health issues. She went back and forth for years taking her meds. It was a horrible battle and we had to get involved many times. Not everyone is strong enough to do it on their own. Many people relapse. Many people don't make it. It's painful to see her like that. But y'all crucify the lady. She's 50, way past her prime and is still among us. Michael, Prince, and Whitney all died succumbing to their substance abuse. If the same happens to her, you all going to come here and bash her, saying she deserves it. I don't hear any of their fans bashing them for their life choices or their flaws. These artists are human, not God. Lambs are the only ones critical of this lady, wishing for comebacks that are not going to happen. Instead of bashing her, why not pray for her. All I see is judgement. "She has all this money, all these resources." Rich people are some of the saddest people in the world. Money doesn't solve everything, but God can. Not a single prayer for this lady. If she passes an untimely death, please keep your crocodile tears. God, not money, is the answer. Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge, or you will be judged." Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness and all these things shall be added on to you."

We're all entitled to our opinions and here is mine: she looked happy, nervous and truly touched by the award, which honored a lifetime of her work. It was well deserved, and we will never know what it is like to be honored for baring your soul, essentially wearing your heart on your sleeve for the public to see and, ultimately to welcome and adore. So I say bravo. We (your fans) love you, are proud of you and are so happy you brought all of us so much joy through the years, but most of all we are happy for you. Congratulations!

Re: Songwriters speech (100,491) (100,498) by Stacey from USA
Agreed. My now 13 year old daughter started exhibiting anxiety behaviors a year ago. She scratched up her legs. I knew given my family history that she needed help. She's been on a medication for six months and her scars are healing. I got her help. Why can't Mariah do the same?

Some of you need to be real careful who you call heartless or a troll simply because you don't like what we are saying. Mariah is an adult. She should know better than to mix meds with alcohol, especially mental illness meds. Stop making excuses. At some point you will run out of excuses. The only thing left will be the mirror you look at.

There is nothing wrong with being a legacy act, it signifies that you've actually accomplished something worthwhile to fall back on. I think that's what L.A. Reid meant for her when she resigned with Sony in 2015. However she wasn't ready for that yet and decided that she wanted to make a current sounding album. Which she did under [Roc Nation] in 2018. Maybe the sales for Caution woke her up into realizing that. I'm just wondering why she didn't pull out all the stops like the old Mariah and fight to get Caution heard. If only to prove all the naysayers wrong. She did give up on it quite fast and thus resulted in her being seen like a legacy artist who was trying to stay current. Instead of a current recording artist releasing their new project. Look at Beyonce, nobody ever questions her new releases or asks her to only sing Halo from now on. If Mariah has decided to go down the legacy/Christmas route then I wish her well. I do wonder what would've happened if she went along with LA Reid back in 2015 and embraced her legacy, skipped the Stella era, would she be taken even more seriously? Then again we wouldn't have Caution if that was the case.

I wouldn't reference Google. Look at the definition in the DSM-5 instead. This isn't particularly typical bi polar presentation. A manic episode wouldn't just appear while she was on stage, it would've been present for at least 24/48 hours prior. If Mariah is receiving medical/therapeutic intervention then her condition is being poorly managed. It is a real shame that she doesn't appear to have any real friends or someone acting in her best interest.

My heart goes out to anyone suffering from mental orders or addiction. I don't think anyone here is trying to be heartless or cruel. Everyone wants MC to win. But knowing my struggles, I am bipolar, and I have had a lot of drinking issues in the past, Andrew would confirm but he's not here anymore. I know in order to do my job, I have to put in the work. I have to take my meds, exercise, pray, write, see my therapist and psychiatrist and do their homework assignments. I have a job where I can't have manic episodes because I would get fired and MC knows what needs to be done she just is clouded right now and has syncophants around her. I'm just glad this wasn't televised because I wasn't even checking for it. A Beyonce fan gleefully sent it to me at 9AM. I agree Edward. The ones that are still upholding everything MC does and saying slay queen, are another layer of embarrassment on top of the layers of embarrassment from the eternally 12 yo who needs her own lighting (remember on Ally McBeal when it was just a joke?) on top of layers of embarrassment from live televised performances. Oh wait we're lambs. Maybe it's just wool.

I donno, she was elated and excited for this award for months and years. She was over excited, and improving. Mariah told us at the beginning of her speech she was ignoring her prompts. She decided for an off the cuff approach. It reminds me of when she accepted the Ally GLADD Award; she just did her. The GLADD award speech was delivered and received by the community she was talking to so positively. I think she was attempting the same approach here, but staggered. I think she was in her mode of not taking her so seriously and poking fun at herself.

MC pointing out how few women are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame should be the talking point, IMO.

