Re: Raindream? (97,359) (97,362) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Haha so "she done already done had herses" is line RuPaul picked up from a fast food restaurant employee. The story goes that after a night out at a club RuPaul went to a fast food restaurant and someone was about to pick up a bag that didn't belong to them. That's when the employee behind the counter said "she done already done had herses" basically meaning "she had already gotten her bag, this isn't hers".

Also I didn't start watching the UK version yet but they once had a Mariah episode in the US version. Where they were told to kind of be like those televangelists recruiting people to join their beliefs and one team chose Mariah, the other chose Britney and I was shocked at how little they knew about Mariah. It was a disaster. The only other time they mention her to my knowledge is during the US all stars season in one episode and I didn't watch that yet.

Re: Charmbracelet era (97,357) (97,361) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Yes, I went to the concert too and was blown away by her vocals. Way better than on the Charmbracelet album. I still think of the "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" version as one of her best stage presence ever. It was magic. The whole concert was fire. Mariah was shining.

Re: Taped performances during quarantine (97,351) (97,360) by Billy from Greece
I've noticed it too. The thing is, her acapellas during 2020, or whenever you hear her voice stripped, do not have that quality and it sounds just beautiful. I guess it's a choice in how the whole performance is ultimately mixed, maybe to fit whatever "radio-friendly" standards are out there now, I don't know. In other words, it does not sound to me like it's another phase in her vocal evolution, but who knows. I just adore the essence of her voice and whenever you get to hear it at its most natural it's still captivating. By the way, the new arrangement of "We Belong Together" is just perfection, truly wonderful.

Raindream? (97,359) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
What the hell was that about? I tuned in to see Mariah Carey perform. What was with that outfit? Those shoes? That dark hair? That makeup? What the hell is going on? Who did this? Whoever did it deserves a Nobel Peace Prize because I'm down from defcon 4 and my Doctor has a thankyou note ready because the big vein in my head is no longer about to pop.

If this is the new image then I am loving it: makeup that is subtle and sophisticated, the amazing hair colour that suits her skin tones, an amazing style that compliments the shape of her face and bone structure, an outfit that hides the girls and says "hey, if you want magic my mouth is up here" and shoes that scream she already done had herses (watching Ru Paul's Drag Race UK - but no idea what it means, either). Mariah looks amazing. It's as if she were ten years younger (so like two, I guess). Think back to her performing in that shocking pink top with that clown make up and perm. This Mariah looks like that Mariah's daughter.

And the song? I'm disappointed that it's lipped. But the voice was Rainbow-cum-Daydream (I'm calling this era's voice Raindream) and I appreciated it. Mariah should consider serving resonating chest notes and dropping the high octave-jump screeching in future songs and even in performance of old songs. I don't think anybody needs a lot of that anymore.

This was cool. Sehr cool, Frau Carey.

On the subject of Ru Paul's Drag Race Mariah should definitely go on this. She should direct Mariah Carey's "Gutter" The Ru-sical with the Queens lip-syncing their own lyrics to Mariah Carey songs. She could really help them do that. She's had enough practice.

Re: Taped performances during quarantine (97,351) (97,358) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
That fidgety squeakiness/sharpness in her voice seems to be yet another part of its evolution as she ages that she appears to have had since 2018 (if not earlier) and is particularly noticeable on the climax and final chorus of Portrait. It sounds like her trying to belt but not truly committing to it because she fears that her voice, or at least her control of it, may fail her. Whenever she does it, it sounds very tentative and more piercing than pleasant, but it is what it is.

That "live" updated version of WBT is nice, though. It's faithful to the original, but different enough to warrant repeated listens. Sort of reminds me of the times when her remixes actually incorporated noticeable changes in the track, instead of the cut-and-paste no-mixes we've been getting since 2014. Plus, she's looking great.

I saw her on that tour and I was so impressed with her vocals because I did not like how she sounded on that album. The live renditions of the CB songs were so much better than the recordings.

Re: Cool On You (97,334) (97,355) by Stacey from USA
The only good thing about One Night are the vocals. Listening to them takes me back to that fabulous perfection of an era known as Daydream. ON sounds like two different songs put together. It's either a ballad or an uptempo song, not both. That's why it doesn't work for me and often gets skipped. Slipping Away is just absolute perfection.

Yup. Agreed. That whole era was perfection. Maybe that's why along with the music that I love Daydream so much.

Charmbracelet era (97,353) by Jamie from UK
I love Mariah's voice live during the Charmbraclet tour. It was so crisp and clear and fluid. Her voice had gone through trauma prior to this but I wonder how she managed to gain it back then. Even though I love her performances now her voice doesn't always have the fluidity and depth it once did. I just wonder what made the Charmbracelet era so different that she was able to gain back great live vocals after going through the trauma of 2001. She does a great job now I just sometimes feel she's lost the warm/soul in her voice that she had early on in her career.

Mimi's late night Valentine's Day mix (97,352) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Mariah is truly in a league of her own, I was blown away from the beginning to the end. Mariah has been giving us some great treats during quarantine, and this was no different. Bravo to you Mariah this late night Valentine's Day mix was amazing thank you for continuing to share your amazing talent and extraordinary gifts with the world.

