Agree about Heavenly. It's so nauseating to listen to the back half of it. I love the first two verses and choruses but it then follows into a sonic car crash.
It's the same with HATEU. It's such a brilliant moving song. But the part when she sings "But there's nothing I can do, boy I can't wait to hate you" right before the whistle note on the bridge is clearly cut and paste and so bad that I always imagine that Mariah has accidentally swallowed the champagne cork whilst singing and her vocal engineer is performing the Heimlich manoeuvre on her.

Oh Australia, you shall not advance fair. Rainbow above Daydream? Charmbracelet above Music Box? Thou art a villain. Everyone knows this is the correct order:
1. Merry Christmas 2. The Rarities 3. Daydream 4. Butterfly 5. Music Box 6. E=MC2 7. MTV Unplugged 8. The Emancipation of Mimi 9. Emotions 10. Glitter 11. Rainbow 12. Mariah Carey 13. Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel 14. Me. I Am Mariah. 15. Caution 16. Charmbracelet 17. Merry Christmas 2 You

Unpopular opinion: Charmbracelet ranks high on my list. While some may not love her whisper voice, I think it's beautiful on this album in particular.

Touch My Body part 2 (97,425)
by Libra Lamb from USA
| |
|
|
I was listening to Touch My Body just the other day and I think the reason this song was so popular when it came out is because it was a new sound for Mimi and it's just a fun Summer type song that doesn't take itself too seriously. The lyrics were pure ham and the music video was so funny. We need another lead single just like it for the next album. Stat.

This is hard to do but here it goes: 1. Butterfly 2. Daydream 3. MTV Unplugged (best live vocals ever) 4. Glitter 5. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel 6. Charmbracelet 7. The Emancipation of Mimi 8. E=MC2 9. Musicbox 10. Rainbow 11. Emotions 12. Mariah Carey 13. Caution 14. The Rarities (unreleased "studio" songs) 15. Me. I am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse The two Merry Christmas albums are in my top 5 otherwise. We love everybody.

My ranking of Mariah's albums (97,421)
by BFF from United States
| |
|
|
I've been thinking this over for a while before posting but here it goes. Studio albums only and leaving out the two holiday records.
1. Butterfly (1997) 2. Emotions (1991) 3. Daydream (1995) 4. Me I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse (2014) 5. Music Box (1993) 6. Rainbow (1999) 7. The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) 8. Glitter (2001) 9. Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel (2009) 10. Mariah Carey (1990) 11. Caution (2018) 12. Charmbracelet (2002) 13. E=MC2 (2008)
I find "The Emancipation of Mimi" quite overrated and pretty hit-or-miss outside of the singles. I agree with Mariah's assessment of her debut that it's too overproduced. I love "Vision of Love" and "Vanishing" but that's about it. "Emotions" is 1000x better than her debut; that was one solid follow-up record.
I think "Music Box" and "Rainbow" are under-appreciated albums in her catalogue; they deserve better receptions for songs like "Anytime You Need A Friend" and "Can't Take That Away", which are among Mariah's best. "Me I Am Mariah" showcases Mariah doing everything she does well, and I think it would have been much more successful if she had not been divorcing Nick during the rollout. "#Beautiful" is one of her most unique lead singles, and duetting with Miguel was a savvy move.
I find "E=MC2" and "Charmbracelet" almost unlistenable. "Charmbracelet" would have been better if she hadn't recorded it in her whisper voice. "Caution" was a snooze fest for the most part and felt very rushed.
"Butterfly" is her magnum opus., practically flawless from start to finish.

The song where that copy/paste/stitching really makes my ears hurt to listen to is "Heavenly". I know a lot of people love this song but I just can't with all of the adlibs at the end. It sounds like each syllable was recorded separately.
Sadly, the last chorus on the non-extended late night version of WBT reminded me of that song
I so like the arrangement though and some of the extended parts.