Randy, you are not negative. The speech was horrible. *Closed my ears* Sad moment for true lambs. It was one of her most anticipated speeches as a songwriter, and it turned into self mockery.

Mariah is a professional, groomed from the start of her career for public appearances. What played out on that stage was tragic.

Re: Songwriters speech (100,490) (100,491) by Edward from USA
Because it's easier to justify. My brother is bipolar, he stopped having manic episodes when he was diagnosed and started taking his meds. His meds have been changed a few times, but nobody in my family is forcing meds into his mouth or have him on 24/7 watch, he knows he has to be responsible and take them.

For those who are screaming some of us lack compassion, why don't you scream at Mariah to put the bottle down, and put the arsenal of resources she has at her disposal to work and take responsiblity by not mixing meds with substances. It's not like she doesn't know. There are many celebrities with mental illness, but they do what they have to do to avoid this type of situation.

I have compassion for people with mental illness, especially those who don't have it easy with the resources. People in Mariah's circumstances make me mad because they know better than that.

Now I know that every time Mariah acts weird and out of place, the bipolar card is the new excuse, typical lamb mentality, no wonder why they think we're all nuts. I wonder if the bipolar card covers horrible outfits too.

"But she was almost a parody of herself. Absolutely heart breaking." Yes I thought the same. It was not easy to watch. I really wish Mariah would heal from whatever it causes the "problems". She has all the money and time to take care of herself. If she feels so bad, why not take some time without that showbiz circus. And then come back healthy and authentic. I hope she feels better soon. "After every storm a rainbow appears."

My dad suffered from bipolar, anxiety and depression his whole life. Trust me when I say I've seen it up close too many times. I myself struggle with anxiety, having severe post pardum depression after each of my three kids. I know mental illness. If anything it makes me sad when I see someone struggle.

Sorry, but Mariah isn't an amateur, she's a professional with enough experience under her skirt to know better. All these justifications sound kind of crazy to me. When you've been waiting for the award most important of your career, you plan things up so everything is perfect. You don't show up to your wedding drunk wearing sneakers, you can do that after. She's given great speeches before for less important awards. She could drink herself into next week after her big moment.

What is a manic episode in bipolar disorder?

In the manic phase of bipolar disorder, it's common to experience feelings of heightened energy, creativity, and euphoria. If you're experiencing a manic episode, you may talk a mile a minute, sleep very little, and be hyperactive. You may also feel like you're all-powerful, invincible, or destined for greatness.

Re: Songwriters speech (100,478) (100,484) by Edward from USA
Exactly my sentiment. She's talked about being a songwriter first and foremost since times immemorial, yet here she is presented with the most important award of her career and what does she do? She gets into her diva outfit and messes it up. But oh well, let me be delusional and say it was just perfect and we must love it because it's Mariah and that's what fans do.

I hope people understand why she isn't as respected like the other songwriters and less talented divas, it doesn't have anything to do with her music, it has to do with this unlikable character she thinks people love to watch. And not only that, what kind of outfit is that? Was it a boob and fake ass contest. Lord have mercy.

Re: Songwriters speech (100,481) (100,483) by 123 from USA
Are people that hateful to not realize that she was obviously having a manic episode while on stage? This is classic bipolar behavior. Mariah has two modes. When she is coherent and taking her meds and they are working, we get speeches like the Billboard one. When her bipolar disorder kicks in, we get the speech she gave at the SWHOF. Please educate yourselves and google manic episode in google for bipolar disorder. Do you all think that this is something that just went away when she was diagnosed in 2001? Are we really judging someone's behavior due to their mental health disorder? So rich coming from "fans" who claim to be educated and faultless. Do better, be better. Stop trolling and judging for thumbs up on a fan board. It's childish and shows some of you are "eternally 12" mentally. Mariah's bipolar. A real medical condition. What is your excuse?

Something was off last night with MC. Maybe too many glasses of champagne before the ceremony. She seemed like she had to put on the diva persona when she is in a element she can't control the lighting and how she will be perceived by the audience of her peers. MC's bioplar diagnosis causes her to act this way. It is clear that her dysfunctional family has scarred her real personality severely. She hasn't healed from the hurt that she had endured by her family all of these years.

We didn't know in the early 1990s how hurt MC was inside. It was hard to watch her speech to the end. I almost felt like the laughs at the end of her speech were like the audience was mocking her last comments. We might not ever get another "real" album or tour again. I kind of wished MC was as strong and direct as Monique.

Incoherent. Missed the mark. Undermined her purpose for being there. It's embarrassing that at her age she is unable to get it together for these events. Aside from her speech, her outfit and hair were awful too. I don't know who is styling her lately, but that outfit was something befitting a real housewives reunion and not a seasoned diva. And to be clear, that isn't a good thing.