Taped performances during quarantine (97,351) by Leo from LAMBville
This is in no way to shade Mariah or the production of the taped performances. I think she looks super confident and content and I absolutely love them, however has anyone noticed the kind of whine/squeak/sharpness to her voice? I honestly can't tell if she is just using additional textures of her voice or if it was done post production.

Re: Mimi's Late Night Valentine's Mix (97,348) (97,349) by enwar00 from usa
Yes. I loved the instrumentation. It gave WBT more of the vintage soul sound some of the album tracks on Mimi had, which is interesting since it was on that album. Even just seeing her with a band and instruments supporting her, for me that feels more organic and enjoyable in a different way. I somewhat got Unplugged vibes too. But very intimate. I do like the darker hair, makeup, clothes. Nice job Mariah.

Mimi's Late Night Valentine's Mix (97,348) by Terna from Nigeria
I've never clicked so fast and boy was I blown away, oh Mariah. When that chorus hit, I hit thumbs up so quick. Loving that dark hair color, I hope she sticks to it. She looks good too. Someone's been hitting that treadmill.

Re: What other music are people into right now? (97,346) (97,347) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Since the last two years I'm totally into soul music and retro soul like Leon Bridges, Ben l'Oncle Soul and Jazz. (That's why I would love a Jazz album from Mariah "Lullaby of Birdland" is so good and still a favourite from The Rarities.) I also love electronic funk from the 80ies. And sometimes French chanson and blues it really depends on the mood.

Re: What other music are people into right now? (97,338) (97,346) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm feeling uptempo, I'd go for the awesome retro disco - funk - 80's fusion revival we had last year:

Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure?
Kylie Minogue - Disco
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

But 2020 also forced me to tap into mellower sounds:

Ariana Grande - Positions
Victoria Monét - Jaguar
Chloe x Halle - Ungodly Hour

Along with both new and older material from Kali Uchis, Summer Walker, Snoh Aalegra, SZA, Yuna, Raveena, Jhené Aiko, Mahalia, etc.

Re: Angels Advocate / Up Out My Face for #MC30? (97,342) (97,345) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I think she's putting a hold on Memoirs era for this week. Usually we have updated videos by Monday and list of EPs, track lists and cover arts released by Wednesday every week before the EPs are finally released on Friday. We got none of that this week. She's probably focusing on the Valentine's performance this week and maybe will resume next week.

Re: Angels Advocate / Up Out My Face for #MC30? (97,343) (97,344) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I think we can be pretty certain that it won't be released because she really isn't releasing any previously unreleased material. At max we will probably get the Obsessed, UOOMF and Angels Cry remixes (feat. Gucci Mane, Nicki and Ne-Yo respectively) because those were the only ones released. I won't even acknowledge the BGK and IAW remixes on MIAM. Those 2 are the most uninspired remixes and horrible cut and paste jobs. R Kelly's verse doesn't even make sense in the song with contradictory story lines. (Side note: if R Kelly wasn't such a sleaze I would have loved to have the TMB R Kelly unofficial free style on streaming because that's really good but oh well he's a disaster.) I don't know why she chose those 2 out of all options, maybe it fit better with the dark, gloomy and betrayal themes of MIAM but ya completely lack lustre. I do really enjoy the H.A.T.E.U. So so def remix and the Ribbon remix that was leaked and it would have been great to have those but I don't think we'll get it. As for Skydiving I think Liron pretty much said Mariah doesn't have it. Also she was on a different label during MOAIA so that creates another layer of barriers. I will be surprised if she does make those available though.

Angels Advocate / Up Out My Face for #MC30? (97,342) by The Real Deal from USA
Tomorrow, we should be getting the Memoirs Of An imperfect Angel remixes for MC30. I pose two questions: 1) Do you think that she will release the Angels Advocate remix album tomorrow since they are all MOAIA album cuts? 2) Do you think she will release the Nicki Minaj duet single version for Up Out Of My Face? Or will it be an "I don't know her" moment?

Re: What other music are people into right now? (97,338) (97,341) by Warren from Trinidad & Tobago
So I'm from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and right now was supposed to be carnival time, but Covid cancelled it all. No parties, no street parade for 2 days of booze, fun, music and well.

Our local music is soca and this is the quintessential soca song. For those of you that do watch the video, it's from 2003 but Nicky Minaj (who's from here) came back and filmed Pound The Alarm video so her video has some of the same elements.

Re: Favorite Mariah album? (97,318) (97,340) by Leo from LAMBville
"Butterfly" will always be my absolute favorite as a cohesive piece of work from Mariah. I thoroughly enjoy the sequencing of the majority of her projects. All of Mariah's albums have specific moments in my life that I associate with its release; which I think has cemented my connection to her work.

My recent Spotify plays have been "Butterfly", "MOAIA", "MTV Unplugged", "The Rarities" and "Mariah Carey" (debut).

I have Jazmine Sullivan's Heaux Tales and Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia (yes, still) on heavy rotation. Other than that, I am mostly listening to a bunch of different artist singles. Notable mentions:
Zoe Wees
Ashnikko
DaBaby
Maluma
Doja
Natalia Lafourcade
Chole x Halle

What other music are people into right now? (97,338) by Todd from Sydney, Australia
Always curious to hear what other music MC fans are into at the moment. I've recently and accidentally developed quite a fondness for country music after hearing "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton. This has thoroughly confused my Spotify, and after finding all sorts of new "yee-hawww" songs I like, my "made for you" auto playlists are now completely [censored] up.
