I agree with this. Everyone should go back and relisten. This came so quickly after the debut, and they moved on so quickly to the promo for MTV Unplugged, that it sort of got lost in the shuffle. It's full of great songs and the vocals are out of this world.

If Mariah was to cover a song for her next album what song would you guys pick? I'd go for either "Speechless" or "You're Not Alone" both by Michael Jackson.

Justice for "Emotions" (97,496)

After "Butterfly," I would argue that "Emotions" is her second best album. And it's definitely her best album vocally. I particularly love everything she worked on with David Cole and C+C Music Factory and wonder how much more great work she could have produced with David Cole had he not tragically died during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1990s. The ballads and the uptempo songs on this album are all on point. From "Can't Let Go" to "You're So Cold", the writing and production on "Emotions" eclipsed her debut on multiple fronts.

I try and explain pagers and other dated tech to my kids (12, 9, 7) and they look at me with this "huh" look on their face. It's too funny.

I had the black Sony Walkman too. I was so proud to own my first Walkman. Haha. And the cassette which was played endlessly was "Daydream". I still have the original cassette.

Sony Walkman? Man you are old. What's even sadder is I know what it is because I had one too. P.S. Music Box was my first MC CD I ever bought at the ripe old age of 16. I remember having the TV on and Hero started playing. That voice, that feeling I had upon my first listen I'll never forget. I love her big, booming ballads too.

To me, "Daydream" felt too carefully crafted for commercial success and not enough of an artistic statement. I don't get the sense that Mariah enjoyed herself while recording that album as much as she did recording "Butterfly". I like the album but just do not think it's as good as "Butterfly". And as much as I love Mariah, I'm okay with Seal winning Record of the Year for "Kiss From a Rose". Alanis' "Jagged Little Pill" over "Daydream" I'm not sure so sure about.
I disagree with many of Mariah's takes on her own work (i.e. disowning songs like "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Love Takes Time" but not "Obsessed" or "Touch My Body"), but I agree with her assessment that "Butterfly" is her best. The ballads are great - "Close My Eyes", "Butterfly", "Whenever You Call". The hip-hop oriented tracks like "The Roof", "Breakdown" and "Honey" worked really well without veering off into the pandering direction she took in the post-"Butterfly" years. And I just love those house versions of "Butterfly" - I would have loved to see the full length "Fly Away" on the album.
I also just have a very personal connection to "Butterfly" in the way that you said you connected to "Music Box". I listened to the CD version of "Butterfly" a ton on my Walkman.

1) Butterfly 2) Music box (diamond treasure) 3) MOAIA (my ears hopelessly love this one) 4) Daydream 5) E=MC2 6) Glitter 7) Rainbow 8) All others change positions according to the space I am in life. 9) Last position would be "The elusive chanteuse". I have tried but can't connect with this album (at all).

Agree completely. That is why I posted my rankings without any explanation or justification. It is completely a matter of preference. I'm sure there is someone out there who likes "[No] I didn't (featuring cringe-y rapper)" and "Crapfinity", but who am I to question what they like and don't like as a fan. Don't try to "fathom" or "comprehend" ones preference. Great music is in the ears of the listener, lols.

Album rankings are a matter of personal opinion just because a fan prefers one album over another that does not make them wrong, or less of a fan. Personally some people on this board need to relax, and let loose because we all have things going on outside of the message board that consumes us. This should be our place to escape the serious things that we deal with, and bring some fun as we discuss the woman who brings us all together as the family that we are. Be blessed, and stay safe Archives family.

I cannot begin to fathom how people think Butterfly a better album than Daydream. I have, in the last decade, read an inordinate amount of messages lambasting the Grammy Awards for not giving Mariah the Record of the Year award for Daydream. Yet, I do not recall ever having read one message about Butterfly in that respect. And I read and write in this bloody thing every day (much to everyone’s delight).
Hmm. Me thinks, again, that many a lamb feels compelled to put Butterfly at the top because that is what Mariah would want. Or do.
It would be interesting for Mariah to do the same chart she did for her songs with her albums.

Here is the list of Mariah's best albums, according to you fans. If an album was listed at No 1, I gave that album 13 points. If it was listed at No 13, it gave it only 1 point.
01. Butterfly (262) 02. Daydream (228) 03. The emancipation of Mimi (199) 04. Mariah Carey (182) 05. Emotions (177) 06. Music box (158) 07. E=MC2 (133) 08. Memoirs of an imperfect angel (119) 08. Caution (119) 10. Glitter (117) 11. Me I am Mariah (105) 12. Rainbow (104) 13. Charmbracelet (101)

Agree Myles, not to mention, what an opener to the live Caution Tour shows ANN was. It was something to see with the into and her haunting whistle note before leading into the pulsing drums amd lights behind the curtain with ANN. I loved it! Saw the Caution Tour twice luckily, once in AC and then her closing show in Bethlehem, PA and I think ANN was a fitting opening for the shows. Maybe not a Billboard #1 but certainly a hot track.

Tj, I was the same age as you when MB came out. I have the same carefree feelings. Oh how I wish things were as simple as those days. I remember almost singing Hero or Without You in my HS Chorus class concert and then getting bronchitis the weeek of the show. It was devastating. Then my rival got to do a solo of Save The Best For Last by Vanessa Williams in my place.

I agree Shezz. After reading The Art Of Letting Go was penned with Pat in mind, Languishing could be about her too, or perhaps she was already having some issues with Nick and it was a cry out to him, as she has gone on record saying that MIAM was a continuation to Memiors. Mariah is such a deep complex person that just when we think we know where her head could be at, she throws us.

I just noticed that Butterfly is consistent to be in the Top 2 or No.4 of the lamb's personal rankings. Mostly, it's No.1 and 2. It is followed by Daydream I guess. Just saying this observation. See how obsessed I can be with lists or rankings.

"A No No" is one of my favorites as well. I think that it should have been the lead single instead of GTFO or With You. If I did a ranking of my top 20 favorite MC songs, "A No No" would definitely be on that list!
