You could be the biggest and most respected name, but if what you're putting out doesn't guarantee revenue, it would be stupid to invest your coins in said product. Would you invest a million dollars in a Mariah video other than anything related to AIWFCIY? I doubt you would. It's business. Madonna can't sell two records, but she's strong on concerts still. She makes more from a tour that what she would if she had a very successful album. Mariah is strong on Christmas, it is what it is.

Ok, can someone please explain why the Grammys had it out for Mariah?? I know the mess that happened in 2006, as it was revealed from an insider that she was actually supposed to win Album of the Year (hence why WBT started playing when U2 was announced), but a couple head honchos on the Grammy board or something made the decision not to give it to her, but why the hate in 96?

Jagged Little Pill was a phenomenal album, and deserved to win over Daydream in my view. Sorry, y'all know Mariah means everything to me, and Daydream is a superb album, but you can't take away from Alanis her well deserved achievement.

"There were so many amazing albums and songs up against each other that year." And "Daydream" was the biggest of them all by a wide Margin. You don't think it was personal. How about the fact 10 years later on that same Grammy show none of her awards and acceptance speeches were televised on the main show. Coincidence?

If it was Whitney? (101,039)

I think everyone agrees that a legend with the status of Mariah Carey should be getting label investment on her projects, and not just the Christmas projects. Let me ask this, if the roles were reversed and it was Whitney Houston the one still alive, would she be treated like the music royalty that she is? Would she be respected by her label, given a proper push, money for videos, playlists and songs on radio? Would she be getting everything Mariah is not?

A bit too much negativity (101,038)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|

I think there has been a bit too much negativity on this board lately, and I'm the first one to admit I have been a part of it by bashing Mariah's idea to trademark the Queen of Christmas title. But hey, you guys, we are her fans, lets give Mariah some positivity.
I think it's a wonderful thing to learn that she will be the next guest on Meghan Markle's talk show, even though the show has gotten negative reviews. I hope to hear a smart and confident Mariah speaking, maybe about topics she hasn't spoken about before.
I would hate for Mariah to retire, and I can't believe some people here are actually praising the idea, that is exactly what women in music has to face from haters, let us not be haters, ok?
I would love to hear new music from our beloved Mariah, even though her voice is not what it used to. Have you guys forgotten the BET performance, I think she sounded better than years, even having some upper chest notes in the high register. Her voice has gotten a bit thin, but I still love to watch and hear her sing.
So from one fan to my idol, please Mariah, give us some new music.

Nick is an effing joke of a man. He's being deliberately having these kids only thinking about himself. He's also being the worst role model for all of them. I'm glad Mariah removed herself from this mess. These are some of the ridiculous names he's given some of these kids: "Powerful Queen" and "Legendary Love". Lord have mercy.

I'm really sick of the victim aspect of the 1996 Grammys. It was not personal. There were so many amazing albums and songs up against each other that year including Daydream. They acknowledged her as having the biggest selling song of that year by having her open the show. To twist the narrative into something personal or vindictive is just silly.

I would be okay with a retirement announcement. (After one more studio album lol.) I think first a Rarities 2 this year. New album next year. Final Christmas push in 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of Merry Christmas. And then retirement.

And let me guess what the 30 minutes will be: 20 minutes them talking about both being biracial, 5 minutes talking about Mariah's good side, lighting and her ensemble choice, 4 minutes talking about the topic "people don't know this but I write all my songs unless I'm doing a cover or something", and 1 minute talking about MC's future projects. I'm so excited I can hardly wait.

That Girl - Mariah (101,028)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

Lauryn Hill once said the music industry and the machine that it is, made something she used to love turn into something she now loathes and hates - speaking on the creative freedom artists enjoy before the fame monster and industry rules stifles them. I always thought Mariah has gone through this as well, and the "Daydream" era was that turning point for her. Stumbling upon this, words are lacked. I was really young when that Grammy event happened, but now being grown up I fully understand what the intent was. This kind of experience changes someone permanently, negatively. And without a doubt in my mind, it changed her. Especially for someone who has struggled with biracial issues, insecure feelings and not ever fitting in, how do you pick yourself up and keep moving?. You can imagine the industry trying to make you a laughing stock at the Zenith of your career. Smh. They really do build you up to tear you down don't they?. By the time I became a Mariah fan, I could sense she already had this wall built up and persona like you could tell was a defense mechanism, always on "guard" so to speak (especially when being interviewed), and not being herself. So very different from the Mariah one sees in the "This is Mariah" Proctor's theatre DVD. In hind sight bowing out of the Pop music scene (yeah I consider "Daydream" a Pop record) was the best thing she ever did for herself and her career.

The Butterfly Lounge (101,026)
by Edward from USA

What ever happened to the "Butterfly Lounge Project"? It seems as if it was abandoned or something. It's been 4 years since we had any proper music, and it was only a 10-track album. She hasn't toured or had any shows since the pandemic so she should've put something out already. I can't believe all we'll get is the same Christmas stuff plus maybe some hyped up mediocre song with a video of Marian touching herself in the snow. We need at least "The Rarities 2" ASAP.

Yes, the entire Rainbow album is recorded and mastered incredibly poorly. I don't think the poor sound quality is to do with the duet itself being scrapped, more just a terrible transfer from the master tape. It really needs to be remastered, unless the problem stems from the recording itself. The facility she used in Capri was primitive compared to the US Sony studios she recorded in beforehand. Also, perhaps the rush to get the album out and Mariah off the label contributed to a "it's good enough" approach. Either way it's shocking how terrible the album sounds. After Tonight is the worst track but there are others with flaws all the way through. Sometimes I curse my hi-fi set up and listen to the album on Spotify where you can't notice any of the problems.

That's the official story confirmed by Marian. They couldn't use After Tonight for the series for legal reasons. Luis didn't like the final product and because the album was being recorded in such a short period of time, Marian went with solo version.

I agree Bill that the song may have been After Tonight. David Foster produced that one and Diane Warren helped co-write it. I would have loved to be a fly in the wall to see Luis Miguel confronted David Foster about the auto tune and flat out cancel the duet. I also think they when that idea fizzled out it was the same song Mariah asked Toni to duet on Rainbow and Toni ending up having to turn her down as it was during her label issues with Arista.
