Can you imagine the amount of new music coming? (94,049)
by Susana from USA
| |
|

I sure hope it is mounds and mounds of new music. I think this will be the biggest break that she's had and maybe since she became famous. I would hope she puts out a new album this year. I would think with so much time on her hands maybe record a jazz album after that and keep it on hold until the right time.
Her memoirs have got to be getting some really good attention too. She does have Kristoffer with her, so maybe she can do a little photo shoot since that can easily be done via 6ft. away.

Yes I've heard it, he did a good job, but the vocals are from the original song filtered to isolate vocals, and there's a huge loss in Mariah's voice. That's why I'm looking for the vocal only track, if it still exists somewhere.

The Firecracker sample definitely suits the melody better. I like the interpolation of Candy, but it just didn't feel "solid" enough for the melody to settle into, and so the resulting track does sound a little "empty" and it's the harmonies that save it most of the time. If you listen to the entire self-titled debut album by Yellow Magic Orchestra (a great album whose myriad of sounds were ahead of its time), that Firecracker is a part of, that synth riff is likely what you'll remember most out of the entire thing. Can't blame Mariah and her great ear for sampling for being drawn to that.

Yes I noticed it too. Lullaby is a personal Mariah song. That she mentions "the roof on that rainy night" and "still melt away" makes it interesting. I love "Lullaby' as a song but I also always wonder who the man is she is singing about? Derek Jeter or a boyfriend from earlier days?

Haha it's definitely "gotta have another taste". My most stupid misheard lyric was when I heard Miss You Most (at Christmas Time). I only had the cassette single of AIWFCIY so didn't have the lyrics. In the bridge, where she sings of the seasons, I thought "with the April rain" was "with the egg parade", which I took to be some US reference to Easter lol.

I listened to Lullaby again this morning and there's another line I didn't pick up before, "I still melt away", that might also reference the epic Daydream cut. Also interesting take that she may be referencing someone pre-Tommy. You do read things from time to time about her being forced to break up with a boyfriend when she signed her deal, and also the rumour her and Ben Margulies were romantically involved at the time. Whoever this man is, if he was real and not just a songwriter's muse, they were still in touch for years afterwards.

Okay here's a stupid topic, feel free to shoot it down, but does anyone know of any lyrics in Mariah songs that don't match the album book lyrics or just any lyrics they don't understand in general?
I always thought the first chorus in My All sounds like she sings "just one more night with him", rather than "you".
Also never been certain of an ad lib in Honey "gotta have another taste". Is that right? Think the subtitles on the Around The World Tour day she sings "love thy saints" or something. I don't think so.

Hey I have been obsessed on listening Loverboy as if it was meant to sound and trying to recreate it. Does anyone know if the studio outtakes are somewhere to be found? Lots of her "studio acapellas" can be found on YouTube but not Loverboy.

I may be the sole fan in this but I have never cared who what song may be about. When people argue over whether a certain song was about Luis or about Tommy, for example, I cringe. Why care? I want Mariah to write songs that are universal, that everyone can identify with, and thus, be popular. She used to write confident, universal lyrics (now arguably a lot less mature). Underneath The Stars may just be about something she did, but it is a pretty generic story about childhood adventure using non-specific detail. "Dreamlover come rescue me" is about as generic pop as it gets. To try to associate that with something in reality is quite bizarre. And if actually it was about her not being happy with Tommy - I don't wanna know about it. Who would? Why attach horrible memories to good songs? I like Mariah's music and I like her voice. Some people get really way too involved in her and her life.

She probably did, but only she can say when. But writing from experience doesn't mean each or any song is factual to her life. She has often said her songs are hyperbolic, and written to be as universal as possible and she also has multiple co writers who bring their own vibe and experience to each song.

You beat me to it.
I was just thinking yesterday that I needed to make a post about Mariah and her love history. My thought is different though. I was listening to Lullaby also yesterday (I listen to this song everyday though, it's possibly my number 1) and was just thinking about all the songs she has about this certain person. I then thought about the WBT video. Here's my hunch: I think she was in a real love with someone before she met Tommy. He promised her everything that she ever wanted. The lifestyle, family, career, fame, all of it. She chose it all over her actual love.
When her marriage started to show it's true colors, she got nostalgic (Crybaby anyone?). I feel like this is all completely unresolved. This is why she keeps coming back to this theme on all her albums. Maybe the guy got jealous of her spending time with Tommy getting her debut together and he ended it or gave her an ultimatum, who knows?
I feel like this played out in Glitter a bit too. This would also make sense as to why she has only "been with" a handful of men. Idk if she would even dare bring any of this up into her memoir, and maybe the guy has since passed away (Candy Bling) but I would love to know about who she was with pre-Tommy.

"I can't tell you how many times I have played the YouTube videos. Praise the Lord for the bootleggers of old."
Please post links to the "bootleg" videos of the London show of the Daydream tour. I would certainly love to see them as I am sure would others here.
"And also, the concert was filmed. There were tripods set up at the front with cameras on them and photographers present."
There are certainly cameras for the video screens in the arenas to show what's happening on stage for the people in the cheap seats (or as we can now call them, the not-daylight-robbery-of-the-poor-by-the-rich seats).
"Every concert by big artists is filmed and recorded for posterity."
Please provide your sources for this.
"But you can try Andrew, but you can't take that away from me."
I am not trying to, William. I'm trying to tell you to keep it to yourself now.

Haven't seen this in a while. You know, just Mariah on a chaise lounge. She's at her interview best when talking about her creative process, despite how "over it" she looks and sounds, it's the one topic she can discuss quite well.

Did Mariah have an affair? (94,029)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
There seems to be a discrepancy between Mariah's divorce from Tommy (1998), their separation (1997), and her liaisons with gentleman callers at the time. So the question is, 1) do I really wanna trust this feeling 2) do I wanna let it pass me by. Oops, tangent, sorry. The question is, did Mariah have an affair whilst she was still married to Tommy?
The song Lullaby is quite revealing when it speaks about "that night on the roof" and kissing "under the sky". A reference to The Roof clearly, and possibly Fourth of July/Underneath the Stars. And those songs were likely written and recorded in 1996 in order to have found their way onto a 1997 album. Pre-separation as far as the public are aware. I do often feel Mariah's songs have deeper, more personal meanings that she may let on. She's a songwriter, and most will write from experience. The whole Daydream album eludes to either a past love that no longer exists, or longing to be loved. Mariah said she felt like her life at that time was as if she was in a daydream.
Even as far back as Music Box. Dreamlover, come and rescue me. From what? A marriage you felt obliged to head into? Just to hold you once again. Who? He wasn't a lover, nor a friend. She would give her all to have him there. The same all she would give years later on the Butterfly album? Was she the perfect figurine trapped in the music box that was allowed out every so often to sing a pretty tune, or was it just "a cool title" as she said.
Bring on the memoirs.

Loverboy (94,028)

I actually love "Loverboy" but I can't get over how slutty and trashy Mariah wanted to be. I became a fan during "Butterfly", so this was her third album after. When I see "Loverboy" now, I can't help but laugh, it's so trashy.

I hope MC releases the entire concert series for Daydream's anniversary one of these days. But you can try Andrew, but you can't take that away from me (inaudible mumbling and humming in the background).

That is not the best vocal she ever gave and the concert was never filmed. That you enjoyed it is good. But it was one hour of singing 25 years ago. You need to go to some more shows, dear, so you have something else to talk about.