Signs of the end (97,417)
by Mirage_Nunez from America

At this point, I believe every lamb (new or vintage) has already come to terms with MC's vocal situation. Whether it's flawed, prerecorded, half sung in great voice/half lipped upper register etc. We all know what's going on and have a right to feel how we chose to feel about it. There's no right or wrong way to feel about it going forward as far as I'm concerned.
Having said that, I'm personally not mad or bothered by Mariah doing a studio album/or songs with pieced together great vocals, because I just love her as an artist, the sound of her voice, and her contribution to music. I understand the argument "if you can't duplicate it live (anymore) then why even bother" and I actually agree with that for the most part, but at the end of the day it's still show business and when there's a market or demand for you the show must go on whether it's all your raw unfiltered talent being displayed or a complete smoke and mirror magic show. You have to do your best with what you got (left). For the most part the people just want to be entertained, and see you do what you do/what expected of your brand whether you're a Whitney, a Britney, or somewhere in the middle.
I want Mariah to continue to make great music as long as it's in her to do it and if she wants to piece together a nice live home session every now and again, then have at it. I personally can appreciate it, but everyone don't have to like it and that's totally fine as well.

That would make sense but I do think I remember during the Rainbow era that After Tonight was about Luis and how she was nervous to have that moment with him after having her heart broken before. Even a possible duet was recorded but it didn’t mesh too well with their voices and singing styles. If memory serves me correctly.

I like your write-up. But you know what I've always wanted? If production requires many attempts in a studio with the best phrases cut and paste, I couldn't care less anymore. However, when she does do these high pitched WBT climaxes, and long sustained notes and so on, why is it that the camera is never in the studio filming these come out of her mouth? And there's only ever one other person in there with her, the vocal engineer. Funny that.

"I feel like Caution and especially Rarities have been very good closing chapters of my life long fandom starting in 1994."
I get what you're saying, actually, and I hadn't considered it that way before. It does feel like a nice, round ending. The career came full circle, almost. And if the voice is gone, why bother carrying on? It's a perfectly valid viewpoint.
I believe if Mariah doesn't do something very drastic with a new release it will be the end of her recording career anyway. I'm envisioning a Cher "Believe" album type shift. Other than that, I agree the Rarities is a good Chapter End.

"Her brilliance comes in short bursts, great moments that are stitched together to create a patchy whole."
How funny, I actually wrote a poem a few days ago for my friend who is going through some addiction and depressions issues (yes, okay, I write poetry and normally only when someone asks me to these days) and it was - genuinely - about making the best of bursts of brilliance:
All The Available Light
I remember when strikes the thunderbolt that it's stormier still in the night and,
though flashes of brilliance are fleeting, to paint all the available light.
It is not how dim-lit the universe nor how woeful the world in your sight,
if the canvass requires your bravery then your conscience requires the fight.
AG. 14/02/21
So I agree with you. If the positive is only momentary, you have to seize those moments and make them work.

Oh and In the Mix is totes about her and DJ.
Jk. But it's such an underrated bop. It would be even better without the crowd of kids, but it's still a jam. Cute throwback moment or the theme song to a 90s sitcom starring Mimi that never happened. It deserves better than the opening credits of mixed-ish.

Mariah has always been more of a studio perfectionist. She hasn't had the stamina and consistency to pull off an entire setlist live probably since the first 5 years of her career. After that, everything has been either assisted or straight up cheated. If she was still actually selling much and charting high in the 2010s, I highly doubt she would have done a residency and toured around the world. Notice how more frequent she did concerts and tours as her voice deteriorated? It's because she has found a way to get away with miming through more and more of her material and still get paid top dollar. Quite the contrast from younger Mariah who pretty much avoided long live sets when she was in her vocal prime.
To answer your question, Mariah can still reach the high notes in the studio. Her brilliance comes in short bursts, great moments that are stitched together to create a patchy whole. She always works best in a controlled environment. That's whay it's just her and her sound engineer when she lays down vocals, because she wouldn't mine doing countless takes on just one specific part until she likes it, even if that means she's never gonna be able to replicate even half of them live, especially today. Perhaps that's why many gravitate towards Caution, because it's the first album where she didn't push herself too much to create moments that attempt to approximate her past vocal glories (looking at you, MIAM). People associate Mariah with high notes and unbelievable vocal acrobatics, and she's pressured to aspire towards meeting those expectations because that's her brand. To be fair, these songs aren't just difficult for Mariah - they are very challenging to even the best of singers. People are more likely to mess up (and hence avoid) singing My All than Saving All My Love For You or Because You Loved Me because of Mariah's approach to songwriting.
