The 5 chosen Tommy producers (110,865)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
I just found a Barry Mann Brown Eyed Woman 45 record today. The song is very souful like Can You Hear Me? Finding his record made me think about the five chosen producers for MC's first two albums. Tommy chose Rhett Lawrence, Narada Michael Walden, Ric Wake, Barry Mann, and Carole King. Why didn't he choose David Foster to collaborate with MC? I wonder what a Mariah Carey and David Foster collaboration would have sounded like in 1990-1992.

Is it just me, or do people write more messages here in 2025, than the years before? It's sometimes difficult to follow the treads of options.

I have noticed that too. It's like we all knew 2025 would be the start of a new era. Bill, Dove, Lighty from China and Libra Lamb are back. We welcomed this year Giovanni, Lambi, and Baby from Dreamville. T is posting more this year. Randy came out of hibernation. Stacey makes me laugh. Terna and Shezz are great analysts. Mimi is our Tamron Hall with her great insight and commentary. Zachariah is my best friend now. Edward looks for my Saturday post to refute my claims. Lol. I don't want the number #1 slot at the end of the year. I want another board member to be #1. We are all family in the land of Mariah Carey.

I believe MC could do it with Debbie Allen (choreography), L.A.Reid (setlist), JD (guest list), DJ Mustard (remixes and samples), Daniel Moore (musical direction), and Brett Ratner (director) partnering with MC to deliver a spectacular half-time show. I guess we will know on a smaller scale at the MTV Video Awards what MC can do vocally and performance wise. The world will be watching and on social media during and after her performance.

Ya no Superbowl for Mariah. Her perfect opportunity would have been during TEOM era when she was feeling herself and on fire. But now she wouldn't have the stage presence to command such a huge stage. She definitely has the set list to perform but I don't think it's a pressure she wants or needs right now.

Super Bowl (110,858)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Top of the Pops had a long period where artists lip synced purely I believe for technical reasons. There was then a period when TOTP insisted everybody perform live. I assume the studio was moved to one that could better accommodate that. It was during the peak of Euro Pop so it was hilarious seeing the club singers trying to recreate their songs live, some I remember being terrible. And then it was an "either or" situation, throughout the late 90s, then almost everyone lipped after that point.

I was wondering about that, why basically everyone lip-synced on TOTP. Was it a prerequisite or something? Apparently, when the show started in 1964, the British Musicians' Union had strict rules about live performances on television. To avoid conflicts over performance rights and royalties, the show used pre-recorded backing tracks, and artists mimed along.
But yeah, Mariah did lip-sync during her "prime" years. I remember one of the Open Arms performances was mimed in Europe, probably because of jet lag. That would've been an exception though, not the rule. She worked hard on her voice and took pride in singing concerts fully live until '96, which is why she was so offended when Howard Stern accused her of lip-syncing.

I'm a no on Mariah doing a Super Bowl performance. I just think she's past her prime and I don't know if she could deliver vocally. I think it would be a risk and any mess up would just be more ammo for haters. We're still recovering from that disastrous New Year's Eve performance so the last thing Mariah needs is negative coverage of a bad performance. Let Taylor Swift do it.

Daydream is like that hopeless romantic Christian girl who's all about crushes, horses, going to the river, bon fires, game nights and reading her Bible. She's bubbly, adventurous, pure and plays it safe.
Butterfly is that same girl, but it's Friday night and she just turned 21 so she wants to go to the club. She still believes, still prays, but she's letting loose a little. She's trying to have some edge. However though, it's ultimately the same girl, just a different vibe.

They are different. Butterfly is more artistic, and Daydream is very commercial and in the moment. Art and commerce don't have the same criteria in comparison. They're just different.
Personally I listen to them depending on my mood. If I'm home and contemplating, I listen to Butterfly. If I'm in the park or doing my groceries, I listen to Daydream.

Did you know that Hero wasn't even submitted until '95? That's crazy to me. I think after the savage '96 snub, she really stopped putting any faith in the Grammys. And I agree, Always Be My Baby brought something new to the table and definitely deserved recognition.
It's also wild to me that Mariah didn't submit Music Box for AOTY in '94, especially since it was her best-selling album at the time. But maybe it was because she kept losing in '92 and '93. I still can't fathom how Emotions lost Best Pop Vocal Performance. It's literally the hardest song to sing in history.
She already knew the Grammys lacked integrity pretty early on. And she was younger, so she was probably more sensitive to it. The board seems like they resent commercial success, which is probably why Mariah didn't bother submitting some of her best work. "You keep your awards, I'll keep my millions."

I honestly think that "Butterfly" is superior to "Daydream" as an artistic effort. I wish "Butterfly" had been recognized at the 1998 Grammys in the categories where she was nominated. The songwriting and production are just better than on "Daydream" and she approached the vocals with more restraint. Rich Juzwiak's review of the album for Slant Magazine really encapsulates why "Butterfly" is her best album. The hip-hop elements were incorporated in a very classy manner and were not overdone like they were for some songs on "Rainbow" and "Glitter."
I think "One Sweet Day" deserved to win something, but Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" was also a really great song from that year. It was a little strange to award Best Pop Album to "Turbulent Indigo" by Joni Mitchell - I have that album and it is not one of Joni Mitchell's best. She lost best female pop vocal performance to Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's", which is kind of silly too. "Fantasy" is definitely a better record than that one. She lost best female R&B vocal performance to Anita Baker and Album of the Year to Alanis Morissette. There was a lot of competition for Mariah from all directions, but I do agree she should have won something considering she was nominated for so many and considering how successful the album was.
Maybe she would have won some awards at the 1996 Grammys if "Daydream" had been released a little earlier in 1995? "One Sweet Day" and "Always Be My Baby" did not really catch on as hits until 1996, so they may not have had enough exposure by the time of the award ceremony.

Agree. Had this been '96 Tokyo Dome Emotions Mariah, it would've been perfect. She could be a guest star though, like that short number moment with Latto in BET. But Mariah being lazy for a 15 minute set, in front of all of America, on the most watched live TV event, on the biggest gig a star could possibly get, is a no no.
